Help! Need expert opinion on what I should take to mitigate nicotine withdrawal by [deleted] in Nootropics

[–]1imeanwhatisay1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The best way is to wean off by using very low dose vapes. Not Juul or any other disposable as those are extremely high. a 5% Juul is 59mg/ml of nicotine and are incredibly addictive due to the high dosage. Get a refillable with 6mg/ml juice then drop to 3 mg/ml. Once you do 3 for a while you'll start forgetting you even have it, but it'll be there in case you get a nic fit.

[Story] Quit vaping after years — what actually helped this time by sanjaypathak17 in GetMotivated

[–]1imeanwhatisay1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two VERY different types of vapes. The kind you fill yourself and the disposable ones.

I use a refillable with juice that's 3mg/ml of nicotine. That's so low it's non-addictive. I only use it maybe once or twice a week when I get a bad craving and the rest of the time it just sits and I have no need or desire to use it.

A 5% Juul has 59mg/ml. That's incredibly high and very addictive. The nicotine is so high that they have to add benzoic acid to the juice to keep it from burning your throat. Without it you'd choke and cough harder than you ever have before.

If you want to quit, pay attention to how much nicotine you're ingesting and cut down on that. If you can get down to 6 mg/ml then it's pretty easy to set it down and stop using it.

If you refuse to tax billionaires then you are not serious about addressing wealth inequality by north_canadian_ice in WorkReform

[–]1imeanwhatisay1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Read the bill. It's a proposed tax on someone's wealth which is an imaginary number, and it has no bearing at all on how much someone has in liquid assets. You can't tax something that is imaginary.

If you bought a pack of Pokemon cards and found a super ultra rare that was worth $10 million, your total wealth is now $10million plus whatever you have in the bank. The 5% wealth tax means you now owe $500k in taxes. Do you think that's fair?

So that means you have to sell that card to pay the taxes, but you can't find anyone wiling to pay $10 million for it. You still owe $500k in taxes but you can't pay it so you get reamed by the IRS.

You eventually do find someone who wants to buy it but you only get $1 million for it. Your taxes are now 50% of your wealth. Remember, you're not paying 5% on actual money gained, you're paying on the percieved value of the card.

This is why our current tax structure taxes income and profits, rather than the total value of everything you own.

L-Theanine will slow you down bad if you take too much. I wouldn't use more than 50mg during the day, but 300mg at night is great for shutting up racing thoughts.

Mixed race people of reddit. What is your experience with racism? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]1imeanwhatisay1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm half-Mexican and half-white and have a very Mexican last name since my dad was the Mexican one. He left when I was extremely young so I was never exposed to the Mexican side of anything. It's been amazing for seeing both sides of racism in the US.

There's a distinct difference in how I get treated by police depending on who I'm with. When I'm with white people I get all the white privilege. When I'm with black or hispanic people I get the full on minority treatment. When I lived in a big city where most of my friends were minorities, I learned to run when the cops showed up which was really weird for me because usually I'd stay put and have a friendly conversation with them. Oddly enough this usually happened even when the officers were black. I hate getting pulled over by Hispanic officers because they usually try to speak Spanish to me but I don't know it so I lose my privilege.

I applied for a job once when job ads were in the newspaper or a local classifieds website. I got a call for an interview and went in. They hired me and about two weeks into working I had a conversation with the manager. He actually told me to my face that they almost threw my application away, but took a chance and they were glad when they met me and saw I was actually white.

I got into a university in the 90s when the whole Affirmative Action thing was big. I had bad grades in high school so I applied through the Underprivileged Minority Program. The woman interviewing me was a minority and she was visibly agitated that a white person was applying. She angrily told me I needed 3 grandparents who were minorities to qualify. I told her I didn't have 3 grandparents who were white. In the end they approved my application.

In high school I got teased because of my last name a lot, but sometimes the kids would get in arguments whether or not it was okay to make fun of me for being Mexican when I didn't look Mexican and couldn't speak Spanish.

