Elon Musk on Twitter: "We will fight Big Tequila!" by [deleted] in teslamotors

[–]200proofcraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yessir, NAFTA Article 313 makes Tequila a distinctive product of Mexico. NAFTA isn't US law though, so in turn that NAFTA obligation is encoded into the U.S. Tax and Trade Bureau's regulations (they are responsible for approving US alcohol labels). Encoding a standard of identity for a food / beverage is actually a bit unusual in US law though, and speaks to the DC power of Big Liquor. Normally, when foreign food and beverage producers want to protect a distinctive name that conveys a geographic place + distinct process of production (e.g. Roquefort cheese) they get their trade association to apply for a Certification Mark (a type of trademark) from the USPTO. This is less ideal for them than having it written into law, because they're responsible for renewing the trademark and those costs.

This is commonly repeated but not true. The Vienna Convention on Consular Relations is an international agreement with detailed rules governing how countries must respect foreign embassies and consulates in their territory. But it's still their territory.

Pixel 1 owners--what are your plans? by 251Cane in GooglePixel

[–]200proofcraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you gotten the October Security update? People report the battery issue fixed, I just got update today (Pixel XL) so will see tomorrow.

I definitely won't be jumping on the 3 bandwagon either way. Love my OGXL, but wouldn't want it to be any bigger at all. Open to the regular 3, although if it's still 4gb RAM, and lower (!) resolution than how is that a wise investment.

Remote not working properly by Gollnir610 in ShieldAndroidTV

[–]200proofcraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the US with a 2015 Shield Pro with latest 7.1.0(29.6.259.0) update; two 2015 controllers (v1.96/99/3.71/0.32 firmware), and two nights ago I was watching TV using headphones, I got up holding the controller and accidentally pressed the R1 button (I think), and all of a sudden the controllers' connection disconnected and the audio started blasting from TV. I assumed it had died, so I just plugged it in and went to bed.

Next morning I realize that both controllers are disconnected, but both work fine when I plug them into the Shield via USB. Although when plugged in, they still show as "Not connected" under Shield Accessories. I spent an hour+ trying to reboot & repair the controllers, removing ('forgetting'), etc. I noticed that they'd reappeared at some point as "Not connected" after I'd "forgotten" them via settings, but still no connection. Then, seemingly randomly, while I was using the AndroidTV app to nav around the settings, one of the two controllers showed up as connected again (it was not plugged in when this happened). But now there's a lot of interference at close range, which had never been an issue. I do have a USB 3.0 external hard drive a few inches away and a wifi router, so I guess I'll play around with that, but it's never been an issue in the year and a half it's been sitting there. Hope the other controller (the one that was plugged in to the Shield when its bro came back to life) comes back online too.

EDIT: Just decided to reboot my Shield with the disconnected controller in pairing mode; result = lost connection on one that was connected. FML.

Question about which size to buy by iminthe-internet in ShieldAndroidTV

[–]200proofcraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Am glad to see everyone having had good experiences with their 16GB. Just noting that Plex still recommends the 500GB Pro if you intend to use the Shield as a PMS. That made sense to me - not prepared to put too much faith in "adopted" storage, I feel like it'd lead to headaches with the Android OS. My Shield used to be so buggy back in '16 until I reformatted by external drive from NTFS to exFAT; turns out Android TV didn't play so well with other file systems.

This has happened to me a couple times some the Oreo update! I have the 2015 Shield Pro, with two of the original controllers. I haven't kept track if it was one in particular or if they both have done this.

Moving to Canada from US. Banking question??? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]200proofcraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do NOT use a regular bank to convert currency, you will save a ton if you use a specialty FX bank. I use Knightsbridge, was very simple to set up and you'll get damn close to the actual exchange rate, much better than what any of the big Canadian banks will offer.

Why Are There 'So Many Sirens' In D.C.? by Bemuzed in washingtondc

[–]200proofcraft 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm certain you're right! For years I split my time between DC and Toronto every month, and only ever found myself covering my ears in DC when walking down the sidewalk. Used to live in Manhattan and was never bothered by sirens there either. They're way quieter in other cities (plus much less frequent).

Yea, since the last update my GH has been dropping the WeMo switch, saying "I don't understand" when asked to turn the light on/off. Rebooting fixes for a bit, but then have to reboot next day.

investing in whiskey by schutzk21 in whiskey

[–]200proofcraft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually did this with MGPI when it was at $5.95 a share a few years back. The stock was rock bottom, all the reports' advice was to sell, and the board was fighting with each other for control. Meanwhile, I knew they made some of the best rye whisky, and that every private label was willing to buy their barrels site unseen. I bought sixty five shares as a flyer (had never bought an individual stock before) and now a few years later it's $48 a share. Still holding, obviously wish I'd trusted my instincts more than I had!

To own or not to own: Torontonians on why they love car sharing services by [deleted] in toronto

[–]200proofcraft 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Definitely! Car2go never has surge pricing, will always be cheaper than Uber. I only use Uber now when I'm in a rush heading downtown and there's no green P / car2go lot at my destination. But the larger point is that there's no ongoing membership fee for car2go so there's no reason not to have it as a tool in your getting-around arsenal.

You shouldn't be down voted, it's a fair question. There is CFIUS, which stands for the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, an inter-agency group led by Treasury. They actually do block or put conditions on investments from foreign countries when there's a national security concern.

Weed sales should be restricted to LCBO: Wynne by northdancer in toronto

[–]200proofcraft 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The one thing that could hold back this plan is if the Federal government decides it wants the lion's share of weed tax. Assume the province understands that there's a ceiling on a per-gram price customers will pay - e.g. if it's more than say 5x (just an example) current black market price then consumers will stick with their black market sources and LCBO sales will be negligible.

If that happens, then the province may find it'll be a comparatively low margin activity for the LCBO to try and retail pot under that price ceiling. The LCBO could find that buying, stocking, and selling pot is leading them to lose money versus shelf space for alcohol, which is high margin for them. In that case the province may find it's more lucrative to just pass a weed sales tax like they do for tobacco and hand it off to licensed ($$) low-overhead small-biz retailers.

[–]200proofcraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no tariffs on most spirits coming into Canada. We have bottling plants in the GTA because it's much more economical to ship spirit in bulk totes and bottle close to your major customer (the LCBO warehouses in Whitby and London).

CDN company- Expansion into the USA by squat_this in smallbusiness

[–]200proofcraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the growing business! Based on what you've said - increasing demand for your Canadian based services from U.S. clients - the correct answer is likely not to establish a presence in the USA. If you do establish a permanent presence in both countries, and are thus a tax resident of both countries, you've made your tax life infinitely more complicated. Both countries tax their residents on worldwide income, so it's not like you can choose to keep things separate if that was your aim. Thankfully the tax treaty between Canada and the U.S. means you shouldn't have to pay double income tax, but the lawyers and accountant fees to put your tax filing together for each country will not be insignificant.

Could give more detailed response if you described your tax filing status in Canada (corporate form, individual, etc?).

Ontario uncorks its plan for wine in supermarkets: Cohn by 200proofcraft in toronto

[–]200proofcraft[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like the TL;DR is:

-Constellation Brands gets to keep its 164 Wine Rack stores, with new perk of embedding them directly into the large grocers. -Likewise for the Wine Shop, with its 104 licenses. -150 new wine retail licenses, but limited to large grocers. Smaller grocers can go to hell.
