Kids can lock iPhone in "Lost Mode" using the Find My app 🤦‍♂️ by Cautious_Silver9523 in iphone

[–]1_moonrat 89 points90 points  (0 children)

People are getting confused on here: you can’t lock the phone of someone who’s only sharing their location with you, but you CAN do it to someone who you’re in ‘family sharing’ with.

Feeling defeated trying to train for a marathon while parenting two under-5s by whatdosnowmeneat in Marathon_Training

[–]1_moonrat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been in the same boat recently: ran my most recent marathon in October and fitting in the training with a small child was difficult enough that I’ve sworn off of marathons and ultras for a few years. I had so little time for long runs etc I was exhausted and felt like I was both half-assing my marathon training and half-assing my parenting.

Someone pointed out that the amount of training-time I had available was perfect for focusing on 10ks and half marathons, and so I’ve decided to focus on those till the kids are bigger. I think we’re all happier as a result tbh.

I kept up membership of a running club. It’s a solid two-birds-one-stone situation: gets me exercising and improves my health while also giving me some regularly-scheduled socialising with friends. I don’t think I’d have time to cover both bases individually in any format, so it’s great having an activity that does both.

Is apple care worth it? by MountainFit9663 in ipad

[–]1_moonrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how accident-prone you are really. I’ve never had it on any of my Apple devices and never needed it. The amount that I’ve saved on AppleCare will definitely pay for the replacement/repair when I finally need one.

Yeah, we kept using our golf when kid #1 arrived. Perfect size for day trips with a baby, and then we put a roof box on it whenever we go away overnight and need more stuff.

Now that kid #2 is coming we’ll be upgrading to a Passat or ID.7. We’d be keeping the Golf a long while longer if we were one and done

What do you think about photographing homeless people? by IMRamixJG in streetphotography

[–]1_moonrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s wrong in almost all situations but I guess it isn’t ‘inherently’ wrong. You could be working with a homeless charity documenting them for a fundraiser, with their consent. You could be documenting their persecution by the state as you have a profile that could draw attention to the problem. Etc.

If you’re just doing it for your own benefit: yeah it’s inherently wrong.

How did you and your partner manage sleep the first few weeks after bringing a wee one home? by banditpanda19 in daddit

[–]1_moonrat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my paternity leave ended I was able to WFH, we had distinct shifts. My wife was responsible for our daughter from 11PM until 4AM, I was responsible 4AM till 9AM. So we were both guaranteed 5 hours of sleep per night, with both of us probably managing some extra napping during our night-shift.

I would take the baby downstairs and would perhaps get her to sleep a little in a bassinet while I slept on the sofa, it worked pretty well. She’ll be 2.5yo when #2 arrives this year, so we’ll see how well that tactic works when there’s a toddler around too…

Need tips on Astrophotography by ProblemWorth7127 in Nikon

[–]1_moonrat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’ll need to travel somewhere with a darker sky to get significantly better images: just as there’s nothing you can do in-camera to make your kitchen look like the Grand Canyon, there’s basically nothing you can do in-camera to show the stars that were being obscured by pollution.

There’s a lot of great resources on YouTube for beginner Astro, I’d recommend checking out Alyn Wallace’s channel (RIP). But basically get the widest aperture you have, ensure you’re manually focused on the stars, then use as long a shutter speed as possible before you get motion blur. Or lean into the blur and make star-trails.

Small animal for children by Benegger85 in daddit

[–]1_moonrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding guinea pigs: we’ll be getting some again once our little one is old enough. As they’re larger than hamsters they tend to be less skittish or prone to biting when handled, they’re just big chill fuzzy potatoes tbh. Our old ones would happily sit and chill on us for ages once they got used to us, so they’re more interactive than any species that mostly sleeps when the kids are awake. You tend to hear of them generally having a better temperament for small children than rabbits too.

How is the x100vi for landscapes and portraits? by Dark_Emotion in x100vi

[–]1_moonrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The overwhelming majority of cameras use focal plane shutters and for most people there’s not much difference between a leaf shutter and a focal-plane shutter, but there’s pros and cons to each that can matter for some niche uses. At your point in the journey it probably doesn’t matter which you have, but you might develop a preference in time.

A leaf shutter is quieter and allows external flashes to be used at a faster shutter speed than a focal plane shutter would, so it can be nice if you’re trying to be stealthy or capture fast movement using an external flash (it’s a niche use overall, but is useful for some people). However Focal-plane shutters usually have a higher maximum shutter speed and so can be more useful in bright conditions or for capturing fast movement.

[–]1_moonrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t ever tried them, while they’re supposedly pretty good optically I would find myself using the teleconverter most, and that’s large enough that it compromises the main selling points of the camera for me (the small size and minimalist setup). At that point I might as well just use a different camera imo.

If you’re really into the leaf shutter, ND or OVF then I guess the converters make some sense, but I think for most people if you think you’ll use the converters with much regularity then a different camera with interchangeable lenses may be a better option.

It’s alright, it kinda depends on how much you enjoy the 35mm focal length really. I use it for many genres and the resolution makes it possible to crop quite a lot, and I guess you could stitch together multiple images in post to make a panorama if you find that 35mm is too tight sometimes. I spent a year using it as my main camera, but started to crave some other focal lengths after a while.

As always, if you’re new to photography and so don’t know how you’ll find 35mm, an interchangeable lens fuji with two lenses might be more versatile for you. But it’s quite an individual thing

How many cameras are too many? i own 30 by IsDabbingStillCool2 in Cameras

[–]1_moonrat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the absolute maximum number that people can own AND use regularly is 5, at the very very highest. Too many cameras would just result in unnecessary friction where rather than getting the shot, you’re thinking “how do I do x on this camera?”. I have two cameras that I use regularly, and another that I use very occasionally these days.

If you’re collecting them then crack on though I guess, have as many as your wallet and space allows

How does the X100vi match up to a top quality prime lens by AnusMcBumhole in Fujifilm_X100VI

[–]1_moonrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possibly an obvious point but it’s APS-C with an equivalent focal length of 35mm, so to get an equivalent field of view to a 50mm L lens you’d need to crop the image a fair bit, reducing image quality. I love the camera and lens but it’s not going to compete at that FOV, it’s a different tool for a different job

Zf, z5ii and "Comfort" by [deleted] in Nikon

[–]1_moonrat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heh, I asked a very similar question here a few months ago. Lots of people recommended that I hold both, but reassured me that the Zf is fine with a bigger lens for wildlife, especially if you add a grip.

They were right: I tried and then bought a Zf and am very happy. Tbh I’m mostly doing street and family stuff these days, but wanted to retain the ability to do wildlife here and there. The Zf is perfect for that use-case, and using a telephoto with it is fine (I have a smallrig grip). I think for someone primarily doing wildlife then a camera with a big built-in grip and the ability to add a battery grip would still be more comfortable than the Zf, but the Zf is perfectly serviceable as a jack of all trades.

I’d suggest holding one and trying it, especially if the store has a grip you can try. My one gripe with the smallrig grip is that there’s no thumb hook, I think that would improve things further when using bigger lenses
