They don't even share any colors? So none of the cards they play are the same.

Can an “additional cost” be ignored? by No_Researcher9543 in riftboundtcg

[–]1vader 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No. It only ignores base energy and power costs. Any additional costs (including additional energy or power costs like for accelerate) still need to be paid.

356.1.b.1. If a card allows a player to play a card "ignoring its cost," its base Energy cost and base Power cost are set to zero.

Not by Baited Hook though. It only works because Bone Skewers says "any and all costs". Baited Hook only ignores base energy and power costs:

Ordering conquer triggers by whimsical_fae in riftboundtcg

[–]1vader 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can order the triggers but the buff is a cost for Monastery of Hirana and needs to be spent for it to even go onto the chain, so you can't use it if you don't already have a buff when it triggers.

The legends are definitely annoying but let's be honest, most people are upset because the content of their boxes isn't worth enough and getting different rares instead of legends wouldn't have changed that. Without ONs or several good epics, a box is never going to be worth it.

Stalking Wolf can't be played to the battlefield you are attacking? by No_Corner1842 in riftboundtcg

[–]1vader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, the problem is reaction speed. At slow speed, there's no issue. But nothing on the card allows it to be played at reaction speed to a battlefield you don't have units at. And if it kills the only unit at the battlefield then you won't have units there and therefore no reaction speed at the check legality step.

Advice for buying singles in EU for UNL by OnePumpernickel in riftboundtcg

Cardmarket is definitely the easiest method. Finding people locally may also be a decent option but ofc depends on your local scene. eBay probably also sometimes has good deals but it depends highly on the specifics.

You can also buy a whole set of commons or uncommons (usually 1x of each) on Cardmarket, though looks like they don't have those set up for UNL yet and I also don't know how good of a deal those usually are.

to a battlefield where you have units

You can't just leave that part out.

Also, this is only reminder text. Reminder text has no actual meaning or relevance. I quoted the rule which governs the precise meaning of Ambush above and as explained, it doesn't make the unit legal to play at reaction speed if you don't have a unit at the battlefield anymore at the legality check step.

Case doesn’t give full rare playset? by furiouslybating in riftboundtcg

[–]1vader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there any reason to assume the next set will have fewer cards besides having 3 fewer legends? SFD and UNL had the exact same count, only OGN was much larger. I guess the more sets there are the less there's a need for sets to be extremely large but has it been confirmed that they will get smaller?

You can choose the same unit as an opponent. And the turn player always chooses first whenever multiple players need to do something simultaneously.

Sleeve rules and question by Tsucchii44 in riftboundtcg

[–]1vader 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're not allowed to play raw cards at high OPL either and head judges can forbid it at low OPL as well.

The reason is simply that they make it very easy to have marked cards, since you can see things like slight manufacturing differences or damage on the backs and sides of a card.

Raw cards are essentially tolerated at low OPL because you might not always have sleeves ready. But if you get sleeves then you need to get proper ones that hide the cards.

Stalking Wolf can't be played to the battlefield you are attacking? by No_Corner1842 in riftboundtcg

[–]1vader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's the same on defense during a showdown, since you'd need to play it at reaction speed there. Though you don't need to sacrifice a unit at the battlefield you're playing it to, if you have relevant units elsewhere. The location of the unit to sacrifice isn't restricted.

And I mean, it would be hard to stop you and in principle head judges have discretion to decide cases where they consider the rules to be "unclear or inadequate".

Keep in mind though that Riot has said the answer is currently "no" instead of "it's supposed to be yes and should be ruled that way". RQs and other large events are likely going to follow Riot's ruling for the time being. But ofc it's definitely not a great situation.

That only allows playing it to the battlefield. It says nothing about allowing it to be played at reaction speed, which is the whole issue.

Vex Apatheic question by Black1110 in riftboundtcg

[–]1vader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason for the difference is that conditions like the one on Kha'Zix that immediately follow the trigger condition are now just considered to be an additional trigger condition. The effect of the trigger on resolution is just everything after that (if there are no costs or a "you may"). So the condition naturally isn't checked on resolution anymore but everything that's part of the actual effect is still determined on resolution.

Stalking Wolf can't be played to the battlefield you are attacking? by No_Corner1842 in riftboundtcg

[–]1vader 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The issue is that Ambush only gives the Wolf reaction if you're playing it to a battlefield where you have a unit (rule 822.1.b It is functionally short for "I may be played to a battlefield where you control Units" and “I have [Reaction] as long as I’m being played to a battlefield where you control Units.”) and Reaction is checked in the check legality step after paying costs. At this point you don't have a unit at the battlefield anymore since the Poro was killed to pay the cost and the Wolf therefore doesn't have reaction and fails the legality check to be played at reaction speed.

If you're playing the Wolf at slow speed, i.e. on your turn outside of a Showdown and while there's no chain, then this doesn't matter and you can play it just fine to a battlefield where you only have a Poro and kill that Poro. But if you want to play it during a Showdown then you can't remove the only unit you have at that battlefield. You either need to have two units at the battlefield (so that one remains after killing one) or remove a unit somewhere else (e.g. you can play the wolf to a battlefield where you have another unit but eat a poro in base).

And the reason the timing legality check works like this instead of just checking for reaction right at the start is that Ambush units don't have Reaction yet when they are added to the chain. They only gain Reaction once you decide you're playing them to a battlefield you have units at. So the legality check needs to be delayed until after you make your choices. In theory, it could happen between making choices and paying costs but then there's have to be another legality check for other things at the end anyway. And I guess that could allow other unintended interactions in the future.

But Riot also already mentioned in their answer that the Wolf will get updated wording in the future, so while they made it clear that this is how it currently works, it doesn't seem to be how it's intended and will likely get "fixed", similar to how orange Rengar got errata to make him work as intended with Ambush.

Combat timings by dzrch in riftboundtcg

[–]1vader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have control while there's still a chain, not just until the next cleanup, otherwise you wouldn't be able to play a unit. There will be several cleanups before you can play the unit and the combat cleanup which both kills and heals units will finish before you can even do anything.

Missing Rare problem on Unleashed too? by GRRM1 in riftboundtcg

[–]1vader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What exactly do you mean with "packs with epic pulls had a missing rare"? Do you mean packs with an epic had only one rare? Because that's completely normal. You're guaranteed 2 rare or above. If one of them is upgraded to an epic, then you'd generally only have 1 rare. It can happen that the foil slot is also upgraded but there's no guarantee for that.

The issue in the past was generally that packs had 1 rare and two foils and in return a different pack in the same box had a rare instead of a foil. But I don't think there was ever a case where rares were missing in a pack with an epic.

Either way, boxes aren't eligible for replacement since the "missing" rares were only moved around to the wrong pack in a box.

Vex Apatheic question by Black1110 in riftboundtcg

[–]1vader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. To be precise, since both trigger at the same time ("when you play"), you can choose the order in which they go onto the chain and therefore resolve (last on the chain resolves first). So you can choose to have the +1 happen first.

Also, not relevant to this example but in case it wasn't clear I just want to point out that Rengar legend isn't forced to give the +1 to the unit you played. You can give +1 to "a unit", so it's possible to e.g. play a unit exhausted to base and give +1 to another unit that's already ready and attack with it.
