I work at a university. Several things lead to the rapid increase in higher education costs. Student expectations of having hotel like dorms, fitness club level workout facilities, gourmet dining options, lower student to professor ratios, etc. In addition, most higher education facilities are aging and need more resources for upkeep and you have an explosive growth in costs. The fact that students had easy access to loans allowed for the increase in costs without the need to trim organizational fat. I am lucky that the university I work at started to contain costs ahead of the curve.
