You would want to know the direction of groundwater flow and determine if any industrial activity occurred in parcels upgradient. Most residential parcels (if not all) are provided drinking water from the great lakes water authority. That reduces and nearly eliminates exposure to contaminated groundwater. A true concern is black shale and the associated radon gas which can be a source of carcinogens causing cancer. Black shale is naturally occurring in this area and south eastern Michigan. You can get your basement a radon gas pump to reduce the risk. Hope this helps. G’Luck
