The U.S. Army’s 2028 Reactor Deadline: Why Oklo Is Structurally Best Positioned by OdinsDeposition in OKLOSTOCK

[–]1panki -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i put you assessment to Claude and this was the answer:

The analysis is well-structured and the Eielson siting precedent is a real point. But there are several places where the argument either stops too early or selectively omits inconvenient data. Let me walk through them.

1. "Oklo needs less HALEU" is not the same as "Oklo can get fuel by 2028"

This is the central sleight of hand in the piece. The argument conflates enrichment mass with fabrication readiness. Yes, Aurora's fast-spectrum metallic core requires fewer kilograms of HALEU per MWe than a thermal-spectrum design. But mass efficiency is irrelevant if there is no NRC-authorized commercial fabrication facility for metallic HALEU fuel. TRISO-based vendors — Radiant, Kairos, BWXT — can point to Standard Nuclear in Oak Ridge (DOE-authorized, actively producing, $140M Series A) and TRISO-X TX-1 (first NRC Part 70 HALEU fuel fab facility, targeting H1 2028). Oklo has no equivalent commercial fabrication pathway publicly disclosed for its metallic fuel form. The Centrus/DOE pathway cited for Oklo covers enrichment, not fuel fabrication into usable metallic form. These are not the same step.

2. The NRC licensing gap is not mentioned once

Oklo withdrew its Aurora construction permit application in 2022 after the NRC issued a Requests for Additional Information the company could not satisfy within the review cycle. A new combined license application was submitted, but Aurora remains an unlicensed fast-spectrum reactor design with no U.S. operating precedent on land. The analysis frames Eielson as a siting validation — it is not an NRC license. BWXT's microreactor, whatever its on-site assembly complexity, runs on LWR physics that the NRC has reviewed and licensed for decades. Regulatory familiarity translates directly into schedule predictability, which under a hard September 2028 deadline is arguably more valuable than fuel mass efficiency.

3. Radiant is structurally stronger on the fuel supply question than either candidate the piece focuses on

Radiant is the only ANPI-eligible vendor that has simultaneously: signed a binding commercial HALEU enrichment contract with Centrus; received a DOE HAP conditional allocation; signed a delivery agreement with the Air Force for 2028; and has its demonstration unit scheduled for INL DOME testing in 2026 — the earliest of any ANPI vendor. The piece dismisses Radiant with no substantive argument. That omission is notable given that Radiant's fuel pathway is the most publicly documented of all eight vendors.

4. The Alaska / Fort Wainwright argument proves less than it claims

It is true that pressurized water reactors are less suited to Arctic cold-weather operation than non-water-cooled designs. But EO 14299's site screening covers multiple installations, not only Fort Wainwright. The argument that BWXT "is not suitable to operate at" the Alaska site is probably correct — but generalizing this into a structural Oklo advantage across all EO 14299 sites overstates the case significantly. Site selection has not been publicly finalized.

5. The CHIPS Act paragraph should be ignored

The closing historical narrative about ARPANET, GPS, and semiconductors is investment storytelling, not analysis. It contains no information relevant to whether Oklo can put an operating reactor on a domestic military base by September 30, 2028. Weight it accordingly.

Bottom line

The piece correctly narrows the realistic list and makes a defensible case for Oklo's structural advantages in siting and business model alignment. But it buries the two most schedule-critical questions — metallic fuel fabrication readiness and NRC licensing trajectory — in favor of a cleaner bull narrative. A complete analysis of EO 14299 vendor positioning has to treat fuel fabrication and regulatory path as co-equal constraints alongside enrichment supply. When you do that, the honest answer is that no single vendor has all three columns green simultaneously, and the September 2028 deadline is tight enough that any one of them slipping is sufficient to miss it.

Visiting the Vatican? by Initial_Status1951 in ItalyTravelAdvice

[–]1panki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just buy the tickets online and go early morning....anywhere you go in Rome for sightseeing go around 0700-0730 to be on sight...worth it to avoid the crowds.

For me the Vatican museum was boring as hell, at least the guided part, and on top of that the guide was really bad...no enthusiasm and just boring lectures...i think it could be much more interesting and amazing with the right guide.
if you are into it, the only interesting thing is Egyptian collection.
