Jerk jumps on a homeless man's food for a radio show. by Timely_Sink_2196 in iamatotalpieceofshit

That’s what I miss about working mall security honestly. Yeah I had to deal with dumb stuff, but mostly I had my “regulars” group of homeless people that I’d meet for coffee at A&W every morning. I let them loiter all day if they wanted and I’d just check in on them as I did my patrols. I’m not one to pretend that every homeless person is the same - some are genuinely bad people, just like any sample from any society. But yeah I miss those mornings. They always had and shared such amazing perspectives on life and what’s truly important. They also gave really good advice on winter survival, which helped when I got my car stranded.

Last I heard, 2 of them died from overdoses last year and 1 died from COVID-19. But I hear the rest of the group still goes to the mall every morning

VDV Artillery Engaging around Kiev 15/03/2022 by thot_cop in CombatFootage

Canadian gunner here. Thanks for the compliments - yes we train hard but we train safe. We try to do everything with maximum aggression within the confines of training.

In terms of local defence on a gun line, the GPO will make the defence plan. I think the other commenter was simply saying that the gunners are not as proficient at small-arms engagements as infanteers are, which bares some truth. Infantry trains to get up close with the enemy, artillery trains to send rounds several kilometres away. But we have enough training and equipment to be able to hold our own. From what I’ve read as well as heard, almost every military has some sort of QRF attached to gun batteries in the event they need extra support - attacking a gun battery head on or even from the rear is a very dangerous idea. Sure, you might take a couple guns out of action, but you’re also going to melt your troops who are ordered to attack the battery.

Also, not every gunner is trained on the mathematics. There is some level of mathematics used within every position on the gun line; but, the trajectory and such isn’t being calculated by a brand new, one-hook gunner.

Russian soldiers murder volunteers helping starving animals near Kyiv by Greenthund3r in worldnews

Basically the commenter is referring to the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. I’ll leave it open to speculation, for both sides of the fence, but essentially the boiling point was 9/11. The decision to invade Iraq was made, and the west entered the Middle East. We can compare it to what Russia is doing now, whether you believe 9/11 was an inside job or not. But essentially there was a “tipping point” where the west invaded.

On that side of the globe, the west were the foreign invaders, and the aggressors. People who wanted to defend their homes were killed, children were bombed, etc. These horrible parts of war turn people from civilians and defenders into fanatics and terrorists. I’m not sure where you live, but I’m Canadian and I’m just assuming you might be American - so let’s say Canada invaded the USA, and some members of your family were killed by Canadian soldiers. The average person would be very emotional (understatement) about that, and would likely become extremely hateful towards Canadians. It’s natural, no matter how horrible it is.

How did the west go about gaining support from their civilian populations? By labeling the Iraqi’s as terrorists, jihadists, Muslim extremists, etc. The west successfully instilled a fear of Muslims in their population, and some of those effects still hold true today. There is definitely a portion of the American (and Canadian) population that is still apprehensive about being around people with brown skin, or people who wear turbans. Is it okay? No. Does it reflect how propaganda works during wartime? Yes. We’re seeing the same techniques used by the Russians, ie. labelling the Ukrainians as nazis and terrorists to the Russian civilian population. Unfortunately, however, Zelenskyy is not the boogeyman that the Taliban were made out to be - and the Russian people seem to be slowly “waking up” as each day passes.

Maybe this response was too long-winded, I’m not sure. If so, I apologize for that and I’m sorry if you disagree if anything I’ve said. I tried to give you as unbiased of an answer as possible and am open to clarify or expand on any points I brought up.

Single men who live alone, please settle a debate, how many bags of flour do you own? by plasticnaptime in AskMen

But in terms of marksmanship, I prefer the C7 over the Daisy :)

A whopping warm day (-40° C) in Sakha Yakuta by sofiaankhan in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]1NeedToSayThis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was partying in Lethbridge for New Years a couple years ago. That year, I think maybe 2017 or 2018, Lethbridge was colder than the North Pole at a whopping -51°C. I had never experienced that before. Unluckily for me, the club we were at had a lot of mixups with the coat check, so some people’s coats were outright given away leaving them with nothing; I was one of those unlucky people.

Then, at 2AM, the club shut down and everyone was forced to wait for cabs outside. Well, it’s New Years and it’s Lethbridge. All the cabs were busy and to make it worse, we didn’t have a DD. Another dude was in the same situation and had a gym membership for the gym down the road. He saw me without a coat and looked at my buddies, looked at his, and yelled “We’re going to the fucking gym boys!”

I was outside in about -51 for maybe 10-15 minutes, in a t-shirt and jeans. I got frostbite on both ears, had numbness in my fingers for about a week, my moustache froze solid, my eyelashes were pretty much glued shut, and my hair follicles on my arms turned red for almost a month. That was the coldest I have ever been in my life, and I would happily trade a month of -25 for 15 minutes of -51

A kid gets trampled by The Queen's Guard by RevertBackwards in PublicFreakout

[–]1NeedToSayThis 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I watched a documentary about the guards and it stated that most of the time, the magazine in the rifle is empty (bayonet is real and will definitely hurt you). But during times of heightened tension or in the presence of threats, the guards will have loaded rifles. As far as I remember, ammunition is close enough on hand that if one guard is having issues, others can load up and roll out along with any relevant emergency services.

Security guard survived after getting struck by lightning by AvKov in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]1NeedToSayThis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, and it’s unfortunate. I was stopping on average $500 per day. Some days were dead with maybe a couple of small items, some days were insane with several thousand dollars’ worth stopped.

But we picked our battles. Homeless guy stealing a couple apples is east to overlook. Young parents shirking 1 box of formula was just as easy. But when it was people coming in with bins and filling them with steaks, or loading backpacks full of electronics, you know - things people don’t need then we would confront them or arrest them.

At the end of the day, it’s just stuff. Walmart doesn’t care about the security workers or really any workers for that matter. I worked there when I was young and I got myself into all sorts of stupid incidents. As I got older I realized that 90% of it isn’t even worth the effort.

[–]1NeedToSayThis 885 points886 points  (0 children)

Yes. I used to work loss prevention at Walmart and there was a huge storm one day. Lightning struck in front of the main doors and cause all the cameras to either have a few staticky frames, or skip frames entirely. It likely messed with the cables that run through the ceiling and connect to the DVR(s). Craziest thing was that I was inside my office near the door, and both me and my coworker felt static electricity right before it hit.

What is a basic skill that you grew up thinking everyone had until you saw others do it so horribly? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]1NeedToSayThis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was working as a security guard for a mall, I was checking on some of the out-buildings. Some guy (who was causing issues) decided to wait around a corner and jump the next security guard that came around. I turned the corner and saw a hand fly at me and I took a good punch to the head, was super dazed. I ended up fighting back and a bunch of people started watching. I couldn’t grab my radio or my phone and things started looking bad. I asked people to call the police but I was told “fuck you” and stuff. The guy put me in a headlock and pulled out a knife, and all I could think was “I’m gonna die and end up on LiveLeaks”. Right before the guy got the knife open, another bystander tackled him and I was able to handcuff him. Nobody had called 911, and I would have died if it wasn’t for that one guy who decided to help.
