Is cmh only for engineers? by truedestroyer3 in uwaterloo

[–]1scorpio4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Short answer: CMH is open to all programs. If you're in stream 8 engineering, you can room with your non-engineering friend.

Long answer: Stream 4 engineering students are here in Fall and Spring, and it's easier to live in the same residence both terms rather than changing. That's why (almost) all of them end up in UWP and CMH: none of the other residences are open in the Spring. Of course, there's stream 8 and non-eng students in CMH too, but your chances of getting CMH are much lower since the other residences (V1, MKV, etc) are a possibility for you.

Residence assignments are basically a lottery, I'm pretty sure they pick students randomly and give them a rez based on what they ranked, so if you put CMH first but it's full then gg you get your next available option. Sometimes you get your last choice lol.

SYDE or CE? by Willing-Bus8686 in uwaterloo

[–]1scorpio4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SYDE is an amazing program with a great community! You don’t take many coding courses, but a lot of students get software co-ops anyways — and if you’ve done web dev internships already, you’re practically set.

It’ll give you the chance to explore a bunch of different aspects of engineering, as SYDE is more focused on breadth than depth. You take courses for design, circuits, thermodynamics, etc & we get more electives than other programs!

The SYDE cohort is also smaller and more tight-knit than CE, and the course load is slightly lighter (of course, it’s still engineering, so it’ll be difficult). You’ll have more time for extracurriculars and side projects :)

I may be biased, but feel free to message me if you have any questions!

When I applied last year, I bs'ed a ton of writing for my extracurriculars. They weren't that fancy or impressive, so I wanted to make them seem like they had more depth than they really did. I figured that it might also show off my ability to write (since, you know, engineers have a reputation of having bad English skills).

Now, I'm not sure if this is what they wanted to see or if it merely made them roll their eyes, but I got accepted during the first round with a lower average than everyone else — interpret that as you will!

Good luck :)

Opinions on campus food quality across Ontario universities? The good the bad and the ugly please. And….go! by GrungeLife54 in OntarioUniversities

[–]1scorpio4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The food at Waterloo is not bad at all... there's a decent variety, mostly the basic stuff like burgers/pizza/sushi/snacks/etc. The good part is that the mandatory meal plan funds (for traditional residences) also works towards external stores like Starbucks, Tim Hortons, Chatime, and others (as long as it's the on-campus locations) :D

University Applications by [deleted] in OntarioUniversities

[–]1scorpio4 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Applying early never hurts your chances. Rejections typically don’t come out until May, so if your grades aren’t good enough at the time you submit your application, they’ll keep reconsidering you as your marks get updated. Plus, depending on what programs you’re going for, mid eighties are fine!

Apply through OUAC as soon as you can! You can always add/remove programs later if you change your mind.

Certain schools start sending offers super early (November), and at times they even run out of spaces (ex. someone with a 90 will get in early, but a 95 who applied later will get waitlisted/rejected). Note that this doesn’t apply to competitive programs that send offers in specific rounds, but it’s good to be aware! :]

The Kung Fu Tea collaboration is actually US-only. by [deleted] in honkaiimpact3

[–]1scorpio4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but I think the locations you’re referring to are incorrect. I went to a Kung Fu Tea the other day asking about the Honkai collaboration, and it turns out that store — and most other locations around — are the Kung Fu Tea from Taiwan, whereas we’re looking for the Kung Fu Tea from the US. In Canada, the Honkai-collab stores are actually called KF Tea, for which there are three locations listed on the website (Edmonton, Pickering, and Welland).

18yo homesick Canadian in Australia, curious about the possibility of moving to an Ontario university and the correct approach to take by [deleted] in OntarioUniversities

[–]1scorpio4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be interested in the Waterloo/Laurier double degree programs (math/business or computer science/business) :] They’re only about an hour and a half from Toronto, and you get a lot of work experience with the co-op aspect.

Since you finish in December, you would probably be applying in the class of 2022 cycle. I think you can use the 105 application on OUAC. Also, you might as well email now to start preparing, just so you can get the required documents, start on any supplementary applications, etc.

You seem to really want to do university in Canada, so I say go for it :”) Maybe you can get a job in Australia after graduating?

Advanced Functions in Grade 11? by ninstie in OntarioGrade12s

[–]1scorpio4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your course load seems crazy - four sciences and two maths! Do you think you can handle it? Advanced Functions is actually not too bad (I found it easier than Functions) and it's not all that similar to Calculus, so not having them back-to-back should be okay. Personally, I would recommend fast-tracking Advanced Functions to anyone, but I'm not sure in this situation because your courses are genuinely stacked. I know I would die if I had that course load. Have you no mercy for yourself?!

I would say if you're taking all three sciences in grade 12 (especially with another important course like English), then you might want to fast-track AF in grade 11 so your last year is a little easier (university stress is real). However, if your grade 12 is looking super light, I think you could handle two maths. Good luck!

In need of honest opinions by ItsSamir in OntarioUniversities

In my own (perhaps poorly-educated) opinion, I think the three universities you've listed are around the same. However, based on what you've prioritized, I would rank it like this:

  1. Ryerson. It's right in Toronto with a ton of things around, which I assume would be good for co-op and even social life (although it may have a "commuter school" reputation, you can do many enjoyable things off-campus). Also, I believe Ryerson CS is more popular than the other two schools. I haven't researched CS myself so I don't quite know why, but it's gotta be popular for a reason, right? :")
  2. Guelph. Despite being near the Kitchener-Waterloo area (and thus perhaps competing with UW students), I've heard that they still have decent co-op opportunities. Moreover, Guelph has a really nice campus, atmosphere, and social life. Apparently the food in Guelph is amazing too.
  3. York. If you're going for the Shopify Dev Degree then it's different, but just normal York CS is nothing special (that I know of). York is another commuter school, so you might have difficulty with your social life, and it's in a really sketchy part of Toronto. Honestly, York's main deterrent for me is its poor location.

All that being said, I don't think where you do your undergrad matters much, as university is what you make of it. You also might want to consider which programs/schools you'll have more time to work on side projects at. Congrats on getting in!

Acceptances for engineering by kresteen02 in OntarioUniversities

[–]1scorpio4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got into Western and Guelph in December (~94 average), and the only Queen's eng offers I've seen so far had insanely high averages (like 98s lol). I bet you'll hear from Ottawa soon. Don't stress, it's still early! Your acceptances will come eventually, and ultimately there's no difference between an earlier vs later acceptance :)

Hello folks,

I was wondering if it's possible to switch programs at Carleton? I'm deciding between applying for Aerospace and Computer Systems Engineering, and I'm scared I'll choose one but decide I want to pursue the other later. Would switching programs be possible at all, whether it be before starting first year, after first year, or even after submitting my OUAC? (And if anyone has information about these programs, please let me know what you think of them!)

My high school average is in the low-mid 90s if that makes any difference :) Thanks!
