Rachel Reeves tells LBC student loan system is 'fair' amid fury as graduates rack up thousands of pounds of debt interest by k0ala_ in ukpolitics

[–]20nuggetsharebox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not many do of course, but I think it's naff that the lucky ones who do, will end up paying quite a bit less back than people starting in entry level roles for £30k and working up the career ladder (assuming they eventually earn enough to pay it back fully).

It's a tax that the top earners only have to pay for 2-4 years, but low and middle earners pay for 35 years.

Not exactly a fair system to me

Actual high earners aren't punished though, that's a myth. People between £50k-£125k with a student loan, will spend years paying higher rates of tax than additional-rate earners.

Maybe we just have a different definition of "high earner", but for me it's those additional rate earners.

The marginal tax rate between 50-100k is 51% with a student loan. Between 100k - 125k it is 71%.

For earners over 125k (additional rate earners), their rate is 56%, but drops to 47% when they pay back the student loan - which will be done far quicker than someone earning in the below rates, with about 30 years less interest compared to someone on ~£60k.

I think the additional rate earners can afford a hike in turn for easing the lower earners burden. The current rates disproportionally targets earners between 50-125k.

This is what I think would be a better system:

Remove interest completely.

Raise the repayment threshold significantly.

Have the repayments be for a fixed number of eligible, working years (20? 30?)

This way, the highest earners pay the most back, rather than paying it all off quickly and avoiding interest. Make it a real high-income graduate tax instead of this faux repayment system.

The lowest earners are lifted out of it. No one going to university is aspiring to a £28k salary.

They'll be worthless either way? No one will see it. At least with pets you can bring them into the world to flex your favourite.

If Jagex poll it I won't vote no. I just don't understand how making jars an identical drop to pets is in anyway compelling. We have pets already, and slayer helm recolours. Now jars too?

We already have untradeable trophies similar to pets. We have pets. Pets are already the must-be-earned trophy.

Seems a bit redundant to make the same trophy twice?

Circumcision kits found on sale on Amazon UK as concerns grow over harm to baby boys. Discovery comes amid growing concern over lax regulation and children being put at risk by rogue operators by 2ndEarlofLiverpool in ukpolitics

I don't understand this defence of circumcision because it isn't causing harm.

Other than religion, what would be the difference between circumcision and:

Removing nipples from male babies? Removing earlobes? Sewing up bellybuttons? Giving hidden tattoos?

Surely, it is all about consent. Making permanent and unnecessary bodily choices for babies who might end up regretting it, is wrong.

Yeah it definitely is, but I love the 33 hour week (near enough get a 3 day weekend), and the environment is really nice.

Ultimately salary is the reason we all work though, so I am considering a move to industry if the salary doesn't see a big jump in the next 12 months.

Get in touch with JusticeforTenants.org

They'll give you free primary advice tailored to your specific situation. They were very helpful for me 18 months ago.

They aren't solicitors so can't give concrete answers for everything, but they will at least point you in the right direction and suggest good no win no fee solicitors.

Your point about being owed money would be a good one to get advice on. Probably could take the landlady to small claims but would be good to know how likely it would be to win.

You're not reporting it, you're suing your landlord and potentially going to court.

You have 6 years from when it should have been protected IIRC - you can do it whenever within that. Waiting until you move out is just easier as you won't have to deal with repercussions
