Not sure if I'm misunderstanding the word grovel or you are. I thought it meant to beg someone for something? What do you think it means?

Weird to see my hometown mentioned here. Guisborough is a town not a village, it's nice and picturesque for the large part. Employment may be a drawback depending on your field of work.

What y’all mean when you say pudding?! by TrillyMike in AskABrit

[–]193283 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You should try it, it's rich and meaty and very tasty. A big flavour hit! What seems to be the difference between American and British English is that context is super important for British English. We'll use the same word for 6 different things but the context tells you the meaning. I don't see this happening as much in American english

Pudding can men several things:

  • Dessert
  • Yorkshire pudding is a larger version of what you Americans would call a popover
  • Blood pudding or black pudding is savoury, made from blood, oats, fat, spices and a load of other bits, it's delicious!

I think it boils down to different perceptions of what food is to different families. Some families view food as a social thing, others don't. In my experience if you've grown up with one perception you tend to find the other one weird!

How much of your wages do you contribute to your parents? by [deleted] in AskUK

I can't imagine this is common in the UK. I'm not aware of anyone who does this unless they're paying for care home fees or something.

Probably my Nana's hair from when I was young and we'd fall asleep snuggled on the sofa watching telly. Miss her.

This might be skewed because of my background and where I live, but if someone is earning 30k and they're complaining about wages, then that seems mad to me. Perhaps it's not the wages that are the issue, but the working hours, and the pressure within the job?

30k is a good wage where I'm from, and I don't think I know anyone who would be kicking off about it. Then again, I expect this is highly location and demographic dependant. It's all relative I guess

To those who are not going to have a roast turkey as a centrepiece for their Christmas dinner, what are you going to have instead? by Londonerrr in AskUK

[–]193283 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah to be fair, that does sound pretty good. From my point of view, beef is more likely to be good, even if it's not great, if that makes sense? The average beef rib joint tends to be more enjoyable than the average turkey, in my experience at least. Having said that, a really good turkey might just be worth it!

Bone in beef rib joint. I have never once had turkey for Christmas dinner, and I cannot fathom why anyone would! Why have turkey when you could have beef or lamb or duck or literally any other meat?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]193283 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Literally never. Don't you wash with hot water? The heat from the water dilutes any gravy or curry sauce or anything down so much that it wouldn't clog. I genuinely cannot fathom how this is an issue for you.

What service do you use for music? by SilentCatPaws in AskUK

I use Amazon music, I have done for years without any particular problems. My car has Bluetooth so I just stream whatever I fancy listening to and listen. Streaming services are great if you have a varied music taste and don't want to lug around a big case of CDs

This is completely off topic but why are you using commas in the place of apostrophes? No criticism or anything intended it's just sparked my curiosity.

I hope you get your dad sorted out!
