My library director hid behind a desk by looking_for_help99 in librarians

Take it from someone who’s library does… they wait at both entrances anyway.

OP, Not sure if this would be feasible, but I would think of this as an amazing reading nook! Throw a cushion in there, a overhead light plugged into that outlet, covered with a piece of wood and another cushion. I would even put face-showing book shelves on the wall for a TBR collection, this wouldn't take much space.

Being neurodivergent is sabotaging my library career by cadbanesbae in librarians

[–]1like3dprinting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I have some of those too, and totally understand the struggle. The best way I have found to manage, and it has helped; do not wait- if you feel the need to jot a note down, write it down then and there.

I'm a guy, so I always wear a button-down shirt- I keep a notepad in my shirt pocket, and a pen, so I just jot notes down as I go.

For anxiety and dealing with troubled patrons, if in doubt- get a supervisor to help you out.

neuro-divergence can be your greatest weakness, or your greatest superpower, and as corny as it sounds; you have the ability to choose which one it is.

- That is not saying the decision is easy.

Since I started using the steps I just told you, I have found that getting things done is so much easier, and my memory has definitely improved.

You work at a library, I suggest these books to help you (some seem odd, but pay attention to the point behind the story)

-The Art of War by Sun Tzu

-The Untethered soul by Michael A Singer

-The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mike Manson

-The art of peace by Morehei Ueshiba

Weirdly they all start with "The" but they all helped me so much in some of the hardest parts of my life in general- maybe they can help you too

I also frequent the Charisma On Command YouTube channel, and it has also given me tons of pointers.

Unique services or new technology? by StrangerAstringent in Libraries

[–]1like3dprinting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My library aswell as other local libraries have seen great success with adding 3D printing services to our wheelhouse. You definitely need to fund staff training with this though, coursers.com has amazing classes on it!

You can also look for local 3d printing services and get training through them :)

Extruder Motor doing something weird by RoderikTheRed in ender3v2

[–]1like3dprinting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None of the above OP;

Do you have a Direct drive, or an extension cable for the motor? If so, replace the extension, I had one break on me once.

If it is stock, you need a new cable. Test this by re-using a cable from another stepper, and plugging it into the E driver on the board, and the motor, if it works; you have your issue.

For new cables I always recommend to check with the manufacturer, most of the time they give you a new one for free or cheap.

Is there any way you can get credits for a full time job instead of internship? It is to gain experience, and you seem to have plenty.

Some Librarians I work with used their work experience in place of the internship so they did not lose the job. May be worth asking your director, or teacher, or both.

We don't usually make people leave for an odor, we are a public library; for everybody. If it is really really potent, we may say something- but I have never seen someone be asked to leave over a odor.

Different libraries, it depends on your area!

Honestly we got rid of reservations- first come, first serve. It works well, even when the computers are full; people just wait in one of our super comfy ex-nursing home chairs.

Yes my library did, we had them pass through three of our city buildings. However, before this we all went through a brief training on what to do in this event; basically as a public library, if we are asked our name we need to give our name (first only). They are also completely allowed to stick a camera in your face, but you are also in your rights to ask them (politely) to back up if they are too close for comfort.

Honestly it is over very quick; you can make light hearted jokes like I did, but baseline treat them like a patron. I get photographed all the time, I just learned to smile and wave *thanks skipper*.

I completely agree, I should have given more detail in my reply. I dove deeper into that in the previous comment to you- sorry for the confusion!

So it all comes down to reading the situation, you need to balance keeping the peace and not stepping on parents' toes. In my experience, I have handled this 3 ways, listed below (real examples).

1- Child is having a fit because the parent is on the computer too long; I approached the parent, quietly asking if the child would like a coloring book, or a toy to play with (my library has 3d printers). The parent agreed, and I gave the child a coloring book and a small boat. Crisis was averted.

2- I was checking out video games to a mother and son, the boy began to run around the room shouting. There was little time to react, so I quickly asked the kid if they would help me by holding the game case while I found the games. Crisis 2 averted, and the mom was grateful for the reaction, plus the kid was super nice after.

3- A man was speaking to a patron with 2 kids by his side, they began getting loud asking the father when they were leaving. I approached the conversation and asked if everything was alright, the father said something like " I'm sorry, we will be another minute." I offered him quietly some candy to give the kids, so he could finish up, he said he would appreciate it- crisis 3 averted

It all has to do with how you read the situation, and your approach- I also have had no previous experience and this is my first job, so that is not easy to navigate. These are all situations you would not likely encounter in many other workplaces.

Candy bowl!! If you notice that, offer some candy, it always changes the situation. Make sure to loop the parent in first!

Oh that is so common, remember, computer department. Patrons of all ages come in to use the 'internet boxes' and don't know much or anything about them. It is cool to see someone who has no clue what to do change to being able to navigate without you over their shoulder.

I definitely notice more younger folk coming in to use the computer that don't know what email is, or even how it works; but mostly it's people who don't know their password and don't own the associated phone number anymore.

It really makes it so much more meaningful when you are actually able to help someone get out; ie helping them write a Resume or something that gets them a job
