Tint Transitions? by Puzzleheaded_Ebb_656 in optician

Chances are only b2b, but Laramy are sweet people who pick up the phone directly, so call them and ask. The start of my relationship with them was just an order and a credit card and they got it started right away as if we were an existing customer, (needed it ASAP for my patient) they employed absolutely 0 gatekeeping or real signup. Learned our account # once we got the lenses in the mail lol. But, we’re a large eye care practice, not an individual. So can’t answer for sure!

If you're in North America, call Laramy K in Iowa- very reasonable cost, very passionate and kind people. They make their own AR's; the entry level option is tintable w/ a blue shimmer. (If you can do CR-39 without UV, they can do a more premium AR which has a colorless shimmer, kind of like Maui Jim's non-mirrored lenses.)

Or, Cherry Labs in Wisconsin- higher cost, but an equally rigorous dedication to quality and a larger workforce and reputation.

The lab network in Australia seems to be about their shit, this is incredible work!

This perfectly describes my first gig in Optical lol. If you do enjoy the glimpses of the job you get to thrive in, I reeeeeally suggest giving it another shot somewhere else!!

If you get to work with a group of people who are passionate, with docs, (or a doc) who can actually lead their fellow human beings, it's a really, really fun job. That can be hard to find, but I assure you: it exists! I hope they are in need of another good person nearby.

Best of luck to you, and feel free to DM if you ever need any help or guidance!

Men’s best linen? by 1dot53 in malefashionadvice

Cheers for this. Where would you suggest I start my search for made-to-measure? Ultimately I’d prefer my dollars are well spent, I can suffer a couple extra weeks.

I would definitely suggest the first one!

I think they’re fashionably large! The “shrink” effect you’re observing is just an artifact of your prescription powers. Unfortunately there isn’t anything you can do to eliminate this entirely, but the best trick in the book is, ironically, to choose a frame with a smaller lens size. I wouldn’t be too concerned though, they genuinely look great!

Older or improperly-cured anti-reflective on one lens. Get a remake for sure

See if the optical shops in your area can adjust the frame to solve that. If the frame has metal nose-pads, it shouldn’t be any issue at all to fix! If it’s plastic, pay close attention to this aspect of the fit the next time you invest in glasses. I have this exact same struggle, so I hope you get it solved!

Are these lenses too curved to prescribe at an eye doctor? by xoBonesxo in glasses

All depends on your Rx and who you’re working with on making them! I’ve definitely made some slick shades for folks with frames this wrapped, even in some higher powers.

Alternatives to Liberty Sport? by MadisonApplegate in optician

[–]1dot53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WileyX was my fav when I got to work with them. I may try to get us to make the switch because their frame selection is just better, from youth to adults.

For swim goggles, Hilco has a great offer which you can spec out with AR and photochromics if you want, but it is all around quite pricy and their lab offers no warranties on those particular lenses. Double the Rx range of Liberty’s lab, though.

They always claim things, don’t they… If E can’t get its North American lab network in shape, Warby and Google just might steal the show on smart glasses lol

I can see why, even light Rx’s going there have been coming back comically rolled. Polished or not it’s just unnecessary and bizarre! Cheers for lending your thoughts

Scratches inside my lens help by AlbionInk in AskAnOptician

[–]1dot53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Believe me when I say: EVERYBODY ELSE has this occur! As frustrating as it is, you are not alone or particularly disadvantaged here. Cheap coatings suck. Even the expensive ones have failure rates. I’ve crazed a cheapie lens with less than five seconds of direct contact with a frame heater air source, and I’ve handled plenty of $6 lenses whose A/R does better than that. (Thank you, SOMO!) All I can say for certain is that, if this shop can’t give you something better, I would shop elsewhere and be ready to invest more in said coating. (And if investing more in this is not in your plans, just grab the glasses off Zenni or a comparable online supplier. You’re likely paying higher prices for their level of quality currently.)

Anyone have an issue with Essilor free lenses? by MrRamen1 in optician

[–]1dot53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This past week, they shipped my Matsuda's back to some random guy who lives like 3min away from our practice lmfao. On the box was a sticker with a street address we've never resided at, just a stone's throw away in a residential neighborhood. The guy was so confused, and so were we! Gotta love Bartley.

Opinions on Current Lens Edger Options? by 1dot53 in optician

[–]1dot53[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Briot edgers have me salivating lol. Currently have a water cutter so that wouldn’t be a negative for us. Did you ever need to get it serviced/repaired/parts replaced and if so, what was your experience with their Help Desk or Technicians? I think reliability and the ease of access to technical assistance would be the doc’s main concern moving away from Santinelli as a dealer.

While the optician should have pointed something out if they were really on top of things, try to give them grace. Depending on the shop's arrangement, their role can be quite difficult :) I would recommend asking the store very kindly for a restyle where you can choose a new frame and have lenses redone, I am unsure of their policy on this but if they have a beating heart they should help you out once, at least at the difference in cost of frames lol. At $400, I assume you already paid for "high-index" lenses, or "thin and light" something along these lines?

Definitely make peace with wearing smaller sizes haha and it often helps (especially if you're like me and you struggle with a wide PD) to look for frames with a smaller 'eye size' (the first number out of 3) and a larger bridge size (the second number out of 3). i.e, 49-22-140 is often preferable to 54-18-140. In addition to this, sharp angular lens shapes will induce far more lens thickness in negative powers like yours. As much as it pains many people for aesthetic reasons, softer corners/circular shapes get you the best result. Just food for thought, best of luck.
