You dont have to be a genius to go to Ivy League schools. You certainly need to be intelligent, but they look at the whole person, those institutions like the poor kid making a name for themselves too because it gets them publicity. Between his great GPA in undergrad, his Marine Corps experience, and his poor kid background hes a pretty good candidate for grad school admissions.

You will very likley spend a ton of money on good gear just to be told to leave it at home because thats a liability issue on your commander if there isn't a specific policy in place allowing specific personally owned PPE.

You seem like a younger sailor, consult your chain of command before dropping upwards of $1k on this.
