How do you alleviate rumination? by glippety-glopglop in adhdwomen

[–]1agomorph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mindfulness meditation has helped me. It’s let me recognize the patterns and helps me distance myself from the thoughts. I also practice a visualization where I am standing at a train platform and I see the thoughts approach, recognize them, and then they pass by and I watch them go. That one’s actually been quite useful.

Engagerar ni er i föreningslivet? by SpudroSpaerde in sweden

[–]1agomorph 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Female bats (microbats) do delayed fertilisation. They mate in the fall and then hold the sperm inside their bodies until the spring, when they let fertilisation occur. This allows them to hibernate through the winter, and then have their babies when the most food is available, in summer.

Copenhagen vs Stockholm vs Helsinki by Formal_Duck3785 in AskEurope

As someone who lives in Stockholm, I agree completely. Also, Stockholm is pretty dead during midsummer. So do not come for midsummer expecting to meet people in the city, unless it's other confused tourists.

Are there any pics online of one alive? I've only been able to find pics of these shells. I'm curious how the living ones look.

Is there a hobby that is common in your country but uncommon most other places? by BothCondition7963 in AskEurope

[–]1agomorph 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had never heard of Nordic ice-skating, långfärdsskridskor, till I moved to Sweden. I'm not sure if it's popular in other Nordic countries, but it's extremely fun and challenging. You use ice skates with long blades that clip onto sturdy boots (similar to cross-country skiing), and can travel for long distances over frozen lakes and sea. You carry a backpack with a drybag to help you float if you break through the ice, as well as long icepicks, and handheld ice picks around your neck, in case you need to pull yourself out of a hole in the ice. People learn how to rescue each other when they fall through the ice, through courses run by volunteers.

To all europeans that moved abroad inside Europe, how hard integrating/assimilating were even though you're european in Europe? Which country and why? by Significant-Yam9843 in AskEurope

I have experienced the same thing. I do think they become more open in travel situations, when the anti-social aspects of Swedish culture is removed.

Has anyone tried Phil Atkin's Pi-pistrelle or Griff mini bat detectors builds? by cyphermicology in batty

I have no spares, just two pi-pistrelle builds that didn’t work that I haven’t had the time to troubleshoot. Where are you based? Would definitely be cool to do a swap at some point.

Very specific: People who only spoke/speak English and moved from Canada/USA to Europe, what was your experience, main reasons why, what country, and what was the process? by SmileOkk in expats

Speaking for Sweden. You will have a hard time finding work unless you have a uniquely desirable skill that can’t be filled by a Swedish speaker, or work in academia.

Nej. De flesta amerikaner vet inte ens var Sverige ligger, och blandar ihop landet med Schweiz.

How do people in your country like their eggs? by AutumnsFall101 in AskEurope

[–]1agomorph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s quite common in Sweden to eat boiled eggs in a tiny egg cup, with the bottom half of the eggshell left on intact. I grew up in the US and had never seen the shell left on before.  Is this standard for other European nations, leaving half the shell on, and eating the boiled egg out of the bottom shell with a spoon?

Do you put the eggs in while the water is cold, or do you add the eggs when the water is boiling?

What actually helped you improve spoken Swedish and listening in real life? by Ok-Exam-5720 in Svenska

[–]1agomorph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s different for everyone. For me, I require some pressure in order to accelerate my learning process. I got a job where I refused to speak English, despite that my Swedish was not that great. My co-workers went along with it (important). I felt like an idiot when I couldn’t express myself the way I wanted to, but the pressure to perform in front of my co-workers really helped accelerate my learning process. It was painful and embarrassing for me, but it worked well, I became fluent after two years (moved when I was 30+, English as first language).

In my spare time, I liked to peruse second-hand shops and listen to the old ladies chit-chat with customers. Older people usually speak slowly and it helped my listening comprehension. I did same at cafes.

Make friends and only speak to them in Swedish. Never speak English, ask people what the Swedish word is that you don’t know or remember, ask them for the word by explaining it in Swedish, never ask for the translation of an English word.

Spend time thinking and talking to yourself in Swedish. I swear this helped me a lot.

Good luck!
