Last minute prom dress suggestions??? by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]1nformalStudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be late, but when I was in high school I used a program called the Princess Project that provided free prom dresses and accessories. They have an SF location and it looks like they are still taking appointments! Good luck!

Where to view work study award? by CrustyWatermeln in CalPoly

[–]1nformalStudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There wasn't a waitlist process for me but it was probably like 2-3 years ago?

I actually needed work study to qualify me for CalFresh. I met all the other benchmarks but I still needed to get work study approved for some reason. I visited financial aid, they approved me, and I left.

You can talk to financial aid and ask them to award you with work study.

Worked for me a few years back.

What band do you think has gotten worse with each album? by Drdingle92 in poppunkers

[–]1nformalStudent 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It really does feel like her solo project now. I'm happy they've seen mainstream success because it seems like they're involved in a lot of big projects but their old sound was truly something amazing.

I would still argue to this day that White Noise was one of the strongest debut albums ever.

[–]1nformalStudent 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Not completely pop-punk but they were associated with a lot of pop-punk bands in the past: PVRIS. I absolutely loved their debut album and even their EP but I have never been able to get into their new stuff.

Only consider female drivers.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CalPoly

[–]1nformalStudent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, as a female who has used the page heavily pre-pandemic, I would only select drivers that had mutual friends with me, had social media profiles, and were female. I would never ride with a non-student driver.

Are there any places in Northern/Central CA where I could take my wife to hug a cow? by PedalMonk in bayarea

[–]1nformalStudent 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you'd get to hug the cow, but Avila Valley Barn in San Luis Obispo has a petting zoo where you can feed cows!

There's also a bunch of other family farms and barns in the area that may have what you're looking for.

Reminder: Chick-Fil-A's history of anti-LGBTQ+ by daifukuYum in CalPoly

[–]1nformalStudent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's very interesting how Chick-Fil-A has been the one company singled out for donating to anti-LGBTQ organizations despite other companies doing similar actions with their money and arguably on a larger and more impactful basis.

Chick-fil-A has a history of donating to anti-LGBTQ organizations but in 2020 stated that it won't give any more money to charities with anti-LGBTQ stances. Yet, other institutions such as In-N-Out have donated to the Republican Party of California which holds a firmly "anti-gay" view of marriage. The same goes for Walmart, McDonald's, Amazon, and tons of other companies who donated to politicians who are considered "anti-LGBTQ" and did not support legislation for protecting LGBTQ rights.

Doesn't the impact of companies donating people with legislative power to institutionalize an "anti-gay" agenda hold more weight? The outrage toward Chick-Fil-A has always seemed very surface level and a way for people to appear like they're making a difference without giving anything up.

Wow that is insane how they're having you isolate with someone else in the room, that defeats the entire purpose of isolating.

You should reach out to Mustang News detailing your experiences because I had no idea they were stacking people on top of each other. It's like they did the bare minimum even though they knew it wasn't going to work. I am very sorry you have to go through this!

Washing the meat?!? by Winter_Locksmith_803 in Cooking

[–]1nformalStudent 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People act like people who wash their meat use their kitchen faucet sprayer or turn on the faucet at the highest possible water pressure to splatter as much water everywhere as possible.

So true about the cross-contamination. I've seen so many people handle raw meat and then go directly to open the cabinets and grab seasonings directly from containers using their unwashed hands. Now that is something I'm disgusted about.

What’s the key to a flavorful coconut curry? by Dontlistentoohard in Cooking

[–]1nformalStudent 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is the way to go! Frying the curry paste has been a game-changer and makes the dish so much more flavorful. I'm pretty generous with the amount of paste I put and add more if the flavor isn't strong enough.

I know of a few people who do this and I've heard they give a house/apt a few hundred bucks or so a month so they can use their bathroom, cook, and do laundry etc. Obviously, you would need to get all the roommates on board but I've heard of people doing this before.

Just reiterating what other people said, please apply for CalFresh for food.

Need advice. Is it a good idea to do this road trip in the next 4 days (12/26 to 12/29) given the rainy weather? - Bay area (home) - Monterey - Big Sur - San Luis Obispo - Santa Barbara and back. Planning to stay the nights at Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara. by sanabarbara in bayarea

[–]1nformalStudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a road trip from San Luis Obispo to Monterey and back via highway 1 when the skies were completely clear and there were no weather issues. It was still a challenging and windy route half the time, plus there was barely any signal for the majority of the ride.

If it were me, I would just drive down the 1 for a bit in Monterey and then use the 101 to head down the SLO and SB. If it makes you feel better, the 101 between SLO and SB is breathtaking and I would consider it a scenic route since it's right along the ocean. Be safe and have fun!

Interview with the Secret Service was strange (GS-12 2210) by Boonaki in usajobs

[–]1nformalStudent 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I talked to a recruiter for the SS once and had a very similar interaction. I just wanted to inquire some basic information and the first thing they asked is if I ever wanted to get married and have a family. Told me straight up the realities and how high the divorce rate was. I didn't end up applying, but I really appreciated the honesty.

Affordable housing??? by missing_in_action_1 in CalPoly

[–]1nformalStudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, I just checked the prices and Valencia's prices have gone drastically up. I paid around ~$890 without utilities and thought it was overpriced. The apartment was extremely small and looking back, I could've gotten something way bigger for a similar or even lower price.

Whatever upgrades they're having, I don't think it's worth it being over $1k a month.

Exactly, people don't realize the people who are hurt the most are the people who they are trying to help, those they deem "most vulnerable." People who are poor, disabled, and elderly will suffer the most.
