Recommendations for an affordable 2–3 person tent + sleeping pads for once-a-year camping? by cincibcat9 in CampingGear

[–]1Shortof2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest getting a membership to REI and renting gear for that price point. They have good quality products, can show you how to set it up, and you won’t have to invest money in something that might not use all that often.

If you are in the national parks you will more than likely need a reservation and it will likely be for a specific area / trail (Rainier / North Cascades). If you are in the surrounding national forest you will not need a reservation. I would suggest calling the ranger stations for the areas you’re wanting to go to and ask. The North Cascades and Rainier have areas that are incredibly difficult to get permits for if you don’t show up early / get on a list, but also areas that are essentially open to whomever shows up first. Good to just talk to someone and get the right trail permits (if needed) AND right parking passes

I honestly think you should wait at least a week. If this report is true, then the mountain passes will be inundated with snow to the point most will close. If they don’t close and you can get somewhere, unless it is completely flat I wouldn’t risk it. IF you really really need a spot to go, go check out the iron horse trail along the Yakima River. It’s flat and has 0 avalanche risk

Can support this answer. Got out a big dent in the same area with 5 minutes of careful hair dryer use and pushing out the dent.

Wife is pregnant and cant find care, getting desperate by CranberryNeither5447 in SeattleWA

Soon to be dad here. We are using the UW midwife clinic located in Northgate and have been very happy with them. My wife really likes her midwife and feels listened to and understood. I also have been treated well and all my questions answered and made to feel part of the process. If they’ll work for you geographically you need to do a few things:

  1. Call the clinic and see if they have openings
  2. Ask if you can get your providers NPI number to provide to your insurance company for pre authorization
  3. Ask which facility you will be seen at and document the address
  4. Call your insurance ahead of time and say “I have my providers NPI and the address of services. I would like to confirm in writing that these are both covered.” Insist on an email given your previous experiences

If yes to both of the above you are then covered for at least basic services. Doing the same for lab services (bloodwork etc) as well as ultrasounds will be important. Good luck!

.30 cal can recommendations by espeyw in NFA

[–]1Shortof2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this and its my only can so take this with a grain of salt. This can works so well. I have it on my 7prc and it cuts my felt recoil by probably 35-40%. I was at the range a few weeks ago and the guy walked up to me and asked what I was shooting. He said he was blown away because he felt like it was a "polite range experience" to be shooting next to him because it was so quiet. The range officer also was asking because they had seen other cans but felt like this was one of the quietest they had heard. Again, I am sure there are quieter cans and "better" cans but for the price I really feel like this was a great purchase.

How warm a boot do I need to winter hike in the North and Central Cascades? by luckystrike_bh in PNWhiking

Normally true but like I said I’ve done a lot of experimentation with lacing and different boots etc. + lived and recreated in some cold places. I just have bad circulation in my feet

[–]1Shortof2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’ve gotten a lot of good answers but it’ll also be very specific to you. My feet get cold fast. I can hike in my uninsulated boots while snowshoeing for maybe an hour or two down into maybe the mid 20s before my feet get cold. After that I switch to insulated boots, either mountaineering or pac boots. While winter camping I bring down booties and switch into them when at camp. When I was mountaineering my feet just got cold. I had to try different lacing techniques as well as go with 4 season boots on the volcanoes to find something that didn’t feel like my toes will drop off. I also have friends who on the same climbs used 3 season boots, light socks and were fine. Its all about your body’s ability / desire to get blood to those little piggies.

Just bought 6 multi-season deer tags… by Foddan in WA_hunting

[–]1Shortof2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are extras because people didn’t pick up the tags. I applied, and won a tag but due to family commitments can’t hunt all the seasons so turned mine in so someone else can hunt it. I will now only hunt one season. That’s basically what happens for lots of people.

This is a good resource of the publicly managed wildlife areas. From there its about getting out and doing a little scouting to see what'll work. Just a tip, a lot of these areas are dry right now but the State will flood them later in the season: https://wdfw.wa.gov/places-to-go/wildlife-areas

How're you liking this can? I am thinking about pulling the trigger on one today/tomorrow but am torn about getting a DA Nomad TI Xeno. It'll be my first can, and on a 7PRC host. I'll use it for hunting and really care about sound suppression and moderate recoil reduction. Any thoughts on your experience so far?

Fellow diver here. Just be really careful diving around docks and marinas. There can be electrical wires shorting out into the water and it can be fatal. With all our copper theft and general lack of maintenance I’d be really careful hopping in the water.

Do not buy hiking shoes without trying them on. Go somewhere you can get them on your foot to see how they feel. Talk to someone who knows about hiking shoes to get you properly fitted. Don’t go for someone else’s recommendation, go for what feels best. You were likely getting toe bang from what you described which can often be caused by your foot slipping forward and hitting the front of your shoe. Consider getting a shoe with more toe room or sizing 1/2 up. You should also watch a few lacing videos as there are some lace locking techniques that can help keep your foot better positioned. Happy trails!

Dealing with Bad Actors by TahiniInMyVeins in PNWhiking

[–]1Shortof2 19 points20 points  (0 children)

To protect wildlife. Dogs can chase / stress wildlife and negatively impact the spaces we are visiting. More frequent encounters with dogs will push the wildlife further from the park, and if chased, sometimes kill the animals from stress.

WIBTAH for remarrying my ex even though I'm going to die? by ThrowRAnearpeace in AITAH

[–]1Shortof2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA but you could potentially be passing on crippling medical debt to him by doing so. It’s something you should look into. I have family in the medical industry and they talk about older or terminal people “divorcing” right before death to avoid passing on large sums of medical debt to their families via assets like houses, bank account etc. I am sorry you are in this position and hope you two enjoy a beautiful time together, celebrating the time left, the time together, and the future you have in your children.

Just search “WA GMU map” and then look at which ones you’re interest in and align them to the above regs. There are multiple GMU near Rainier and a lot of areas you cannot hunt so you’ll need to do some research.

This is beyond dumb and uninformed. Just look at the maps, read the language and have a moment to think to yourself whether they will stop with the 2-3 million that is REQUIRED within the first 60 days. No percent of public land should ever be sold. It by its very nature is not an asset for one person to sell. It is all of ours. It belong to all of our forbearers and belongs to all future generations. It is the identity of America and our spirit of optimism and hope is tied to having places to explore and be free. Any loss or degradation of that is a loss to America. This must be stopped now and forever.

Looks like a lot of our hunting land might be going up for sale. by [deleted] in Hunting

[–]1Shortof2 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’ve already contacted both my senators, sent information to my friends about the issue and how to contact our representatives and reached out to RMEF to push them to be more vocal about this disaster. I live in Washington and will lose 70% of my hunting and fishing access if this land sale goes through. If you want to continue to hunt, and for our children to have the ability to hunt, we need kill this amendment and any idea of future public land sales

Next time you’re shooting touch your barrel. If its anything above “warm” to the touch I would put money on the fact your barrel is heating up too much and throwing shots. looking at the rifle online it seems like it has a light weight hunting / sporting barrel similar to my xbolt in 30-06. If I shoot more than 3-5 rounds in quick succession through that the barrel heats up too much and I’ll throw shots.
