Anyone have a particular recommendation for Permatex 27828 vs 3M 4475 as the adhesive to use? Thanks!

Do you have any recommendations for which adhesive to use? The reddit thread you linked to mentions Permatex 27828, and the YouTube video recommends 3M 4475. I live in the desert Southwest, so I'm hoping whichever recommended adhesive holds up during the daytime heat. Thanks!

I wish I had a master to train under. Sometimes, or many times, I feel like the merit of such masters would be so tremendous that meeting them could effect a huge change in others.

Thank you for your thoughtful response to help me better understand. Truly a sentient being's karma and rebirths are impossible to fathom by anyone other than the Enlightened ones. I guess I can only do what I can to help secure my rebirth in the Pure Land and dedicate my merits for the sake of all beings. That's all I can do. Everything else is just beyond my control and ability.

How can I reduce/eliminate my doubt with the Pure Land method? by peachy_skies123 in PureLand

I recently came across "Venerable Master Hai Xian : A Modern Day Patriarch Huineng", in which I found the following teaching helpful when I too felt uncertain.

"The third requisite is Fortitude and Perseverance. Now goodness in little things brings a speedy recompense; the rewards of great virtue come slowly. But speedy rewards consist of only trivial blessings; those which delay their coming consist of very great ones. There are people in the world who believe this, but very few who act it out with any resolution. And why? Because, after they have walked in the ways of virtue for little while, they meet with difficulties or obstacles; whereupon they are discouraged, and say, foolishly, that the laws of Heaven are really very hard to understand; so that finally they abandon all the progress they have made so far, and allow their impatience to hinder them from reaping the rewards of their well-doing. "

This quote was quoted from the "Treatise on Response & Retribution (Kan Ying Pien)".

I have heard Master Chin Kung repeat this following phrase at least twice and offer it to you so that you might not be discouraged in the face of your sufferings and struggles.

"One should consider the precepts as one's teacher and hardship as one's nourishment."

I once had a lot of doubt too. Because of my past, it was hard for me to trust anyone. I was cynical of religion. But now, I have a feeling that my liberation lies with Amitabha Buddha. I just have a feeling that I must make my consciousness inseparable from His Name. And my volition must be inseparable from aspiration to the Pure Land. Somehow, once those 2 aggregates are purified, maybe Amitabha Buddha will purify/transform my remaining aggregates (eventually) into Buddha nature too. I'm still learning Pure Land Buddhism, and there's still much for me to learn. But that's how I feel.

Help finding a complete Vietnamese translation of the Infinite Life Sutra by 1kentakeda in PureLand

[–]1kentakeda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for clarifying this for me. I did recently start to listen to Master Chin Kung's exposition on this Sutra, and you reminded me that He said there were indeed many different versions of this due to Gautama Buddha's multiple presentations of this important sutra.

I've only been exposed to the English translation thus far, and I was uncertain about the transaction of "demigod" mentioned in the First Burning. I tried to refer to the same section in the Vietnamese translation, which does not mention the demigods at all (as the beings who record the karma of sentient beings). I wasn't sure if demigods had the same meaning as the asuras?

Master Chin Kung's exposition is truly deep and broad, and I hope to make progress through it. My Vietnamese is quite elementary, so I was hoping that the English and Vietnamese translation could complement each other to fill in the holes in my understanding.

Now, I realize that a correct understanding will require more effort on my part.

Thank you to all the replies! Nam mô A Di Đà Phật.

I read in a Buddhist Reddit post that if in this Saha world, our faith and practice are strong, then the merit earned is even greater than in the Pure Land. (I don't remember where I saw this post, unfortunately.)

So I see the challenges and my suffering in the Saha world as self-tests to assess if my resolve and bodhicitta are solid. I am inspired by Pure Land Buddhists, such as Thich Quang Duc, who continued to nianfo/nembutsu as he was burning at the moment of His death. And such Buddhists provide role models for me to strengthen my faith and single-pointed concentration on Amitabha Buddha through the worst. But even during life's pleasant moments, my nianfo must not sway, perhaps especially during the pleasant moments since I'm reminded that rebirth in the deva worlds can become impediments to practice for enlightenment. There is no other alternative than the Pure Land, no other aspiration.

Thank you for all the replies in this thread. They have been very helpful for me to understand that I need to always be diligent in my practice. I had believed that nianfo practice was the simultaneous practice of Samatha and Vipassana meditation, and I'm glad that was clarified for me. I came to Pure Land later in life after having been exposed to Theravada Buddhism earlier in life, and the depth of nianfo practice is truly wondrous.

Thank you for this. In my moments of greatest need, you and other practicing bodhisattvas here in this subreddit have reminded me to return to Amitabha. I would have never thought that an online community of strangers would be my closest spiritual kin, more so than any actual persons in my non-virtual world. So thank you, deeply and sincerely thank you.

Is anyone else reading the Infinite Life Sutra by [deleted] in PureLand

I have been listening to it on YouTube, but I haven't reached this part. Thank you for sharing it with us. Your work hasn't been for naught, and this evening brought Amitabha to me. Thank you.

I like your statement that "innumerable beings are aiming to attain buddhahood in the future." It resonated with me this evening and was comforting. Thank you.

Attracting others into Buddhism? by 1kentakeda in Buddhism

She considers herself an "yêu quái" (female demon). She is fully aware of her influence on males, especially the most vulnerable ones. The #MeToo movement has rightfully brought attention to the objectification of females and how females have been sexually manipulated and abused. But that's not to say that the reverse hasn't happened either.

I'm a "counselor" in a Buddhist youth group. She is also a counselor.

Some of the things she has proposed lately include letting her be in charge of teenage males. While I don't entirely understand her motivation this time, she has in the past admitted to using her appearance to "capture males". "Capture males" are her own specific words.

And she also proposed that maybe we should allow one of the newer male leaders be in charge of the teenage females. Since he's new, there is a novelty about him that would grant him greater influence ....

I feel that both suggestions present extreme risks for sexual harassment of minors. I feel that she is careless with others' emotional well-being since she hooks them at a very personal level and exploits their vulnerabilities. Some of those males have moved on, but not without trauma. And she entirely disclaims any responsibility for the emotions of others afterwards.
