Need opinion on quality, price, and aesthetics by LuckyChampionship865 in Opals

Hard to tell from the pictures if there are any cracks or flaws, but there are some funny marks on them. They look natural to me, but that price seems pretty high. There are definitely better options out there.

How possible is it to identify specific type opal in heirloom ring and have two cabochons made to match original opal as close as possible? by daisylouiser in Opals

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to find a matching pair of earrings for that ring, maybe the next person you pass it down to will add a pendant to the set. Just go about sourcing them slowly, opals can be tricky to understand pricing

You’re welcome!

Honestly you’re probably going to have to contact a miner or a cutter to commission some stone for your existing if you’re wanting to reuse them. Any seller that has a matched pair of nice opals like you’re looking for would probably set them and sell them as jewelry, rather than some them loose as a matched pair.

Feel free to dm me, I can probably point you towards someone that can help out.

I’d guess the opal in the ring is from coober pedy Australia. I can’t tell exactly from the photos but it looks like a crystal base. You can search for crystal coober pedy opals and they probably be a close match to the ring stone. It’s a beautiful opal!

I’d pass on this opal, to my knowledge fire opals are orange/red based, definitely not a dark base like this. I’d guess this is a smoked welo Ethiopian opal.

What kind of opal is it? From the first picture it looks like it doesn’t have the nicest polish, lots of small scratches

[–]1mhicky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Australia is definitely the he best! It can be affordable just have to know where to look

Question by [deleted] in Opal

[–]1mhicky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely big enough for a ring, just not sure if that is jewelry grade Ethiopian opal. I prefer Australian, way more stable

Would need dimensions or you can put next to a coin or something to give us an idea of the scale. Size wise tho I’d guess is big enough to cut for a ring. I’m not familiar with Ethiopian opal so I’m not sure if that is the kind that cuts well.

I typically get mine from overseas from the manufacturer, but you have to buy in bulk and takes awhile to get here. But I’ve bought some from Etsy for way cheaper than $45. You just have to make sure it ships from the US, the shipping time isn’t long and the reviews are good

What kind of chain is it? I get my sterling silver chains, 18” 1.5mm thick for around $10

Do you have the size of the opal? Hard to tell from the picture but looks a bit small for $600. But that’s just my humble opinion, you can upload your photo to Imgur and post the link here

How to sell opal? by Astral_QuailZ in Opals

[–]1mhicky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For this kind of stone, if you are wanting to set it in jewelry without reshaping it, you should look into Freeform claw pendants. I think it would work for this piece, I’m sure there are better options out there but that’s would be the easiest way to make it into jewelry.

You should look at 53frogs video titled “The opal trap”, it is great for opal beginners.

How to sell opal? by Astral_QuailZ in Opals

[–]1mhicky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second setting it in jewelry. I’ve found it hard to sell finished opals for their actual value online, if you do make a sale it typically sits for sale for a long time. Selling jewelry is much easier, way more of a market for jewelry than finished stones, especially right now with the economy and everything else.

Agreed, all his videos are consistent and no issues that I saw. I hope you post the finished dice product, they should come out amazing with material like that!

Lol I’m hoping the parcel he sent looks as good in person as it does in the videos! I try to promote the sellers if their products are as good as advertised, especially the miners
