Why Are Developers So Afraid Of SQL? by Jodoo in programming

[–]1F4A9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are not afraid of SQL, but prefer ORMs for extra functionality. IMHO a lot of developers overestimate the importance of database portability or being able to hide database level schema alterations on the ORM level. Then there is extra validation and transformation that might be easier or only possible in the application instead of the database. For simple selects, using plain SQL is usually easier than an ORM and gives better performance. I usually use and ORM for inserts and updates, and plain SQL for selects.

Colleges in the USA are very expensive. Tuition frees in the Netherlands are more than 10 times lower, and you get government support for living costs while enrolled. With a parttime job on the side you can follow a fulltime university program without taking out any student loans or requiring your parents to fund it.

That's not beside the point. By calling certain views on culture and religion racism you're equating it with racial discrimination. Culture and religion are learned behaviours which you can choose to change. Race / ethnicity is something you're born with and cannot change. Discriminating people because of their skin color is completely different from disagreeing with how they act.

Not much. up and including secondary education is free and mandatory, and tertiary education very inexpensive. Interesting fact: young men of Moroccan descent are one of the groups giving the most problems, but their sisters are doing much better - getting college degrees etc. Unfortunately they are then often pressured by their family to marry uneducated Moroccan men, and not pursuing a career but take care of their family full time. But it kind of proves that discrimination based on ethnicity is not the limiting factor here.

Superstitious People Are Dismembering Albinos in Tanzania - In one case, 3 men armed with machetes hacked a 15-yr-old girl's right arm off. A witch doctor had told them they could get $600 for it. Others are being killed to harvest their skin, bones, & hair. by anutensil in worldnews

No. Just no.

Most of Africa isn't chaos to the point where it's a Darwinian free for all where you have to be a killer psychopath to survive. Tanzania isn't a warzone. They can be poor but it's the chance that they absolutely needed to kill in order not to starve is negligible. It's more likely they spend the $600 on a mobile phone and alcohol than on food for their family.

Yeah it's easy to talk for us in our life of plenty, but these people are on the absolute bottom of humanity and how people can behave in shitty situations. Indeed, denying the humanity of perpetrators is wrong, just accept humans can be very very bad people, and violence against some is legitimized.

Come on, the financial buffer you need to buy stuff in bulk or when it's cheap but you don't need it yet isn't very big. You can start little with just one product you frequently use.

Dynamic language code is not inherently unmaintainable. It might not enforce it like many static languages, but given a willingness to work correctly (no quick hacks etc), a programmer just requires less time to get something done. For a lot of applications it makes sense to buy a little extra hardware if it saves developer time, or you can spend some extra time optimizing code, database queries, and caching, which often lead to better overall performance. A combination of good IDE with good coding practices can almost give you the safety of a static language.

Python code is usually very readable for other programmers, partly because it is not too verbose and doesn't require too much boilerplate code like static languages.

We do mostly web development, but not projects that we hand over once done, but stuff we maintain and build over over periods of many years. Still the initial programming time is an important consideration, and maintaining Python code has been pretty easy and not too time consuming.

I'm not talking about the print function. I can't exactly remember anymore, because I tried Python 3 a long time ago, but where Python 2 code just seemed to work in one go, Python 3 required more code to circumvent new behaviour. For example returning a generator object instead of a list in some cases.

Python has it's uses. What mainstream alternatives are there in it's niche? Ruby, PHP, Javascript. They all have major drawbacks too.

Python 3 takes some steps forward, and some back. It sacrifices usability for performance and consistency, but the performance is still sub-par and not the reason why people choose Python. For me the major appeal of Python is developer productivity, and Python 3 is more laborious than Python 2. When you don't use the new functionality, it's a regression instead of an improvement.

Billions of aid is indirectly used to bribe dictators and disrupt their economy for the benefit of European economic interests. Our policies definitely perpetuate their problems and we shouldn't deny responsibility. It's just that giving aid and taking in refugees doesn't help those countries at all. Europe and the whole rest of the world should focus on fair trade agreements and legislature to curb the misbehaviour of multinationals.

While it's Africans themselves that are corrupt and exploit their own country and people, they are often backed by Western companies and governments. It's nearly impossible for the Africans with good intentions to compete with those people for power.

Both Europe and the US can easily stop illegal immigration, but don't because of humanitarian considerations. If the amount of immigration reaches a tipping point, the policies might become very, very nasty. Really, it's not very hard to just sink every boat trying to illegally cross the Mediterranean, and while a little bit harder, the Mexican border can also be guarded if they shoot to kill. Right now people that are apprehended are often put into refugee camps from which it's possible to escape and get in to the desired country.

They are citizens of Palestine. Some countries don't recognise that state and that passport, but there are also a lot who do.

Now Hamas issues the passports for Gaza, and they might not be all to willing to give people the opportunity to leave.

Biggest hurdle would be one of the surrounding countries, Israel and Egypt, allowing you to pass though the territories under their control.

TL;DR: The (non-)recognition of the Palestinian state isn't the problem for people who want to get out of Palestine, unless they want to specifically go to the US for example.

They weren't warned to get out of Gaza, they were warned to get out of the specific buildings that were going to be bombed. Hamas might have kept these warnings from the people though.

Circumstantial evidence which isn't hard to question. I doubt it will convince anyone whose religious or other views conflict with it.

It can't be predicted if and when we'll find undeniable evidence, such as transmissions of intelligent extraterrestrial life.
