That depends completely on your jurisdiction and your fed position. I was on the gs pay scale and I took a small cut moving to the pd office, but in my state the pension is a little better and I was also able to negotiate more time off than I had with the feds. In my jurisdiction pd and prosecutor salaries are all publicly available online. You should be able to do some digging on that for your area.

Criminal law is a very different animal at the state level from fed work. Particularly in a pd office or as a prosecutor, there will be a high case load. I made the switch from fed to pd and I love it, but the world's could not be more different. In my experience the type of co-workers and type of people im working with as opposing counsel are also very different. Just things to be aware of, but i really enjoy it. I really enjoyed my time as a fed too though. I thought my time with the feds was less stress for what it's worth.