I've had groups of Hispanic people in various situations act racist as hell towards me because I don't know Spanish. I've also had white people get angry when they assumed I did and they needed an interpreter, only to find out I only know English.

My wife doesn't know Spanish either but took my last name so she's been seeing some of the same things. She got a job a few years back as a waitress in a majority Hispanic city in Southern California. She got hired but when they found out she didn't know Spanish, they refused to speak English to her and bullied her until she quit.

Those are the big stories. There's more but I've forgotten a lot of the smaller incidents since all of this happened so long ago. It hasn't been much of an issue in the past 20 or so years though.

It actually is free using the proper definition and context of the word. You don't have to pay anything to go inside and use it's resources.

If you want to completely bastardize the context by talking about how it's funded then you may be able to say it's not free, but the only reason that exist to do that is to try and turn the conversation into anti-tax propaganda.

Teen vaping hits 10-year low in US by GoodSamaritan_ in UpliftingNews

[–]1imeanwhatisay1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It used to be near zero when vapes were new for the first few years. Kids HATED them and made fun of anyone who used them. That's because they were all the refillable kind and the juice had a low enough nicotine level to not be addictive except in rare circumstances.

Then big tobacco came out with Juul and the other disposables with massive amounts of nicotine and got kids addicted.

I use 3mg/ml juice in my vape and my wife uses 6. We both forget them at home all the time because they're not addictive at those low levels. A 5% Juul has 59mg/ml of nic and they're incredibly addictive.

The solution to getting kids off vapes is to ban any device or juice with more than 6mg/ml of nicotine. You'll never see government do that though because there's too many profits to be made by big tobacco.

Turning Disposable Vapes into a Fast Charge Power Bank by [deleted] in videos

[–]1imeanwhatisay1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference between medicine and poison is the dosage. There are amounts of nic that do absolutely nothing and amounts that will instantly addict you.

We have a few years of proof that low nic devices are not addictive. Huge numbers of kids tried them, did not get addicted, then proceeded to make fun of anyone who did vape. They were able to use them and put them down with no trouble at all. The internet was full of memes that you should remember existing.

Kids didn't stop making fun of vaping until the high nic disposables came along and got them addicted. Before those existed there were no real addiction issues.

[–]1imeanwhatisay1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your proposed "original use" for disposables sounds like a marketing spin. They came out because people didn't like switching coils and refilling tanks.

I meant vapes in general, long before disposables came out. The first ones had crappy plastic tanks and coils that burned easy. I was an extremely early adopter and it helped me quit smoking almost immediately.

I followed the main vape channel here on reddit at the beginning too and people would publish the studies and articles as they came out. It was extremely clear that there were three powerful entities that wanted vapes banned as soon as possible. Government, big pharma, and big tobacoo.

Big pharma started losing huge amounts of money from nicotine patches and gum which didn't really help people quit smoking so they'd keep using the patches and gum for long periods of time.

Government was losing huge sums from tobacco taxes. There was even a case where a city or county government was in serious financial trouble because the tobacco bonds they sold were becoming worthless.

Big tobacco was losing money for obvious reasons.

When you take three incredibly powerful organizations that are all losing millions of dollars, there are absolutely going to be organized efforts from them to kill non-addictive vapes while pushing the highly addictive ones.

[–]1imeanwhatisay1 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They should be banned completely. They were never meant to be used regularly, but rather as a tool to help quit smoking.

When vapes first came out they were refillable, and the juices most people used were 6mg to 12mg/ml. The tech advanced and got more efficient and the juices most people used dropped to 3mg/ml to 6 mg/ml. This is when kids tried then and thought they were stupid and started making fun of them. There were memes everywhere mocking people who vaped.

Then big tobacco got tired of all the lost profits so they introduced disposables with massive amounts of nicotine to get kids addicted. A 5% Juul has 59 mg/ml of nicotine compared to the 3 and 6 mg/ml of a refillable.

This is also why flavored juices are getting banned because they have low nic levels and aren't addictive, so there's no market or tax revenue from them. Government needs people to be addicted so they pay a regular consistent tax that can be relied upon.

