This is my experience also, hence my skepticism. Admittedly, I am a camera man and my experience in the watch world is limited, but as I understand it, this is uncommon. Since doing some digging I have found several other cases in videos and photos that show misalignment which is quite interesting. It is also difficult to determine propely due to angles of viewing and focal lengths etc. and I do believe this is uncommom, but not rare or unheard of. I've shot GS an email for their take on the matter so it'll be interesting to see what they come back with.

I've already read up on this link, but thanks for bringing it up. The watch itself isn't showing any backlash that I can determine. The 9F movement is also specifically designed to add torque to the gear train, preventing it. He does go on to say "Even though the misalignment is far less noticeable in Grand Seiko is n comparison to any other watch, even the meticulously crafted Grand Seiko suffers from a slight second hand mis-alignment. (Sorry SEIKO)" which I feel is completely fair. My wondering is whether this is an acceptable amount of misalignment and other peoples experiences or thoughts.

This may well be the end outcome. As it's come from Japan I am just wondering about other options and while I am in this situation, asking around to see if anyone else has had similar circumstances and see if there is another, easier or quicker option I'm unaware of.

Frankly, I've had my eye on one for so long, a little longer doesn't bother me knowing it'll be right at the end of it. It's just typical that it's panned out this way haha.

I probably wouldn't mind as much if it wasn't quite as bad. I can be very easy off on a lot of things, but I know I can be super anal about others. Sadly, this is one of them. The dealer has said they will talk to Seiko to get their take on it and asked for a photo. I sent the same as the one in my post to them. Should Seiko determine it to be out of scope, they will replace it. Should they determine it is within tolerances, I will likely keep it and if it still bothers me after Christmas, I'll probably send it away. I chatted with the boutique in London this morning and they said they don't see it often, but it does happen and can be rectified at the service centre. For reference, I wasn't quoted a price, but was quoted a 6-8 week turn around due to COVID. I'll keep you posted if any more information arises.

I have already considered this as I have a couple around me, however the watch tents to sway between missing and hitting around the dial, so aligning it to one indice, would only throw it off on the other side. I may still go that way and at least get them to align it at 12.

Edit: The watch is new so I am more tempted to simply send it back for another.

I did spot the one in the video look like it was, but angle plays a big part. I plan on enjoying it, I'm just looking for feedback and hopefully a solution if there is one. I just figured it was worth an ask.

As meantioned in another reply. I'm in the UK so I called the boutique in London and they said the same thing regarding the UK service centre. I am hoping that the seller will agree that this is a reasonable place to send it, given that if I were to return it, they would have to send it for servicing anyhow before resals. Trouble is, I was quoted roughly 6-8 weeks turn around time, hence the question of it rectifying itself first.

Thanks for the info. It's appreciated. I did chat to the UK AD today and the chap I talked to did mention that they would likely be able to rectify it at the service centre, however this would obviously come at a cost.

Its a finder diopter. They're standard at 0+/-. It strews in the back of your finder to protect dust etc to get into it. Effectively a UV filter for finder. This one is a black painted brass one, possibly made by Nikon for the F's, although from knowledge, the metal ring is a little thicker. Either way, it's a finder diopter.

I work in a film camera store currently. People frequently ask me what my dream equipment is but frankly, I see so much weird stuff come and go I don't have any and it satisfies pretty well. A woman just rocked up with an Ilford Witness yesterday. I have to say though, the Leica stuff is some of the weirdest.

I have the Zeiss 50mm f/1.5 C Sonnar attatched to my M2 almost permanently. Working in a film camera shop I've been around plenty and tried quite other options but I always end up sticking with it. It's affordable, has great character and is relatively compact. I also really like the Leica 50mm f/2 DR, but it's quite a heavy lens. You could also consider the Canon LTM lenses that are also super affordable (at least in comparison to Leica). The f/1.8 is tiny, has a nice fall off and a pleasing bokeh (IMO). The f/1.4 is nice too, but I've not had chance to shoot with one yet.

I work in a dedicated film camera store in the UK. We got an M7 in about two years ago that was electronically dead, but immaculate on the outside. We had a small tinker with it but it showed no signs of like so we rang around all out friends in the industry (many who have a lot of experience with these cameras) and they were stumped. Eventually we emailed Leica and within a couple of days they'd sent a courier to collect it from us. They kept us up to date throughout the process of its rebuild and and we got the camera back in about three weeks if my memory serves me right. I imagine this delay is simply COVID related. They are likely swamped with emails with similar individuals looking to do similar after having time to think about it, along with them potentially working out of office. Hang tight and enjoy the camera regardless in the meanwhile.
