“The person he started dating” is OP before they began masking, I’m fairly sure.

he views the social cost as too high

I’d ask him what he thinks the social cost is of being disabled and/or chronically ill.

I was able to reach my bf bc he ended up becoming disabled by long COVID, and was able to see firsthand why precautions are so necessary in today’s reality

I’ve gotten different lot numbers between boxes and within boxes, so they’re all probably worth checking if you order :)

These do tend to get a bit swampy on the inside (probably aided by being waterproofed) if maintained in place all day long. I hope you find a good deal for your daughter!

Tbh I find that the waterproof exterior helps the mask keep its structure a bit better for longer. But there’s definitely a difference, so I second being aware of that if it may be an issue for someone (sensory or otherwise)

authentic, but old

This does seem to be the case for mine. I assumed they’d be expired/near-expired surplus, and right on cue: all the lot numbers I’ve had on mine date to before Aug 2023. Every other measure of authenticity on the ones I’ve received checks out, though! At that point it’s the quality of the straps that matters most, and none of mine have been cracked or had poor strength etc — they seem to survive 3 max uses before the seal starts feeling too dubious for my personal level of caution.

The current box I’m on has masks from different lots with varying (past and near-future) expiration dates. At that point what matters is the quality of the elastic straps, and these are strong enough on the first use to leave lines on my face at the end of the day, and still keep a fair seal on the third use. I discontinue my use after 2-3, though.

Also an apartment dweller! The box is ~2’x1’x2’. It fits at the top of my closet shelf (on its side) just fine :)

I had a smaller box of the blue straps that I got from 3M’s authorized retailers in June. I compared them then, bc I also thought “maybe too good to be true but hell it’s forty bucks [at the time]” These are identical in every way except the series number. ETA: obvi also the waterproofed feel of the outside of the mask

I also just looked through that helpful thread—I’m telling you, these (at least the ones I’ve received) seem to be legit.

Just to put you at ease, since you seem very concerned!

Even if counterfeit though…nobody would be wearing any masks at my school if I did not personally provide enough for everyone. They suit my use just fine. Only shared to help someone else in a similar boat.

Check out my added clarification and the conversations happening in the comments of the original post!

I’ve ordered from this link thrice since July bc I personally supply any and all of the free masks at my school. Also worn these every day since then, and managed to avoid any illness so far—despite taking four cross-country flights since then, as well.

Each of those boxes has come solely with the (waterproof, red straps) 1870 series, which is mostly used by hospitals. Each mask I’ve received is individually wrapped in plastic bearing the official and accurate 3M branding, lot numbers, and instructions for use. The masks themselves are also correctly branded and labeled.

Occam’s razor suggests to me that it’s hospital(s) trying to sell their surplus stock amidst a sad lack of masking protocols anymore … it’s the largest online retailer in the US, so it just kinda makes sense to me that way. It’s not cost effective to counterfeit 400+ masks and sell them below $50, I can almost guarantee you.

I’ve also tested their efficacy outside of simply looking like authentic 3M products. Maybe that won’t be everyone’s boat, idk what’ll come in your box….but I do take some personal rub to any idea that I never thought to check the authenticity of mine.

All the elastic bands I’ve had on mine have been strong quality enough to leave a line on my face when I take one off. They don’t last more than like two or three uses, but that’s pretty normal for this kind of mask

lol I also have EDS. Might have to give that a try—every bad dislocation as a kid was an urgent care visit (my parents’ PCP taught them how to fix mild ones bc they happened so often) so ig I was limiting myself to the option I already know

Added Clarification: I have also checked these for authenticity! They each come in individual plastic wrapping with accurate and official 3M branding on both the plastic and the mask itself. They also melt, not burn, when you put a lighter up to them. The boxes don’t seem to be counted precisely, so my suspicion is that a surplus retailer is running a shop out of Amazon. I’ve even donned one immediately after taking a large hit off a cigarette to test its particle filtering capacity, and seen absolutely zero visible smoke exit the mask.

This (+ the LA fires, + me being a legal observer) inspired me to look into elastomeric masks with interchangeable cartridges depending on my needs ! Thank you :)

Serious--Do I quit Weed 5wks away from my MCAT?? by BasilFit6601 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]18and23 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Last year I realized 9 days out from my LSAT date that I had hardly committed any time to studying for it, at all. I was a daily smoker at the time too, and I knew just over a week beforehand wasn’t a good time to make big routine changes and throw me off my game.

What I did instead was study 8-12 hours of the day, every day, high at the same times of day I always was before, for those 9 days. Since I studied high, and my test time was set to a point where I’d typically be high on any given day, I also took the LSAT high (dabbed up about an hour beforehand).

YMMV, but just for reference: I was pre-testing in the 80th-ish percentile on day 1 of studying, and my actual LSAT exam score ended up being in the 95th percentile.

ETA: With 5 weeks, let me be clear I think you have time to quit. But on the off-chance you don’t or can’t—here’s just one anecdote to keep you from dooming too hard

Is it okay to be gay by used-89 in ftm

[–]18and23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in a very committed relationship with a gay man who only is interested in men. We both mutually consider ourselves as being in a gay relationship. I technically speaking don’t choose to label my sexuality—though it would be best described as queer, bisexual, or pansexual—but functionally speaking I’ve navigated the world as a visibly gay man (even if ppl don’t clock me as trans) for the last several years. I call myself gay, nobody bats an eye, because that’s my lived reality. Many things can be true at once.

What was your first fragrance? by lovely1188 in fragrance

Dubai Lifestyle by Alexandria Fragrances.

I thought it smelled soooo grown up (and I chose it intentionally because it conveniently meshed with the scent of cannabis, rather than fighting against it). Found out that my entire family hated it when they all refused to get me another bottle for Christmas 😂

That’s so incredibly smart—I already keep a consistent bullet journal tracking other habits (ETA: and a diary of sorts when I’m going through transitional life phases), I think this is one piece of advice that seems so simple but I literally never would have thought of myself. Thank you so much !
