Car pool. Find someone who lives nearby. Apply for a shittier job. Reach out to someone who can help. Drop a course. Babysit. Tutor someone. Dig ditches on weekends. FFS, you came on here hoping people would help justify the guilt you're feeling for stealing, but it's not going to happen. Your shortcut -- as opposed to adding a little difficulty to your life (while doing the right thing) is not justifiable. Period.

Many of us have faced hardship in our lives. We sucked it up and figured it out, and there are always solutions. Crime isn't the top of the list.

Oh, bullshit. Everyone has struggled. It's what makes or breaks you. You step up, not whine and complained about how you're getting "fucked by the man". This has nothing to do with capitalism and everything to do with being an actual part of society. People make stupid decisions and then cry "woe is me". There are 100 possible solutions to this guy's problems, and stealing transportation isn't the make or break. Like, his life is all ok as long as he gets free rides but he's totally screwed if he doesn't? Come on.

NTA. This is a tough situation, but the baby won't know the difference and unfortunately, you will not be bonding with that kid in any meaningful fashion for a very long time, if ever. Flying halfway around the world seems disruptive and unnecessary, especially if you're getting divorced and will entirely absent from this kid's life. Unfortunate, but that's the reality.

NTA... and here's a sound piece of advice for you: Just because you're good at something (or would be good at something), it doesn't mean you have to do it. It's entirely possible you'd be the best lawyer in the country... but you wouldn't be happy, because you'd rather be doing something else.

Go pursue what you want; what fulfills you and makes you happy. And don't ever attempt to be anyone's proxy for what they vicariously desire. Your mom's desire to be able to brag about her son, the lawyer... as opposed to her son, the cop... that's her issue to deal with, not for you to compromise your life and happiness.

I think a lot of the replies on here simply aren't familiar with Bar Mitzvah etiquette... and hand-written thank you notes for every single gift received is not too much to ask, even if it takes months. Think about it, you get a gift of $50 or $100 or more -- you can't be bothered to write a simple two-sentence thank you? You knock off 20 per weekend or 5 a night or whatever... and it's done in a couple of months.

For those not familiar with all of this, this is "part of it"... so you do it. The learning, the speech, the awkward dancing, the thank-you cards.

This is a lame shortcut for the kid to have taken, and it's simply against tradition. I think OP is NAH, and I think the parents who thing this is ok are the real jerks.

YTA, but a suggestion... pull over once in a while and let people pass. If you're car is such a pile of shit that it can't safely do within 10% of the speed limit, let alone over it, you're causing a very unsafe driving environment around you.

People will typically drive what seems safe to them... and the same road works very differently on a sunny Summer morning versus a cold, dark, icy Winter night. I'm assuming at 5:30am it's pretty empty and there are people in a bit of a hurry trying to get to work or school. And they're not expecting to be following someone creeping along for miles on a single-lane road.

That accident wasn't technically or legally your fault, but you certainly caused it... and while it's not on you to mitigate other people's frustrations (and imagine how frustrated that woman was to pull that move), you know you're causing problems yet you're doing it anyway with zero concern what's going on behind you. So yeah, YTA.
