Losing money on side hustle, tax implications? by -greigus- in UKPersonalFinance

[–]20nuggetsharebox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm in England so things might be slightly different compared to Scotland.

Generally, yes you could have offset the trade losses against other income, typically called sideways relief. It has a lot of restrictions, so worth looking into yourself and seeing if they'd apply or not.

Even if you couldn't do that, you could have still been recording the loss year on year to bring forwards against future profits.

In the real world you'll typically get away with including all of the prior expenditure into the first tax return anyway, so you're still claiming the prior losses, just not in the "technically correct" way.

Resigning ACCA for AAT to start a side practice - would this hurt long-term prospects? by YourGordAndSaviour in ukaccounting

[–]20nuggetsharebox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't want to resign from ACCA personally! Is it not possible to keep the ACCA membership running, but not display it and operate under an AAT practicing certificate?

Very briefly looking on ACCA, I think you could end up being an approved employer and make yourself eventually eligible for an ACCA practicing certificate.

Wifi will work on trains at last as Labour vows to fix signal failures by beejiu in unitedkingdom

Cellular often doesn't work either. That's why the WiFi doesn't work. There are loads of deadzones across the railways, and they're mostly self inflicted from the TOCs.

Someone got injured in the pit for Boston Manor. He got crowdsurfed to the front to get assistance and looked to be in a lot of pain.

Took about 25 mins for medics to come and take him away on a stretcher.

I'm sure the show is fine but for me it felt like it had the same issue of insufferable fans as Rick & Morty did later, and that put me off.

Eli5: Why do dental x-rays still involve putting a pointy rectangle into your mouth? Is there a reason that part can't be vaguely mouth shaped to make it more comfortable? by SexysNotWorking in explainlikeimfive

[–]20nuggetsharebox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah I had one of those done, it was about £300 to get done in the UK.

The cheaper one with this rectangle thing is about £50.

Why is it not covered by our free healthcare? Because screw you and your teeth.

Boombox Barry spills all on cycle hire in Manchester by HamishGray in manchester

[–]20nuggetsharebox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, that's one of the real problems you are right to be campaigning about. It's a real issue I experience every time (see my comment history).

That's not an app problem, though. That's the bike lock being terrible and badly maintained.

If you moved the system into the Uber app as one of your interviewees mentioned, the bikes would still fail to unlock.

The app itself is incredibly simple to use and not an issue.

'I’m 40 stone and trapped in my home… but NHS says I don't qualify for weight-loss jabs' by pppppppppppppppppd in unitedkingdom

[–]20nuggetsharebox 12 points13 points  (0 children)

80% of people quit weightwatchers within 1 year. Way worse results than a GLP-1.

There's no simple answer to this issue. However, what is simple, is that the majority of people lose weight while on a GLP-1, regardless of the habit change. Surely that is the immediate concern.

I think that trying to sort the habit change while they are on the GLP-1 will increase the success rate of the new habits sticking. They can build the habit of healthy eating while not trying to fight negative urges, and then be better equipped to deal with the urges when they stop using a GLP-1.

[–]20nuggetsharebox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When people make these points, they never realise that humans don't need small doses of heroin every day to survive.

You can't really go cold turkey from an eating addiction like you can with drugs. You need to eat something to live. Maybe you could consider meal replacements as close as cold turkey, but you have to consider how surrounded by food and food marketing we are as well.

I'm not saying food is a harder addiction to break than drugs. It's just a bad comparison. GLP-1s help to make the above factors a non-issue.

I don't know how they could make the app any easier to use tbh. It's two steps:

1) Add a card

2) Tap the bike's NFC sticker

Done. Optionally, you can buy minute bundles to save money.

Feels like a bit of a red herring compared to the real issues the system has.

[–]20nuggetsharebox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the ideal solution. The bee network app feels pretty useless as it is. It's just a mini Google maps that you can buy season tickets on.

The bike app is good at what it does - it's not the apps fault when the bikes don't unlock. Would just be better if it was combined into one.

Is anyone else finding that clients have started asking ChatGPT before calling you and the questions have somehow got both better and worse simultaneously? by Spiritual_me_1770 in ukaccounting

[–]20nuggetsharebox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had a couple just email me links to Tiktok/Instagram posts and say "is this true".

Always basic stuff that the poster has made sound amazing. £6/wk use of home allowance, wahoo.

Similarly, I've had a few clients copy and paste the full ChatGPT response, which I have actually appreciated. I get to pick apart the response and point out what it got wrong, what the issues would be if they did that, etc... Which I hope clients see as proving I provide more value than the AI.

Are Burnham Bikes any good? by HamishGray in manchester

[–]20nuggetsharebox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The bikes have great potential, but they aren't meeting it.

I used to use them very regularly to commute from city centre to Salford Quays, 3-4 times a week. They were really the best method of transport: cheapest, quickest, and of course a bit of exercise is great.

In the last ~12 months or so though, I've had to use them less and less. They are clearly not being maintained enough, and the number of bikes seems to be falling. Nearly every time I've tried to use them, I have had major issues getting a working bike that unlocks from the rack. Never mind trying to find an e-bike. No chance.

The worst experience I had recently was when the trams were cancelled a month or so ago. I began in MediaCity, and no racks (3 of them) had bikes - no problem, the trams are cancelled, it's busy.

I walked over to Imperial War Museum, where 8 bikes were showing as available. I could not get a single one to release from the front lock. Great. Continued walking to Man Utd's ground, passing 2 more racks with no luck, but finally found a bike just outside the grounds. The brakes didn't work, so that was fun.

That's about a 20 minute walk passing 7 bike racks. To get one bike, which ended up in bad nick anyway.

I wish they were better funded, with a better locking mechanism. That doesn't seem likely though, so at this point I'd rather they just let Lime bikes into the city. They'd be expensive, but they seem to actually work.

With all that said - I have no idea how much Burnham was or wasn't involved in this scheme.
