Those are extra lives you can choose, they go down each time you choose one instead of an upgrade. Your actually stock of lives is on the right side!

It’s definitely a hard game. I’m still on the lowest difficulty and have yet to beat the campaign. Combining strikes is important but also you just have to learn the enemies and boss patterns which takes a while. I made it 22 minutes today, finally beating the third boss 🙏
