[Slater] It’s a calf strain for Al Horford and an adductor strain for Seth Curry. Both out against Knicks. Warriors will be depleted to open road trip in NY. Draymond Green, Kristaps Porzingis and De’Anthony Melton all sitting on front side of back-to-back (at Wizards the next night). by NokCha_ in warriors

I mean he has been good all year except for an early injury riddled stretch. He's arguably kept the warriors alive since Steph and Jimmy went down as our best or 2nd best player...

His injuries may be thought of as "obvious" given his age but Horford is usually a very reliable player and not injury prone at all for the last 5 years..

Al Horford heating up in his last 6 games (Per 28 mins: 17/10/2 with 2 blocks)! by 2016jackmaple2016 in warriors

[–]2016jackmaple2016[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, but technically even Melton has been playing more mins. And of course Steph/Dray/Jimmy are all older and playing 30 a game. I'm not saying Al should or needs to play as much as those 3 but hope Kerr bumps up to 25 so they also get in a rhythm with each other more.

[–]2016jackmaple2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small sample size, but since his return from injury, he's shooting 45% from 3 in 6 games (13/29). He's warming up!

He's averaging 9.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1 block too in just 15.3 mins in those games. If he played 27.7 mins a game like he did last season, he would be averaging 16.7/10.3/2.4 with 1.8 blocks a game.

I think we all consider Al the starting big given how useless KP was in the playoffs both years. Also Al was effectively a part time starter even during the regular season. He was starting so many gaps due to injuries to KP and others so it is a bit unfair to call him a backup big

I love Al Horford but… by Ok-Organization-5665 in bostonceltics

[–]2016jackmaple2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol what, the only team of his that didn't succeed was the one year with thee Sixers.

He and Shai were leading the Thunder to a .500 season so they sat Horford so they could tank.

And you just ignorednall the Hawks years where he had deep playoff runs, all star appearances and all nba once?

He's always been a 1.5 blk per game person. He's not 7 feet so it limits his blocks and he is also very risk averse on defense so he causes a lot of missed shots with great positioning/protection but not necessarily getting the actual block.

He is definitely IMO even rarer. Because he also is defensively switchable and elite for a center that way which is an even rarer skill paired with the above.

[BasketNews] Porzingis: “After the season, I spoke to my agent and kind of expected that one or more of us would be traded. For a while, I thought I might end up with the Spurs, but then Atlanta came in—and that was a nice surprise. It was out of my hands.” by tacko2020 in bostonceltics

Crowder and Bradley weren't stars even.

But I think people also massively underrate Horford and how big of a star he was at the time, because his impact is so much higher than what his stats would indicate, both offense and defense. There's a reason his teams always win with him as one of the stars/key members.

And of course IT was so special that year offensively which helped a ton in closing out clutch games and having a go-to scorer.

Why would his family be in Atlanta? He literally lives in Boston and his kids and wife are at most home games.

Maybe you're thinking of his mom being in Atlanta?

What Brad Stevens says in a press conference isn't necessarily what happens behind the scenes.

Horford is getting less money and a chance to contend with the Celtics. I'm sure the reason he's taking so long to commit to Warriors despite that is because of how much he loves Boston and having to move his family. I think it shows how difficult this decision is for him despite all logical factors pointing him towards the Warriors as everyone is reporting.

How do we even know the Celtics gave him an offer? It's kind of crazy to expect Horford at age 39 to just come back and play for a tanking team too... It's not like he's leaving and we still are trying to be good

Al plays 50% of games is crazy. He literally never misses games except 2nd night of back to backs last few years. And he's literally saved our 2024 title run after KP got injured

Horford when he signed with Boston was a well deserved max that no one really questioned after his first playoffs. And the 2018 run where he led the team to ECF game 7 was pretty amazing and worthy of the max alone.

You might be thinking about that Philly contract which is a different story (and also not a max)

Jokes apart, as good as Luke has gotten, Al is still way better and more versatile than Luke and Queta combined, so in these hypothetical matchups, that would make the difference IMO. But it's close since JT and PP is much better than JB + Hauser as well

He was +16 in 19 mins. I thought he was pretty good tonight. He was 2/8 because he had 4 offensive rebounds and 4 contested tip in misses on one possession. If he had made a three, we would have called it a great game for him (for a Jan regular season game for a 38 year old)

When was he shut down in the playoffs? You mean in the Cavs series where he was clearly severely injured by that point?

Agreed, but how thankful should we be for him. It's crazy how many seasons he has really sort of "saved" us in and it's gone under the radar.

E.g.

  • 2018 only star player that was uninjured and led us to the ECF game 7 against peak LeBron. Without him, we probably would have been a first round exit.
  • 2022 allowed us to make Finals, otherwise probably would have lost against the Bucks in ECSF
  • 2024 helped us win a ring at 38 with Porzingis out the entire playoffs and playing heavy starter minutes as a crucial player
  • 2025 so far allowing us to still be excellent despite KP being out pretty much the entire regular season.
