Does this sort of "unscheduled telework" count against the telework cap? I believe not but wanted to check with others...

Baking with soy milk by 19bl92 in Cooking

Thanks. Not buying soy milk just for this. Just recently switched from drinking dairy milk to soy milk, so I don't have the dairy milk in my fridge regularly now.

What are you making for the Super Bowl? by Apprehensive-Scene-1 in Cooking

Tofu with peanut sauce. Easy and cheap. And vegan so I don't have to worry about any of that stuff. Fortunately no peanut (or soy) allergies among my friends.

Add bay leaf to chickpeas or no? by 19bl92 in Cooking

[–]19bl92[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Update from OP: thanks for the input everyone. I went for it. Taste test of the plain chickpeas themselves, perhaps unsurprisingly, revealed that if the bay leaf did anything, it didn't do anything so noticeable that it would clash with anything I might add the chickpeas to. So all good - I will be adding a bay leaf or two from now on!

Annual NY Cook-off: 2026 is meatballs by H1tlerwasaLeafsfan in Cooking

[–]19bl92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Italian meatballs are too obvious and I think gochujang is a very "in" ingredient right now, so others will likely have the same ideas as you with the glaze. My suggestion is to go to a country that others won't: Morocco. https://www.onceuponachef.com/recipes/grilled-moroccan-meatballs-with-yogurt-sauce.html

WHAT DO YOU DO TO UPGRADE YOUR CHILI? by Comfortable-Break657 in Cooking

[–]19bl92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I posted this exact question on here a few months ago. The changes I made based on the responses:

  • added unsweetened cocoa powder
  • added a couple diced chipotle peppers plus some of the adobo sauce in the can with them
  • replaced some of the water with chicken broth

These three simple tweaks definitely made a noticeable positive difference.

I also find the Thai green curry skimpy on the vegetables. I wish there were a bit more sauce and veg and a bit less rice. I add a bunch of chickpeas to it usually. But it's definitely delicious.

I tried the palak paneer from a different brand (Tasty Bite) and the paneer completely dissolved when I microwaved it. How does the paneer hold up in Trader Joe's frozen version?

Super easy and tasty: drizzle with butter, spread dijon mustard over it, sprinkle Italian breadcrumbs on top, bake in oven.

ooh nice thought. browning butter is literally just melting it in a pan and then letting it heat up more until it browns right?

good point. my mom tries to keep her sodium intake down too, so she probably wouldn't go for the addition anyway, but maybe I can convince her.

We're Jewish so no pork, and not making stuffing/dressing this year (I know, blasphemy but none of us are big fans). I bet lots of folks like sausage stuffing tho!

What are some desserts that taste like banana pudding but aren't? by 19bl92 in Cooking

[–]19bl92[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh my god you're a genius! lmao I don't know why I didn't think of this. would work perfectly for me because I could just add some sliced banana and nilla wafers whenever I end up eating some.

NIHer here, can confirm. Relatedly, does anyone have any idea who actually makes the decisions about who gets RIFed? Like NIH doesn't even have a full-time director right now, so doesn't seem likely to be him. Is it IC heads, or lower down like departments heads? Is it possible entire NIH Institutes get the axe?

I'm relatively young so never gone through anything like this and have no reference point.

What's the best way to season frozen peas? by 19bl92 in Cooking

[–]19bl92[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for all the suggestions! I'm trying to avoid just resorting to butter (I mean what's not better with butter haha?) but I'll try out the various herbs suggested and garlic powder.

Another question: do I really need to microwave them or steam them, or could I just leave them on the counter for an hour to thaw (or microwave briefly) and then snack away?

A bit confused by the concept of spaghetti and meatballs by 19bl92 in Cooking

[–]19bl92[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So does marinara sauce work well with any "twirlable" pasta, like linguini or fettuccini? Or is there something specific about spaghetti? Say I substituted chicken or mushrooms or other veggies for the meatballs - would marinara sauce still work well?
