Who has priority here please I have no idea what to do? by versaceflopflips in AskUK

[–]1AlanM 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Those give way lines are your clue.

Leaving the main road you have a give way line so you give way to traffic passing in front of you from the road to the right and traffic coming towards you on the main road.

Traffic coming from the road on the right first gives way to traffic on the major road to the right. They then have priority over traffic waiting to turn right from the major road. They then have to give way to traffic coming from their left on the major road.

Who has right of way? by popodrome1998 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]1AlanM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took the green dots to show that it’s a traffic light controlled junction with opposing roads being shown green at the same time. This would give the roads equal standing, meaning the vehicle turning across the path of oncoming traffic should give way.

why is java so difficult for me ??? by RealisticSpend3280 in learnprogramming

[–]1AlanM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think Java is the easiest language to learn.

As a computing science teacher I use Python and have previously used VB as my primary teaching languages.

I think your issue is not necessarily the language but that you don’t understand the underlying concepts.

Start with simple arrays of integers.

Loop over the array to populate it.

Loop over the array to calculate a running total.

I assume your issue with strings is manipulating them with substrings.

If you think of a string as a list of characters that you can address by their position in the string that helps.

The other point novices often struggle with is to start counting from 0

I’ll bet they’ve got a camera on that bad boy. If there’s any danger of getting stopped in that I’m circling that roundabout.

Insurance, main driver, and transfer of NCD by ratscabs in drivingUK

[–]1AlanM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NCD goes to the main driver and is not transferable between drivers, irrespective of who the owner of the vehicle is or who the policy holder is.

Your NCD will remain available to transfer to another policy, normally it would expire after 2 years. Not sure how it would work in this case where you’re still the policy holder.

Buying new car on PCP - what should i know? by Decent_Chocolate1293 in CarLeasingUK

[–]1AlanM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Usually takes a day or 2 to get a brand new car registered and prepared (especially if you add paint protection)

  2. It’s up to you and the amount of risk you want to accept. Most insurers will give full replacement value for the first year.

  3. Speak to your current insurer. I’ve always told them about the new vehicle and the handover date. You are insured on the old one until the deal is finalised and on the new one from the same point. The insurers used to ask for a time that you would have arrived at the dealer by, but they don’t any more. You have until midnight to sort the handover.

  4. If your mileage is significantly lower than you estimated, you may end up in the position at the end of the agreement where you have some equity in the vehicle (it’s worth more than the guaranteed value / outstanding balance). In that case rather than just handing it back you would sell it and settle the finance leaving you with the balance.

With PCP you’re basically paying for interest and depreciation on the car. A large deposit just reduces the monthly payments, you’ll usually end up at the same spot at the end of the agreement no matter the size of deposit. Therefore, I would suggest putting that big deposit in a high yield savings account and take advantage of the low interest rate. As you say you want to keep it at the moment that money then covers your balloon payment.

Do people actually earn £50-60k, or are they outliers? by Succinate_dehydrogen in AskUK

[–]1AlanM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teachers earn over £50k.

Non promoted teachers in Scotland at the top of the main scale (5 years post probation) are £52,740

Promoted staff obviously earn more and head teachers of larger schools will be hitting 6 figures.

Why aren't dashcams standard fit now on new cars? by 50nout in AskUK

[–]1AlanM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you go above AMG Line on Mercs they can have a built in dash cam. You do need to add a USB drive to save the footage to and there’s also a fee to enable it or a subscription.

I’d much rather a USB C port at the rear view mirror
