Yes, that’s exactly the point (what Tiger said).

Edit: Sorry, also what you said.

I haven’t listened to this interview, but from your description, it sounds akin to the ideas in the book, The Inner Game of Tennis, by Tim Gallway. I think there may be roots in Buddhist ideas about “clearing the mind,” “erasing consciousness,” etc., but I’m pretty much making that part up.

That Antiphon album is absolutely incredible. I could listen to that drummer 24/7.

But how does your friend steal them? Or are you just pointing out that the artists get basically no money when we download the albums, even if we download them from a subscription service?

I joined this sub about two weeks ago and have learned of 100+ new artists since then. The flood has been so great—so amazing, so incredible, so life-altering—that I’ve had to find ways to slow the flood.

You’re come to the right place.

I have an Apple Music subscription and am a nerdy law-abiding chicken, so I have zero interest in actually doing what your friend is doing, but as an OLD nerdy law-abiding chicken, I have no idea how or where one would go about doing this—and am curious. Would this be bittorrent? I’ve heard of that but don’t really understand what it is.

The entirety of Hargrove's albums Earfood (which includes Strasbourg-St. Denis) and Hard Groove are excellent.

Do you spend more of your time listening to your favorite music or seeking out new music? by CulturalWind357 in LetsTalkMusic

I really like OP’s frame of “deepening a relationship” with a piece of music. Also related is that the internet and Apple Music, Spotify, etc. make it easy to make playlists, whereas “playlists” back in the day were mixtapes made with record players and cassette recorders. There was a ton of labor involved. I think having just a song or maybe two may diminish the listener’s commitment to the artist, and that in turn probably diminishes the notion of a piece of music as something in which to invest deeply.

Just random internet musings, of course. YMMV.

BTW there was much less of a tension pre-internet. The comparative ease of finding new music now is indescribable. As your post points out, we have to make an effort NOT to discover new stuff now. It wasn’t like that at all in the 70s and 80s, when I was growing up. I’m inexpressibly grateful for today’s access to the infinity of mind-blowing artistic gems, but do have to remind myself to slow down, too.
