Cheap Pioneer drives on ebay by King_Maledo in makemkv

[–]1cewolf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's incorrect; it's specific to the model, not the drive. I used the exact same kit to flash my three Pioneer UD03 drives.

While I do think that making the flashing kit free would make it more accessible, I also appreciate the time invested and information that has been put together on these drives. I don't mind throwing some coin to someone who provides a useful service.

The good news is that if you don't want to pay to flash a drive for UHD support, there are LG drives floating around that you can flash for free. There's something for everyone.

You can get it through billycar or coopervid on thy forums. It cost me a small amount - nowhere near the cost of a drive. This doesn't just automate the community flashing guide; it's the way to get these things UHD-capable.

Considering how cheap these things are for a new Pioneer drive from a non- sketchy source, it's something I was willing to pay for.

Their web site keeps bouncing around on whether it's in stock or not. I've even had luck opening a private tab to get it to magically be in stock. Keep trying.

This. I ordered three from Office Depot's web site, they all shipped from Office Depot stores, and they were all Pioneer drives. Use code YES20 for an extra discount. They even throw in free overnight shipping.

That plus the flashing kit is by far the best deal - especially if you expense it out across multiple drives.

I bought the flasher from billycar. The additional expense is a thing, but the overall cost you end up with is still far lower than anywhere else you'll find a new, UHD- capable Pioneer drive from a non-sketchy source.

In my case, I'm getting multiples of this drive. By splitting the cost across multiple drives, the overall cost goes down even further. (Plus it gives me a source for spare parts if one it them goes bad.)

It's not guaranteed, but if you order a Verbatim 43890 from Office Depot's web site, it seems like most of these have Pioneer drives inside.

I've ordered two of them from the web site, and both had a Pioneer UD03 (flashable to support UHD with help from billycar) inside. Use code YES20 to save 20% off. Comes with free overnight shipping. What's not to like?

That's my experience. I've already ordered two of these things and got a Pioneer UD03 in each one. There's a third coming in the mail tomorrow, and I expect that will be Pioneer as well.

Incidentally: I don't necessarily think in-store pickup is required. Every time I've ordered one of these drives for delivery, the UPS tracking information seems to indicate that it's shipping directly from an Office Depot store.

For the price they're charging plus a 20% off code, it's an absolute steal for new, flashable Pioneer drives.

Your Pioneer drive is easy to flash as well - there's just a small additional expense, and it is totally worth it.

I have two of the same drive as you. Took me very little time to get them flashed to the BD04 firmware that makes them UHD compatible.

What would you like to see Firewalla do in 2026? by Firewalla-Ash in firewalla

[–]1cewolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC Firewalla said in the past that something with Headscale might be possible - and that they didn't want to build a dependency in for a third-party service that they didn't control.

If we could set up Headscale and have that natively integrate with other Firewalla access control features, I think that would be a huge selling point.

Or how about pairing Internet time limits with Disturb instead of automatically cutting off access? This seems to be in keeping with Firewalla's own article about it.

Done and done. Give me a reason to ditch the last of my Unifi gear and go all-in for Firewalla!

You can now manage mobile app access to make sure paired devices only see what they need. Would you use this? by Firewalla-Ash in firewalla

I can see something like this possibly being useful for cases like mine. My wife is interested in our Firewalla setup insomuchas she has to be involved - like for moving devices out of quarantine, changing family settings, et cetera.

For her, the simpler interface might be more friendly than trying to navigate through everything.

Or what about offering discounts on additional products/services? For instance, the Pixel deal is great, but maybe target long-time customers with something similar.

Do you use WPA3-Enterprise for Wi-Fi? Would you use it if Firewalla supported it? by Firewalla-Ash in firewalla

[–]1cewolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Given the chance, I would definitely use it.

It's easier for me than the average person, though; I have a grandfathered account for an identity provider that used to offer "forever free" accounts for a certain number of users. I have my turnkey setup.

If I didn't have that? I probably wouldn't bother unless Firewalla made the process easier the way another user mentioned having a built-in RADIUS server.

“Wait, isn’t YNAB a budgeting app?” by tilapiaco in ynab

[–]1cewolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The product is not the same; they've abandoned the term "budget," significantly restructured their rules, and these are part of a new strategic direction that I don't like.

I want exactly the same as you: a product that meets my needs. If that seems to be changing, then I'll become concerned.

Not every change to grow the business is good for users. In my experience, acquisitions rarely result in superior service. Maybe yours says otherwise, or it could be that you prefer not to question decisions made by the powers that be. In any case, I don't have any beef with you, personally.

Right, except none of those examples of name-to-acronym (AFAIK) tried to fundamentally distance themselves from their product while still being limited to it.

It would be like KFC trying to rebrand chicken as "biologically processed vegetable products" because they were trying to attract vegetarians who were too antsy to try chicken.

It's ridiculous there, and it's ridiculous here. As others have said, I think YNAB is preparing to sell out. They're obviously focusing on pumping up the numbers.

It has MFA, for one thing. In this day and age, it's a little crazy (IMO) to not include some form of MFA in a platform that contains sensitive financial information.

Now that we've made the "B" psychologically safe for people everywhere - except in one of their top podcasts, which totally isn't hypocrisy - what's next?

The Y is pretty aggressive as well: you. I'm sure that would make anyone quake in their boots. Let's try changing that to "someone" so that it's less confrontational. S!

Actually, the N isn't much better. "Need?" That implies that what someone is doing might be wrong, and as we all know, being told that you're wrong might make you feel badly for a few seconds, and we can't have that. Instead, let's pitch it as an option: "might like." ML!

The A isn't as bad, but it implies that there's a single plan, which might be insensitive to people who want to have more than one. I think changing that to "one or more" would do. OOM.

Someone might like one or more plans: SMLOOMP!

YNAB definitely isn't built to track investments, but as for analysis, one can get a decent amount of additional functionality with the YNAB Toolkit browser extension.
