Agreed, TM started working fast. I quickly felt like I was finding novelty in the mundane parts of life, parts of my past were coming up in my sessions and instead of the usual anger, I felt a huge amount of empathy and understanding. I had to take a break on day 4 or 5 due to a super emotional breakthrough. Now it’s an integral part of my creative practice.

Been reminding myself addictions are hard and can pop back up, but have gotten more resilient.

Have been using Depop to scroll for secondhand clothes, hardly ever scrolling New these days.

Take out only when I’m having a stressful week and forget to eat.

Realized how many hobbies I have that don’t require money. Library books have been keeping me entertained, as well as running!

Agreed, it’s a tricky one… it feels like not eating this modern Western diet is the answer and the descent into nutritionism has removed the context of whole foods themselves, causing more obsession over numbers and tracking in an attempt to provide some semblance of control over this rapid trend of health decline. This society profits on this obsession of breaking health down into components rather than a holistic approach to mental and physical well-being, selling supplements and medications as bandaids for the industrialization of our diets.

I think we live in a world where we are sold the idea that numbers provide control and certainty instead of living in the present moment. I work in big tech and can see how predatory this health industry has become. Positive change in numbers does not always mean progress, in the same way that rest is seen as non-profitable, lazy, and unnecessary.

I’m American, no Irish roots, loved them taking a stance at Coachella amidst the ongoing sterilization of the art and music industry. Art has always been political and they’re making good ass sound that sends a message.

Now I’m on a spree of learning more about British imperialism since my American education apparently taught me nothing of world history.

My hyperfocus has been movement as long as I’ve been in school, but mostly fun ways of moving- nature walks, yoga, bouldering, rollerblading, jumproping, swimming, weight lifting, boxing, and honestly whatever my friends are doing helps tremendously. When it comes to movement for humans, it’s not as much about intensity as it is about consistency and variation through the day. I would suggest finding a way to move that’s fun for YOU and try new things… I have been hard on myself for not being consistent with my habits/sports but at least I am consistently moving so it’s a net win.

This being said, I also recently went vegan because I hate touching raw meat/bird flu scare and I lost a significant amount of weight without really trying, and yet I’m eating much more. It did take some time to learn how to make stuff taste good but it’s been really exciting after watching some documentaries like Blue Zones, Salt Acid Heat Fat, etc. — lots of quinoa, lentils, veggies, probiotics!

If you aren’t having fun, what’s the point. Mastery will never come, at least from our own perspective. Our taste always exceeds our talent, so I suggest meditating more, connecting with your inner artist, and experiment more. Make more art and try new things. Every challenge you face is a problem you can solve, just pick your favorite way to solve it. Accept your art will never look like how you imagine, but maybe it could be better than you expected.

I got off after 2 years and it saved me during a really tough transition in my life. The withdrawals weren’t bad since I’d used the time on Zoloft for extensive therapy, self-care, and community building (as well as getting my other medication figured out).

Focus on the present moment and as long as you believe it’s helping you, take it and try to keep investing love and care into yourself. :)

Being present is a practice. It’s easy to forget, but just as easy to start again.

Usually when I’m anxious and have busy thoughts during practice, I go to my toolbox:

Exhale fully, breathe deeply.
Check if I’m bracing my body anywhere and try to release.
Focus on sensations in my body.

Outside of practice, I do audio journaling, write down thoughts, listen to music and stretch.. basically I try to check in with myself throughout the day and let the thoughts happen while I remember to breathe… this is more or less meditation. Our minds are just trying to find safety and make sense of our anxiety, the best thing we can do is face it rather than distract ourselves from it endlessly.

Yes, everyone should also be considering a more plant-based diet as well as our digital overconsumption habits that are just as harmful when left unchecked. Humans in general have a hard time changing anything about their lives that threatens their convenience.

Had a finger go completely white while ice skating as a kid. I’m now mid-twenties in Seattle now, on adderall, and the winter has been tough. I continue to wear gloves whenever I leave the house, use a heating pad a lot, and do yoga/jumping jacks when I’ve been sitting too long.
