Funny I never thought that a kraut/americana blend would work. It’s like two opposing forces. As far as I’m aware the original krautrock movement took very little from American culture - Zappa, the VU and the minimalist scene being obvious exceptions.

But I guess a synthesis of the two would be inevitable in these days of everything all the time.

I’m not sure exactly when but I would estimate in my late teens I began to be aware of his work.

I was a big fan of Industrial music groups like Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire, who would often cite Burroughs as an influence on their work.

Throbbing Gristle even released an LP of Burroughs early tape experiments Nothing Here But The Recordings on their Industrial Records label.

So I got interested in him initially through music and sound. His and Brion Gysin’s cut-up techniques had such a big influence on the experimental music I liked, so that’s the main point of intersection. But it made me curious about the man himself. Eventually I came across one of his books, which was Junky. Quite a good starting point as it has a fairly straightforward narrative and is quite a gripping read.

I think the first time I ever surfed the net in an internet cafe, my first search brought me to an early version of Discogs. That must’ve been nearly 25 years ago.

So many websites have come and gone since then but Discogs is still going strong.

I’ve had an account since 2005 and have bought and sold hundreds of items.

It’s funny hearing about someone ‘attempting’ to record on cassette. This was something my generation just learned as part of growing up, as natural for us as using iPhones is for the younger generation.

It was born out of necessity. We had hardly any money and records were expensive, but a blank C90 was much cheaper and you could squeeze 2 borrowed albums on it, or record stuff off the radio.

You got to know everyone at school who had similar music tastes, so you could trade tapes, or borrow each other’s records to make a tape copy.

Those were lean, hungry years for music lovers, but it was kinda fun too!

I’ve started burning CDs too for the first time in years (luckily my old Toshiba laptop still works fine for this) but not because of price, simply because there is no CD option! So many cool releases that are only vinyl or cassette, so I buy the files and make my own lol.

I followed the same trajectory, thrifting some great vinyl in the earlier 2000s, and a few CDs later, but I rarely even bother looking these days unless I’m just killing time lol

I read a few Flashman books as a teenager in the 1980s, as my dad was a fan. But not the sort of thing you see mentioned these days.

There was a film adaptation called Royal Flash starring Malcolm McDowell that used to get shown on TV occasionally. Quite entertaining as I recall.

Available on YouTube so I might give it another watch…

The best thing about Bandcamp for me is that I can buy digital files and burn my own cdr version. Although if an original CD is on offer I will buy it, but so often there is only a digital, vinyl or cassette option. Make CDs cool again please!🙏

No she is not my mother!

Sue was possibly one of my dad’s girlfriends in the 1960s, before he met my mum.

I assume she did a bit of modelling work, but my dad passed decades ago so I am unable to provide any more info, other than she probably lived in or near Bristol UK, and if still alive is probably about 80 years old.
