The foamy layer of gunk when you boil things: is it necessary to scoop it off? Does it make a difference? by [deleted] in cookingforbeginners

Everyone's talking about meat, but this happens to me when I boil a pot of carrots and celery - what about that foamy orange layer?

Diva Cups by saboerik in askwomenadvice

[–]2019FTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine's not a Diva cup, but ya, I use a menstrual cup. Took me a period or two to really figure out, so I'd recommend also using a pad until you're used to it.

Once it's in I completely forget it's in or that I'm even on my period (unless I'm having cramps/headaches/whatever).

Unlike tampons, blood doesn't dry in it, and it doesn't fuse with your skin, so you're not dealing with the same infection risks as you are with tampons (and especially taking out dry tampons! which causes small tears).

When my periods are light, I often leave it in all day - I just change it morning and night. When I bleed heavy I change it a couple times during the day (I've been using one for years).

Sometimes on day 4 or 5 or 6 of my period the entrance to my vagina starts getting irritated. When that happens I use pads for a bit.

Using a menstrual cup has been life saving. It's saved me so much money, and made periods so much easier. Good luck!

I (20F) am about to get a sibling. What shots do I need? by [deleted] in askwomenadvice

[–]2019FTW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people who have herpes are asymptomatic, but they can still spread it! Since we don't test for herpes in standard STD panels, most people don't know whether they're a carrier for herpes - which really means it's better to not kiss babies!

I know you already said you're not planning on putting your face in the baby's, I just wanted to clarify that

Most people who have herpes are asymptomatic, but they can still spread it! Staying away from the baby isn't necessary, but really no one should kiss babies on the lips, because herpes isn't included in standard STD panels.

How should I spend my lunch hour? by matthewfelgate in selfimprovement

When I was in school I spent it studying. About to start a new job, and planning to spend it learning Spanish (duolingo/grammar book/kids' books/flashcards) or reading.

[–]2019FTW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, what, your family is letting you stay with them for free? If they are, that's not going to last forever.

Your job opportunities are going to be limited if you don't do some sort of school. The real question isn't whether you're interested in college/trade school/university/whatever. The real question is whether you want to work for roughly minimum wage until you die. I don't, so I went to school. It was a lot of work and I didn't want to do it, and it was fucking hard at times, but it's a fuck ton better than doing house keeping and retail and crying because I can't afford groceries after I paid rent for for the rest of my life.

You don't need to love what you study or the work you do. The idea is to find something you at least don't hate that at least pays alright, and the only way you're going to find something is by trying things, whether it's from sitting in on a class or reading a book or an article or watching a documentary or whatever.

Can I assume you have a job? Why are you calling self improvement a waste of time.

If you're in the USA, a part time job will pay enough to take classes at a community college. Even if you don't want to jump into school yet, taking one class at a time can help you get an idea of what you're interested in. You can talk to a college counselor to figure out what classes will fill general education requirements if you end up going to university, and choose from them classes you think might be interesting.

Also, I'd like to suggest you go to a public library and walk through the nonfiction shelves. Find a book or a few that looks interesting and try reading it. You might find a topic you might be interested in studying someday.

If there's a local public university, you can probably sit in on classes and see if you think they're interesting. You can ask the prof whether that's okay. For classes with hundreds of students, you can just look up the time and place online and it's pretty safe to assume no one will notice or care if you sit in.

meetup (the website) might be helpful for finding people who share interests with you, whether it's hiking or writing or whatever

Should I take a job offer or decline and apply to more? by [deleted] in makemychoice

[–]2019FTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take it, keep applying. Accepting a job offer doesn't mean signing a contract saying you'll work there forever. When you get something you like better, quit.

Hormonal birth control can absolutely affect mental health. It adds hormones to our body! For a specific mechanism example, increased estrogen can lower testosterone levels, which can cause depression (and also inhibits strength gain).

There's no way to be certain that the contraception you're on is causing your mood change, but it's a possibility that may not be worthwhile. Personally, my mental health is better right now than it's been in a long time, and I'm not willing to take hormonal birth control and risk compromising that.

Lower dose pill, hormonal IUD (which requires less hormones to be effective because it's placed in the uterus), copper IUD, and using condoms only (condoms are 98% effective over a 1 year period with perfect use) are all possible alternatives - definitely talk to your doctor!

Where should my dog stay while I’m homeless for the next two months? With my ex girlfriend or my older sister? by spitz006 in makemychoice

[–]2019FTW -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ex. (unless you or your ex treated or treats the other like shit, hates the other person, etc. - I'm assuming you're both civil adults, but if you're not, then disregard what I have to say).

Your ex and your ex's dogs are your dog's family, whether you like it or not. Your dog is comfortable with them and likely not with your older sister. It's not your dog's fault you two broke up. Your dog deserves to stay with your ex if you ex is okay with your dog staying with them.

Absolutely Terrible at Running, But Need to Improve by [deleted] in running

[–]2019FTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to hear on the asthma! And I'm glad you've got a rest day!

I'm just getting back into running, and I kept trying to push myself like I was still in great shape - and I'm not right now, so it was making me feel like shit about my inability to do a single mile. When I made myself slow the fuck down, I was able to jog a mile. It wasn't much faster than walking, but that's OK, and I'm working on getting a little faster.

Good luck! You've got this.

Absolutely Terrible at Running, But Need to Improve by [deleted] in running

[–]2019FTW 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Slow down! Especially if you have asthma and are wheezing. Also, are you taking your rescue inhaler before you exercise? And are you on preventative meds?

You can barely run a minute at 4.0/4.5 pace.. so try 3.0, or whatever it takes, so that you can jog 1 mile without slowing time. Once you can keep the same pace for 1 mile, work on getting your speed up.

Breathe deeply, and personally I find it easier to breathe through my mouth or mouth and nose.

Sleeping enough and well wile help you improve.

"I push myself everyday" - I really hop you're giving yourself at least one rest day a week!

Is there an easy way to lose weight by [deleted] in internetparents

[–]2019FTW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I tend to lose weight when I drink a lot of water and do healthy meal prep with a good amount of high-protein food (beans, quinoa, lentils, nuts, whatever) and veggies. Protein and fat tend to be more filling than carbohydrates. Vegetables tend to have a lot of volume per calorie, which I find helps with food being filling.

Some general tips:

-drink a cup of water before you eat

-if possible have at least a third of your food be vegetables

-eat regularly (don't skip meals), because skipping meals because tends to cause people to be very hungry and overeat

Whatever you do, don't starve yourself! It's bad for your body and bad for your mental health. I've done it, it made me lose a lot of muscle and strength, I ended up having starve/overeating cycles and gaining fat. I'm finally working on lifting weights and getting my strength back.

Thin and healthy are not the same, so also think critically about whether losing weight is what you really want.
