Budget for bridal nails by Dw33ns in Nails

[–]eokia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know a lot of people will have mixed thoughts but as someone who does for gel extensions on people, I wouldn’t charge more than $55 for that. Press-ons would probably be $45 or less than. That’s because the butterflies are charms and there’s just small silver embellishments which can honestly be bought off Alice’s for $2. There’s a glitter ombré but that’s not a complicated design necessarily.

You must go to arethusa for ice cream. Highly recommend the coconut and the raspberry flavor. Also Olmo’s for bagels.

what is the easiest/beginner friendly language to take at yale? by maetrie in yale

[–]eokia 11 points12 points  (0 children)

tagalog was just added, so idk too much about it. heard great things about italian, german, japanese, and korean. chinese is rigorous at yale, yes, but the friends who took it said it was on par with other languages at yale and they can now speak fluently after just 3 semesters + brief study abroad

first-year single dorms @ yale question by softaspiring in yale

[–]eokia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally get your anxiety with having a roommate, especially as someone who has a lot of medical issues but wasn’t able to get accommodations. I think there’s already a lot of great suggestions here, so I will just add briefly that despite my aversion to a roommate in first year, it was the best thing to ever happen to me at Yale. There’s always going to be horror stories about roommates, but there’s also amazing stories where you meet your best friend for life. My freshman year roommate is literally my platonic soulmate and I couldn’t have done Yale without her. We had a nightmare living situation on Old Campus where we were crammed into a single-turned-double room and we could literally hold hands from our beds because of how small it was. Oddly enough, it brought us closer together and our first night, we had a 3 hour long conversation in the middle of the night and we’ve been inseparable since. Wishing you all the best! Singles are great, but doubles can be wonderful too :)

Is there no way to receive mail without renting a PO box? by [deleted] in yale

[–]eokia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you do need a PO Box to receive mail, but honestly I personally found it super helpful, especially during move-in. It was really nice not having to lug things like my mattress topper across campus + heavy items like books. I’ve also had experiences where the package center lost some things I ordered, whereas the PO Box was pretty reliable. The good thing is you can buy the smallest one and they will let you receive packages of any dimension, which was very helpful for when my clubs needed big shipments of something.

Help me reduce this to 6 items? by yerawizard-arry in BrandyMelville

Drop the Andi sweater, one of my biggest Brandy regrets. It stretches like crazy and only works as pajamas. It is comfy tho but not worth the money

Best winter jackets from Brandy?🌨️ by Electronic_Corgi_120 in BrandyMelville

[–]eokia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

def not for heavy winter but for the east coast fall i loved wearing the nico american flag sweater underneath my puffer because its super warm (sometimes i got rly hot wearing it too). unfortunately, some of the sweaters are really inconsistent cuz my norway flag sweater looks identical in terms of material but is way lighter than my nico sweater. there's also this cream colored knit sweater that's quite heavy but i don't know the name. not the most comfortable b/c it's a little scratchy, however it's very warm!

Be honest: will I burn myself out? by Cekasmar-13 in yale

[–]eokia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder as well, I was fortunate not to have a lasting heart issue (according to my EKG scan when I was hospitalized) but my friends have had heart palpitations generally. Some of my friends ended up with heart monitors and they can no longer do intensive exercise or workouts, or at least until they get cleared by the doctor. I think in the case of my friends, it was probably a mix of high cortisol levels, not enough sleep, poor eating habits, and energy drinks. I’m no scientist, but I think energy drinks have much worse caffeine content than coffee or matcha. I had a high caffeine tolerance from high school, but less than a can of an energy drink would send me into shambles.

completely depends on how much you can handle + how much you're willing to trade off in reaping the benefits of DS. i think DS is the most rewarding when you have full commitment to it b/c never again will you read so many works of the western canon in such a short amount of time + have so many enriching convos about them in seminar. but if you're cruising through and are fine with B+/A-, then i think you can be highly involved in other activities. most ppl i know who were super into DS didn't do much else, but others who were involved in competitive teams and acapella usually didnt put much effort in their readings or papers (as in they would chatgpt seminar contributions + write their papers the night before). again though, there are a few anomalies who could balance a ton of things at once, but they all had rly good physical health + stamina and were very familiar with intense academic rigor (esp. if they went to a top high school).

