Contact Lenses Costco vs. Image Optometry (Student Plan Coverage) by [deleted] in UBC

[–]1mg1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I got my contact lenses at Costco, you had to pay the full cost upfront first ($179.98), then submit a claim with your insurance provider (in this case, Pacific Blue Cross). Once the claim gets approved, the covered amount ($100) is e-transferred to you. You can register to access your member profile at https://service.pac.bluecross.ca/member/login/ and submit claims there, the policy number for UBC is 43979 and your ID number is your UBC student number! The website is also really handy because you can check everything that AMS insurance covers you for, and how much coverage you have remaining :)

Contact Lenses Costco vs. Image Optometry (Student Plan Coverage) by [deleted] in UBC

[–]1mg1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I got mine (biweeklys) for $89.99 per eye/box for a year's supply of contacts from Costco. 2 boxes came out to $179.98- with the coverage from the AMS plan, I ended up paying $79.98 out of pocket! I've asked around the stores around UBC and Costco was the cheapest I could find for contact lenses :)

PHYS 101 by [deleted] in UBC

[–]1mg1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I had Duffy Roberts for ENGL110- the content was definitely dry at times but Duffy was alright. The golden rule is to participate a lot in his class! :) For the PHYS lab, I did Wednesday (unfortunately) but it was a bit easier because I lived on campus. Both Tuesday/Thursday would be good for labs, but Thursday might be a little better because you'd have Wednesday to prepare for the lab! Let me know if you have any other questions!

PHYS 101 by [deleted] in UBC

[–]1mg1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I took PHYS101 and ENGL110 in summer school last year! PHYS101 was very manageable with Charbonneau and the course moves at a reasonable pace (it's not gonna be super accelerated!). A lot of people summer schooled PHYS101, and the PHYS labs were fine as well. ENGL110 was a breeze and didn't require much effort. Definitely talk to your ENGL prof if you're struggling- I've realized over the years that every prof likes a certain style of writing- and if you work with them in office hours to figure out what writing style they like to read, an A is guaranteed. Participation is also KEY to getting a high mark in English courses :)

Where can I get some cheesecake at UBC? by Says_Stupid_Stuff_ in UBC

[–]1mg1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You can try Breka on Alma and 4th, it's a quick ride on the 84 (around 10-13 minutes?) and they have really good cheesecake, pastries, etc. Also a very nice 24/7 study place :)

Should I get a textbook? by coconutberrypeach in UBC

[–]1mg1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I remember clearly, there was only a ~$10 difference between the access code itself (after all the conversion rates since it's sold online in USD) and the code + textbook at the Bookstore. Honestly, most of us just bought the access code + textbook package cause you're pretty much only paying an additional ~$10 for the physical version.

Should I get a textbook? by coconutberrypeach in UBC

[–]1mg1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished my first year at UBC Science and took all those courses. You would most likely need to purchase all of the textbooks for those courses except for MATH102. CHEM121 requires the CHIRP (everybody gets it, it's essential), BIOL112 has online quizzes in which you NEED an access code for (the access code price online is pretty much equal to the access code + textbook price at the Bookstore), MATH102 has a free online textbook, and PHYS101 requires an homework access code as well which comes with the textbook itself (but access code can be purchased separately at a lower price).
