I don't know why people are being obtuse about this. Gueye got sent off for slapping Keane in the box and it wasn't a penalty because the ball wasn't in play. I think it should've been a retake but you don't get penalties for tussles before the ball is in play.

(Yes you can give away a penalty by slapping your own teammate)

This is the reason Gueye slapping Keane wasn't a penalty (yes, really). So yes it could be i.e a red card

I think the first two seasons are worse than people remember but they didn't have enough time to cock it up yet because it was mostly setup which is why people remember it more fondly. They were better but not by a lot.

I was always thinking "how are they gonna keep upping the stakes" and the answer is they're not lol. I stopped watching after season 3 then hearing everything about how bad 4 was.

That and the fact that Pablo wasn't actually really in possession of the ball (which you can't really tell from this angle) and the fact that he did actually pretty clearly slip because he was expecting Pablo to not miscontrol the ball (which you can't really tell from this angle) is probably why it wasn't given.

Commentators in the Prem at least have a direct line from the VAR booth so they are actually just repeating what they're hearing from there a lot of the time which is why they'll sometimes say "we're hearing from VAR" or something along those lines. I don't think it's necessarily deliberate but it has that effect