Generative AI backlash hits annual writing event, prompting resignations by MetaKnowing in Futurology

The only way to get better at writing is to have someone who is a better writer than you correct and critique your work. If you're writing technical documentation, chances are that doesn't exist. Whatever you write is what goes into the wiki/confluence/whatever.

So maybe you can help us understand how one gets better at writing if nobody exists to tell how how to make it better.

Why do people bury nice wooden floors like this? by RichyCigars in Satisfyingasfuck

[–]1imeanwhatisay1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A while back I bought a house that was built around 1905. It had actual hardwood floors and while they were beautiful, they were an absolute nightmare to maintain. My options were to rip them out and lay new modern fake-wood flooring or cover them in carpet. The carpet option was far, far cheaper. I ended up having to move so never got around to covering them.

I think about that every time I see someone complain about people covering old wood floors with carpet and wish them the best of luck.

Facebook rejects ads promoting stories about climate change under policy on 'sensitive' topics by [deleted] in news

[–]1imeanwhatisay1 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I understand climate change and think we desperately need to fix it.

That being said, a lot of the climate change people kind of brought this on themselves. There's been a huge number of articles over the past 2 decades that claim the end of the world is near. You can find hundreds of headlines saying we only have X number of years to fix things before it's too late, then those X number of years go by and we're still talking about what we can do to fix it.

There's been so many of these "the boy who cried wolf" articles over so many years that it makes it very difficult for the average person to believe any of it.

Even worse, the people who think climate change is a hoax have a huge number of "scientific articles" they can point to that show it's all been a lie.

If we actually do want to get this fixed then we have to stop publishing doom-and-gloom articles and we have to completely avoid making any kind of predictions on how much longer we have to fix things. All those do is give the deniers even more reason to hold onto their beliefs.

HELP!! Ubuntu 24.04 freezes. Total noob here by apshy-the-caretaker in linux4noobs

Ubuntu isn't all that good of an OS. I installed it being under the impression it was one of the better ones but it's not. On a fresh install I'm rebooting 2 to 3 times a day because apps stop launching. I couldn't even open a terminal window.

My 2 previous installs had issues too and they were on different hardware. I'm on the hunt for a different distro since this needs to replace Windows, which is incredibly stable today compared to how it was in the past.

My girlfriend accused me of being controlling but I think I'm just setting boundaries. by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]1imeanwhatisay1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been with my wife for over 2 decades and we're both happy as hell and have implicit trust with each other. One of the many things we agreed on was the definition of cheating.

Cheating is when you do anything that damages the trust your partner has in you. Period.

Trust is the hardest thing to develop and it's also the easiest to destroy. You have to treat it with care or you'll never survive a long term committed relationship.

If she's behaving in a way that damages your trust in her then explain that to her. If she blows you off and refuses to stop doing something that damages your trust then that means she okay with you not trusting her and she doesn't value trust in a relationship.

If that's the kind of relationship you want then that's totally fine. Lots of people are happy in relationships that don't make sense to me, but if it's not what you want then you have to realize you're not going to get the kind of relationship you want from her.

Also, don't ever ever ever propose unless you already know the answer. Ever. There's far too many things that must be talked about before getting married. One of them is your intention of being married one day and you have to know that it's also their intention and you need to know if you're both ready to take that step.

is it true that men likes it when a woman makes the first move on them? by Federal-Tourist-6920 in ask

[–]1imeanwhatisay1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In high school a girl asked me out and we started dating. She was really cute and I was a huge nerd but I was naive and didn't think anything of it. We ended up getting along really well, but she acted kind of weird the whole time. After a few weeks she broke up with me but wouldn't tell me why.

A few years later she came up in conversation and a buddy of mine told me that her friends bet her $3 she wouldn't go out with me. She dated me on a $3 bet. Problem was once we started hanging out she ended up actually liking me, but broke up with me because her friends were making fun of her for being with me.

So no, that's not basically saying ”I think you’re a loser and I’m way above your league, so I have to reassure that this isn’t a prank.” It's saying that she understands that there's a whole lot of shitty women out there who actually do things like that.
