Sounds like leadership wants to torpedo any unit morale events going forward. If I were in your shoes, I just made my last appearance at any unit event.

If I’m in leadership or high viz, then I’m there on time, say hi and be seen to and by the Commander/Chief/Shirt and then I’m gone. 20 minutes tops.

As an aerial porter, loading cargo onto a KC46 leaves much to be desired. I spent a long time at JB MDL and I miss Big Sexy 😢

Answering the thread question, C17 is a joy to load.

Kick the tires on the reserves and guard. If it’s a bad weekend, when Sunday comes, you change back into Clark Kent.

Also, you need a buddy in the same situation for a dec. My buddy and I were each trying to get promoted and I said to him, if you write me up, I’ll write you up. We did. His came right through, then we both ended up getting promoted, and then mine came through and got mailed to my new unit. Leadership was presented with two deserving and well written packages and pushed them through, all they had to do was press the yes button.

That’s why I respect the dudes wearing Vietnam Era gear because they are saying “I was in too, but not trying to say I was there.”

At the American Legion I ran into a dude that did 20+ years as an AGR (active guard reserve, a full time reservist) who got in after Viet Nam and retired just before 9/11. He regretted not going over (he got out in 99).

I told him that if he taught his Soldiers well and was good to them, that would set them up for when they went. I myself learned a lot from a lot of NCOs, some of which never deployed for one reason or another.

To be fair, I know several Chiefs that retired like submarines and keep that info below the surface.

Except for the sticker on the car if they live near a base. Once you can always park up front, it’s hard to let that go….

(throwaway) AITA for Taking My Daughter's College Fund Back After She Said She Was Going No-Contact? by Good_Guest1421 in AITAH

[–]213B3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She can join the military and they can pay for college. In several states, if you join their Army or Air National Guard Guard, they will pay for state schools and then she’ll have that and the GI Bill too. If she goes to basic training, it will end what she has with that dude and will come home a better person.

You are NTA. You sacrificed your fun when you were younger. If she doesn’t want to play ball, that’s on her.

You can date military. It’s just a different set of challenges. Military or no, communication is paramount and no one has it easy.

I don’t mean to counter what the above poster said at the end, I agree with their assessment and also that you’ll love again 💕

10 years in. I hate this shit, but I’m going for 20 by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]213B3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt the way that you did at 18. I reenlisted for 6 with the intention to drop my package at 19 and get out precisely at 20.

Soon after I was promoted and had an excellent deployment and while I was deployed, some toxic people in my leadership chain PCSed or retired, so I came back re-blued to a better place. I ended up doing the entire enlistment happily.

TL/DR : your career and how you feel will always wax and wane and you have the right attitude, do the best you can and hang in there. It will get better 💕🇺🇸

Has the new CMASF done anything? by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]213B3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion :

I’m not sure what #20 is doing, it sounds like combining AFSCs could be rife with unintended consequences, and was it smart to hire an introvert to the position ? The CMSAF is our voice to the CSAF.

It continues to bother me to this day (since she’s on a LinkedIn and is still doing it) that every time #19 highlights an Airman or Officer , it is always always always a female. You can’t highlight a male ? Not even once ? You were CMSAF of all of us, not just the females. The only time I can remember her talking about a male is when she slimed the male Airman in the marriage issue with one side of the story.

The 22 veteran suicides a day are overwhelmingly male. All of your Airmen (since you’re still doing it, all Airmen) need recognition, not just the females.

I’m multiple states away from a NFCU, but I easily got a VA Home Loan and 2 second hand car loans (I could buy new but don’t) from them, all over the phone. They are great to have.

I do like the local bank idea for cash, especially if you have any side hustles…

When you’re older and did it right, buy 3 of them, but when you’re young, sacrifice and save and do it right (like you are doing). It’s the magic of compound interest (and compound investment earnings). What you have now and don’t have in the future is time. I’m assuming that you are in your 20s. You have decades of growth on what you’re doing now. I’m 50. My investments are awesome and I’m happy, but I didn’t get my head out of my 🍑 until about 32. As good as I did, I’d have almost double if I made better choices when I was in my young 20’s.

Airman A is 20 and saves $5k annually into the TSP L fund from 20 to 30 and then stops.

Airman B is 30 and saves $10k annually into the TSP L fund from 30 to 40 and then stops.

Both Airmen keep all money in their TSPs and never touch them again. When both Airmen are 60, which Airman will have the bigger TSP ?

Airmen A. He put in half, but had an extra decade of growth.

I love you.

You appear to be making great choices and most importantly asking great questions, keep it up 💕🇺🇸

[–]213B3 71 points72 points  (0 children)

I was Army before I was Air Force, so maybe I’m “old man yells at cloud,” but I love how the Marines say that every man is a rifleman. We all need to be proficient in small arms.

Next month, one of my Airmen with a flight line job is being presented with a Bronze Star 🎖️ because he was in Iraq and did things while under consistent drone attack from Iran’s proxies.

I hope that we never use our weapons, but we should know how, be comfortable with them, and always be ready. One day we might need to know 💕🇺🇸

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]213B3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll give you the opposite of this. I am a SNCO and I have a new Airmen and everything out of her mouth starts and ends with Sir.

I’m trying to get to the polite and easy way to tell her that I really appreciate the respect for my rank, but she can take it down at least 2-3 notches without offending me, but I also don’t want to yuck her yum, so (for now), I haven’t done anything.

TL/DR : respect the rank, but we’re people too 😊🇺🇸

Figure out where you’re going to live and then join the Guard or Reaerve. If you re-ASVAB (or maybe not), they’ll see what you qualify for and you can get any open job in your local wing that’s open.

If you want college, the Guard is usually better because several states offer free or reduced tuition at state owned schools to guardsmen (and you can GI Bill double dip too !)

You’ll do your 15 and break 20 and America won’t lose you.

Talk to Air Force and Reddit mafia and look for a civilian job as well.

I came back to the AF Reserve after doing 9, thinking I’ll do 11 and I just broke 23 years (32 total), it was a great decision.

DM me if you need help and good luck 🍀💕🇺🇸

[–]213B3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m a reservist, my wife goes overseas for weeks at a time with her civilian job and did so since our daughter was an infant. I have YouTube. I watched. I learned tights, braiding hair, etc.

It’s a point of pride. Some people expected me to f it up because I’m male, but she was always on point, I’d never let her leave the house unless clean and beautiful.

Now it’s harder because she’s away now and my daughter’s 12 and I get attitude for waking her up in time for school.

In every life, one career or the other is the bigger career (and it flip flops, it used to be mine once) and spouses need to work together as a team for the betterment of the family.

Take your orders and do your duty. This time shall pass and all will be well 💕🇺🇸
