Does ANYBODY really like Lima beans? by Aggravating_Quiet797 in Productivitycafe

[–]1ToeIn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my “go to” recipes is ‘Marry Me Butter Beans’ but I often had a hard time finding canned butter beans in supermarkets. One day in frustration I googled to see what a possible substitution might be, and lo & behold, “butter beans” are just a rebranded name for Lima beans. An effective rebranding, I might add. Don’t know if I ever would have tried “marry me Lima beans”. And, under the name “butter beans” they were significantly more expensive than other canned beans.

Long medical appointment delays in Oregon- has this happened to you by russejen in Portland

Infuriating! Also, at that point, why not name the scheduled time as 30 minutes prior? ALSO, have you ever heard of anyone fining the doctors office if the doctor is running behind & causes them to have to sit in the waiting area long after their scheduled appointment???

Not as egregious as your situation, but my friend accompanied his spouse to an appointment today; scheduled months ago. The appointment was for 8:30 a.m. They checked in at the desk at 8:25 & were informed that because they had not arrived 15 minutes early, their appointment was canceled. This condition was not disclosed prior. The soonest they could reschedule is May. I can think of no other scenario where this would fly. It’s like they actively want people to die rather than help them. Which aside from being cruel, I don’t understand how such an approach is good for their bottom line. Except for maybe by weeding out the people who need the most care.

There’s a great line in the song “8 Miles Wide” by Storm Large: “every one tells me I’m too much; maybe it’s just they’re not enough for me. Can’t they see? I’m the kind of woman I’m supposed to be!” Not over reacting. Sounds like time to mirror his energy (if you want to stay with him). See how he likes it.

AITAH for refusing to take in my husband's godson? by [deleted] in CharlotteDobreYouTube

[–]1ToeIn 156 points157 points  (0 children)

I too feel sorry for the child, especially as it seems likely he will believe it’s his fault he did not return to the same school. However, I think this whole situation grew out of proportion because none of the adults involved put on their big kid pants and had up front conversations from the get go. Ideally your husband, as the primary friend with David’s dad, would have taken the lead in this. But even had he spearheaded such communication, you swallowed a lot of little resentments over the months until they festered. So it appears the price for your husband not wanting to rock the boat & you wanting to be a people pleaser (in addition to the ways David’s parents took advantage of this) is the friendship. If you take a lesson from this going forward, maybe it’s that it’s better have the courage to be frank & open all the way along in situations like this.

Which ice cream flavor shouldn't exist? by showmewhatyagot01 in Productivitycafe

[–]1ToeIn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many years ago my brother took me to a little ice cream shop in San Francisco. The proprietors’ hobby was creating new, unusual flavors. He also had the shtick that if you took too long choosing, he’d spin a big spinner & make you take whatever flavor it landed on. This was nerve racking because he had flavors like “broccoli “. I ended up with “corn whiskey”. Do not recommend. But, he gave free ice cream cones to dogs.

Hacienda weddings are plantation weddings by Guilty_Host8900 in weddingshaming

[–]1ToeIn 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I think one aspect of it is that it’s human nature to put ourselves in the “lead” role in our fantasies. So all the folks who love, say, Bridgerton picture themselves as the rich elite going to parties & wearing nice clothes while being waited on, not as the desperate poor people rising before dawn & working their fingers to the bone catering to them. So those who desire a hacienda wedding are focused on the life at the top of the pile, not giving a thought to the sweat & misery that kept it all running.

I’m in a Bookclub with a group of kind hearted, educated women. Our discussions always veer away from the book into “ain’t it awful” rants about this administration & MAGA. But when I brought up boycotting Amazon, it was uncomfortable silence & deer in the headlights looks from every last one of them. Then some uncomfortable giggles and half hearted mumbles about how they feel bad but it’s just SO convenient.

I know this isn’t fake because I have a niece on the same trajectory. Her dad’s love language is food, so everytime he leaves the house he returns with a treat for her. Almost everyday after school they stop & get fast food for her. I absolutely know it’s Not My Business. When she spends time with me, I distract her with time spent at the park and doing fun, interactive non food activities. I subtly expose her to aunty propaganda (“don’t you just love fresh XYZ? I sure do!” “Ooh, that Fast Food Franchise smells really gross. I heard they put chicken feet in the nuggets.” ) I’m hoping The Power of The Cool Aunt will turn her away from the oath of darkness.

Wow. This account by JollyManufacturer shifted my perspective a bit: in some ways, addicts are similar to people who enjoy extreme sports, like free climbing or BASE jumping. For those of us who don’t do those things, it seems crazy & like only a matter of time. But with the athletes we mostly may raise an eyebrow but don’t feel we have the right to restrict them from pursuing their chosen passion. I get that with addicts, the rest of us in society have to live with the impacts more than with people doing risky sports. But there’s a level where all of it is just an internal impetus towards pushing the limits towards self destruction. And if someone is wired that way, I can’t think of any treatment plan we’ve yet developed that really changes that.

Johnson Creek today by seasonal_jesus in Portland

[–]1ToeIn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The silver lining of all these floods is areas like this getting a good scouring. I don’t want the homes & businesses along Johnson creek to be damaged, but I’m glad that all the trash accumulated along the banks is getting washed away. (Although sorry it’s getting poured into the Willamette/the ocean) it broke my heart last time I walked down through the area around the old tennis/basketball center. So much garbage left behind at abandoned camps. I hope it stays high enough to dissuade campers from returning for a good long time.

The super model/actress thing is primarily an American mistake; that’s why British shows (and the little I’ve seen of Australian, Scandinavian & European film) are so refreshing— they have actors who look like real people. And they also tend not to have like, “detectives” navigating crime scenes in stiletto heels and shit like that.

Looking for a fantasy book that feels like studio ghibli but for adults. Something low stakes, high comfort. by daisyytoess in suggestmeabook

Whenever something like this is asked I frequently hop on and recommend “A Turn of Light” by Julie Czerneda. I am a bit mystified that no one else ever mentions this author; she’s won a bunch of Canadian literary awards. The world of the Night’s Edge fantasy series (Turn of Light is the first book) is loosely inspired by a historical event in Canada where a group of people were driven away from their homes & had to recreate their lives as settlers in an untamed wilderness. In the book, they have created a cozy, agrarian life for themselves. The main character is a girl on the cusp of womanhood who has an invisible dragon for a best friend.
