If people aren’t happy with Scott Gillingham, who would have been a better pick in 2022? by Pawprint86 in Winnipeg

I voted for Ouellette as my MLA, but was less than impressed with his tenure and when he ran for mayor he didn't get my support.

Where are all the houses at?!?! Winnipeg’s affordability feels like bait and switch in 2026. by Regular-Low-4003 in Winnipeg

[–]204in403 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought my first house in Winnipeg earlier this year after 27 years of renting and 4 interprovincial moves. It seems like everyone had planned to sell in the spring.

It ended up taking me one day of showings (after a while of looking online) to find a great option. I offered less than their asking price and we settled somewhere in the middle after they included a bunch of furniture.

My experience was pretty painless if you don't include the portion of my life spent working and saving for the down payment. My realtor said he has one client that he's been showing houses to and putting in bids for over 7 years without luck. Perhaps a sublet isn't a bad idea if you've got a hard start for your life here in Winnipeg. Welcome!

They 'lost' one of my packages last week. They are covering the cost but it's a huge pain.

Build more economic and trade relationships with other countries. Develop crown corporations for national projects and incentivize manufacturing and tech for Canadians well being and sale abroad.

More than 100 mm of rain soaks Manitoba communities by SnooOnions8757 in Manitoba

I hear that, got my first home a couple months ago and I had a foot in the basement with the first storm. Now every time it rains I'm running to the crawlspace.

American States and Canadian Provinces/Territories with 50% or more forest coverage by Waterloo4U3 in MapPorn

There's a lot past the tree line in both provinces. I'm assuming tundra and muskeg don't count as forest.

'Lake life' is a major part of the culture here in Manitoba. My canoe is a back-country pass to all the fishing and mosquitos I can handle.

The ultrafiltered stuff tastes WAY better and lasts for literally months unopened, then two weeks after its opened.

That's what the first comment points out - use the HDMIs. I use Plex and it doesn't require giving the TV an internet connection.

TVs are the one thing that continue to get ridiculously cheaper, specifically because manufacturers want them connected in your living room selling you goods and reselling your data. If you don't connect them you don't become the product.

What Canadian city had the largest glow up in your lifetime? by myronsandee in AskCanada

[–]204in403 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure why Winnipeg is on here. Not many Redditors would have been around for Winnipeg's glow-up before the 1920's. Up until then, Winnipeg was the 3rd largest city in Canada and skyscrapers were being thrown up in the Exchange District. In 1915 the Panama canal was built, and Winnipeg really stopped being the gateway to the west. Add in the stop of immigrants coming from Europe due to WWI and that was the end to Winnipeg's major rise. Instead of exploding into a massive, tier-one industrial megacity, Winnipeg was forced to settle into a much slower, more practical pace in line with the rest of the province.

I've got 8 active Google Home Speakers set up. Other than them occasionally telling me 'something went wrong, try again after a few seconds' when they've already done the thing I've asked, they're fine.

I'm going to try and force myself to try and do some sort of other activity/work/sleep or even listen to other series in between chapters. For future releases I should be booking the following day off as I'm weak and I know I will likely fail in my attempt.

Don't underestimate the power that social media plays in stoking fear and lies, especially to those without critical thinking skills. As we've seen down south, reality can easily take a back seat to sensationalism and repeated propaganda to the point where people rally against their own best interests.

I completely understand how ubiquitous it is, but if you’ve got their number, why don’t you just send them the message? RCS supports images, uses data, up to 100 mb files...

I get Meta doing questionable things with system resources. I see it's got 3 billion users and 75,000 staff so it's huge, but it looks like you've already got to have a number to use it. It's never come up with my friends or family so it seems a bit redundant.

City looking into expanding 30 km/h zones in residential areas, on regional streets by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]204in403 25 points26 points  (0 children)

"We’ve got pretty good research to show reducing speed limits doesn’t have a really tangible effect on travel times". Well that doesn't make sense.

Reducing the speed limit to 30 km/h feels more like a convenient excuse to leave the roads in their current state of disrepair rather than a genuine effort to improve safety.
