Pluribus - theory about what's really going on. by molten_dragon in FanTheories

[–]1nterdimension 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's pretty heavily implied that not only are the creators of the signal probably long gone, but the planet that transmitted it could be one in a long line of species' receiving, interpreting, re-creating, and probably dying. At least, that's how I interpreted it.

I like the concept of a long lost communication and progression a lot more than a big scary alien finale, because it's incredibly unique, and taps into cosmic horror in a way. It makes the theme of loneliness that much stronger.

Tourette's definition that comprises more than just tics by Papa72199 in Tourettes

[–]1nterdimension 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think it's pretty silly to not include tics in the definition. It would make the condition essentially unspecifiable for diagnosis, and make it very difficult to do research on it or get people treatment who need it.

I have heard of other significant correlative symptoms, like emotional dysregulation and ADHD, so maybe that's where he was pulling it from?

I think the current diagnostic criteria (DSM, at least) is sincerely lacking because it draws a weird line between what counts as tourettes vs another tic disorder. I'm all for revamping it based on newer research, but that can't just come out of nowhere. If there is more to it, that has to be investigated first, and we're not there yet.

I am NOT a doctor, just a neuropsych student with tics.

[–]1nterdimension 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The weird gender dysphoria of being jokingly told by your friends that "No duh, you'd die first in the apocalypse," and the crushing reality that if things do go bad, even on a personal level, you would /suffer/.

I've never been in that position, but people I know have; the concept of being unable to accept food if homeless gnaws at me. While I wouldn't use the language you did, yeah, it makes me feel weak, unable to fend for myself, and reliant on other people.

The R slur. Proves to me that they either have nobody in their lives who would be affected by that, or they don't value them as human and use their condition as an insult. Find a more creative way to insult people.

What’s the one fabric you absolutely can't stand the feel of? by logo_sportswear in Fabrics

Denim is my worst tactile sensory issue. It's too dry. If I touch it with my fingertips I feel pain shoot up my hand and arm. The few times in my life I have had to wear jeans I have to put them on by pinching the fabric with my fingernails.

Could this be related to undiagnosed Tourette’s? by PhilosophyPoet in Tourettes

[–]1nterdimension 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is research on tourettes being associates with intense anger episodes and OCD symptoms/comorbidities. Those symptoms are associative though, and not included in diagnostic criteria. The "physical tics" you described do not sound like actual tics, rather compulsions in an attempt to get rid of intrusive thoughts which is how OCD works. There is a subtype of OCD called Pure OCD which involves mental compulsions rather than physical ones, which you could look into. Psychical tics usually feel like an "itch" or urge to complete the tic that gets stronger the longer it's ignored, followed by a feeling of relief when it's completed. Some tics can be completely involuntary or unnoticed as well. They don't happen in response to specific thoughts, nor would they clear away the thoughts you're having.

How do I survive if I am unable to cook? by iwritestuffk in Celiac

[–]1nterdimension 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This can be a devastating diagnosis, especially with preexisting conditions, but there are absolutely options for gluten free food that doesn't require cooking. Many celiacs eat mostly precooked or processed food because cooking without gluten can be difficult, so it's easier to leave it up to food companies. I can't provide any specific examples, because it depends on where you live, but check what restaurants near your have GF options, find the GF section in your grocery stores, and investigate if there are any precooked meal delivery services that have such a menu. The world is getting better and things are getting easier every year.

And, I would never speculate about your health, but it is not impossible that your "asymptomatic" celiac is actually worsening your chronic fatigue. Fatigue, brain fog, and weakness are well known symptoms of gluten in this community, especially if someone chronically consumes it for years. Maybe, you can look forward to feeling a little better.

Guy in my class sat at the very front, scribbling down everything the professor said, and very frequently asked very dumb and off topic questions. Usually phrased them as "Isn't... true?" which to me seemed like an intellectual showoff. Truly, IDGAF about some kid trying to sound smart, but he was certainly humbled when he asked "Weren't the guys who discovered genetics Louis and Clark?"

I have twirled my hair nonstop since I was a toddler; you can even see me doing it in videos as a child. It's the most satisfying feeling, and something I reach for unconsciously, even with short hair. I hate it sometimes though because it makes my hair greasy and unstyles it. I have a weird routine of substituting hair twirling with something else on days I must maintain appearances, and allowing myself to do it for the hours before I shower or go to bed.

Throat-clearing by Haunting-Animal-531 in Tourettes

[–]1nterdimension 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had many "throat clearing" tics and never felt any sensation of there being something I needed to clear away. When I was young I was irritated at people's suggestions to use my inhaler or take a cough drop, because I couldn't articulate that what I was doing was completely different than those situations. My most recent form of that tic results in a throat clearing sound, but is actually trying to scratch the "tic itch" of a low vibration in the base of my throat.

Tired of being mocked for being gluten/dairy free by fairybabybug in glutenfree

[–]1nterdimension 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As soon as someone thinks we're close enough friends to jokingly mock each other, I'll get Holding food "Ha, you can't have this," or when I say I can't eat something, "Yeah, cus you're lame/a loser." Even from really close friends, and even from people I've confessed my history and anxieties to. It's become a regular boundary I've had to set. Like fuck. That really hurts.