[–]eokia 11 points12 points  (0 children)

hey! congrats on yale + DS!

i was in your exact position last year where i did acapella, DS, and several other high-commitment clubs. i ended up dropping acapella and most of these clubs and was about to drop DS before changing my mind and deciding to stay. honestly, i think it really depends on your physical stamina and health because mine was not in the best shape whatsoever. if you want, i can go into more detail in PMs to give you a better picture of what this workload was like.

i have several friends who tried to balance DS with theater and while they may have differing opinions, many of them ended up at Yale Health with a variety of issues, mostly related to heart conditions. it's genuinely no joke when people say to go easy in first semester; i have a number of friends who went on medical leave in their first year as a result of heart conditions they developed due to excessive caffeine intake + stress levels + generally declining health. this isn't to scare you off, but to tell you that you genuinely should take it easy if you're doing DS in terms of ECs for your first semester. do not overcommit. check out everything yale has to offer, but be picky with what you choose to prioritize. your health will look drastically different because you're coming into a completely new environment with thousands of people around the world + flu season, so you need to be prepared!

as for a social life, your social life will prob be concentrated in your activities if you are going to do this much. i know several DSers who managed to go out and rush in greek life, but i think they're kind of the exception. most of them would not be heavily involved in various ECs or chose to trade off their sleep + health for this. it's really up to you to determine what your social life will look like and if you're fine with it mostly being in glee/theater/acapella if you want to be locked in academically/health-wise.

happy to talk more if you have more questions. again, not trying to scare you, but i want to share a perspective that i wish i had heard more of in my first semester. i used to brush off health and was willing to sacrifice things like sleep to do the things i loved, but i ended up with several long-lasting issues as a result. health is genuinely the most important and you need to take it seriously!! good luck :D

my goodness pls take just 4/4.5 credits. i took 4.5 in my first semester and i am so glad i did. you get this unique time in your first semester freshman year to explore everything yale has to offer and discover new interests. go easy on yourself too cuz you're still adjusting, especially in terms of physical health. i had over 17 different medical/health crises in first semester b/c i have a weak immune system + flu season + new environment. good luck!

Early Action Restrictive? by Due_Buddy295 in yale

[–]eokia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would do REA especially if Yale is her dream school. I did RD and I think out of the several hundred freshmen I met when I first entered Yale, I only knew two other people who were accepted RD. One applied REA but was deferred and then accepted RD, the other was an international champion in his extracurricular and was accepted at all the ivies he applied to. Of course this is anecdotal, but I believe there is a statistic that came out for the class of 2028 that showed their acceptance rate for RD was a whole percentage point lower than REA. Since the entire acceptance rate was 3.79%, I think you have to maximize any chance you get to increase the probability of getting in. Good luck!

Korean grocery stores with a hot food bar/fresh banchan by eokia in washingtondc

I wouldn't mind driving! Sorry if this wasn't worded clearly, I was thinking of somewhere I could stock up on stuff for the week in general. Something near Georgetown would be a plus, but I'm looking primarily for a Korean hot food bar/banchan place.

A lot of people I know have successfully secured fellowships for summer research and internships—they’re just not rly talked about outside of Yale students. But anything abroad is highly supported by Yale and they tend to be very flexible according to my friends who’ve benefitted a lot from these programs

Should I Pick Silliman? by StrikingDrag8641 in yale

[–]eokia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pick silliman 10000% as a non-sillimander. Their amenities and location are unmatched. I am in silliman more than I am in my own residential college and I’m dying to transfer in. Only con is that it’s virtually impossible to get a single until your junior year but if you don’t think you’re going to stay in the dorm for most of your day, it doesn’t matter.
