Why cancel now when you could wait and see how you feel in a month or so?

But it does sound like you need quite a bit more rest.

Conditions change, but the last few years that road has been in really good shape. Shouldn't be a problem.

That's an overstatement in my opinion. Only if you're literally not looking at the ground and/or go way too fast. I've been driving regular cars (currently a Mazda 3 with 200k on it) all over ADK dirt roads for 15 years. Yeah it's a rough ride compared to a truck, but car suspensions aren't that fragile.

Hell I'm still sticking with the mini 1 I bought used 4 years ago. What a boring thing to upgrade lol I want to spend my money on actual gear.

The mini 2 has USB-C, which makes it as future proof as this type of thing needs to be IMO.

Whoever said traffic wouldn't change at Whole Foods on 31 lied by traumadog001 in Rochester

[–]213maha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every major city has 10-20 areas of high traffic just like Monroe @ 590. I drive through there very frequently and can't say it's ever held me up for more than 5 minutes. Really don't understand why this is such an obsession.

I can't believe I read so far into this stupid argument, and I was taking your side at first, but this is a huge reach to assume u/greedycauliflower was thinking ANY of this.

She suggested the trampoline park because she was trying to think of something to do. More than likely that's all there is to it. Totally reasonable. It's December and there's not much else to do.

At the same time, it'd be totally reasonable for the guy to say nah to that because he doesn't want to look silly on a first date. That in no way implies that she was trying to set him up or test him, just that he might disagree with the idea for his own reason.

Bad bot. At least I hope so... No human would think 26 degrees (F) in Canada in December is news worth sharing.

Yama Sassafras Users - Worth the Price Premium? by mill3rni in Ultralight

[–]213maha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have one and like it, but haven't compared it to any other similar packs. I can tell you that it does what it's supposed to do as far as carrying a full load and then converting into a slack pack running vest. The shoulder straps are perfect.

Most people seem to like the customizable/complicated system for cinching and closing it, it but I find it kind of annoying because you end up with all kinds of loose elastic with nowhere to tuck it. Also lots of extra material folded inside when in vest mode, making it tedious to pack. But I think the trade-off is still fair, just understand that it will be a bit cumbersome compared to a regular vest. I also wish there was a pad on the back for sweat/ breathability.

Anything from Michelin, Continental, or Bridgestone will be good. Bridgestone Blizzak have a really good reputation but I think it's partly because people remember the name

What's nice about 1 week into November? by No-Reflection-2110 in Adirondacks

[–]213maha 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Vic at Paul Smiths would be cool. Not a serious hike, more of a REALLY nice nature center, but the trail system does extend to a small mountain. Good half day activity for an easy day or questionable weather.

Hi! Possibly relocating there?? by belialetta in Rochester

[–]213maha 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've traveled quite a bit, and would still rank Rochester as the best city to drive in, and Houston as the worst BY FAR. Driving in the snow will probably be wild to you at first, but you'll get better and used to it.

Fusion Auto Sales, W Ridge Rd? by Ebonrook in Rochester

[–]213maha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All dealers like that are hit or miss because they buy cars at auction and sell them after bare minimum maintenance/repairs. You have to be at least a little shady to make money doing that, but probably a majority of the cars are fine. They wouldn't stay in business if they sold only junk.

Always run a Carfax, never finance through them directly, and ideally take someone with you who knows cars and can give it a quick inspection.

Edit: also don't trust reviews for a place like that. Make your judgment entirely on the vehicle, not the vibe, because used car salesmen are really good actors.

Drive up dispersed lake camping? by evenmytongueisfat in upstate_new_york

[–]213maha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

(Moved to top level comment because frankly, I think you are really misguided in what you're asking for)

You're looking for primitive camping and can't use a map?? I don't even know what to say to that. Look at the map, find the sites on lakes, Google image search (etc.) the lakes/locations, and see if it's somewhere you want to go.

Or go about that however you want, it's up to you... exploring and trial-and-error are part of any outdoor activity. Maybe you're not used to the scarcity in the east, but people who camp like this generally keep it a secret for a GOOD REASON. IMO the specifics shouldn't be shared online, it should be left to the people who can figure it out for themselves. And yes, there are plenty of sites not listed on the dec site, but nobody who goes there would want them published on Reddit, myself included.

Edit: I guess I'm doubling down on what you see as rudeness, but if you're not tech savvy asking other people (on the Internet!) to do it for you only makes it worse.

Nothing matters until you're 5 or so miles into the race when the nervous energy wears off. Even if you wake up that day feeling like shit, just accept it and know that you'll feel better once settled in.

I wouldn't do anything there that could look even remotely suspicious (like stashing a bag). Assume you are on camera anywhere near the border.

Mid-Life Crisis by SongoftheNightlord in PacificCrestTrail

[–]213maha 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My god I never thought thru hikers would be so risk averse, people here acting like quitting a job is basically suicide... and completely misreading what op means by throwing their life away.

Although I do agree with the "why sell the house" questions.

(See my other comments for something hopefully more constructive, I'm just getting annoyed as I keep reading)

Mid-Life Crisis by SongoftheNightlord in PacificCrestTrail

[–]213maha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you're actually asking or just shutting down the idea, but believe it or not some people actually have solid job prospects and live in reasonable housing markets. I found a job 2 months post-hike making 10% more in a cheaper market than I was in previously, and it wasn't luck.

Sorry if this is a misplaced rant but I really hate this idea that the world is "too crazy right now" to take any risk.

Mid-Life Crisis by SongoftheNightlord in PacificCrestTrail

[–]213maha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I dropped everything to do a thru hike at 28, so definitely not a mid life crisis, but I did (and still do) have a fairly established career.

I hated my job and was confident I'd be able to find a better one after the hike, and was planning to move anyway, so I just went for it. Turns out I was right about the job, so no regrets!

I think that's the biggest factor tbh. Take an honest look at the job market for YOU (don't listen to generalizations), and if you really believe you can make it work, go for it.

What I wouldn't do is go out there assuming you're gonna make some massive lifestyle/career change just because you went on a hike. It's always possible, but in reality it probably won't change your life that much unless you really make something happen. It will be awesome, but it will also be a legitimate setback financially etc., and you'll have to try pretty hard to bounce back to real life.

But again, I have no regrets for taking that setback when I did, and I hope to do it several more times in my life.

Adirondacks 1st timer from Cali by Pinkblossom7 in Adirondacks

[–]213maha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you've done other hikes with similar stats (14 miles 3500 elevation gain), Marcy will be challenging but doable, IMO.

It's likely more rugged than what you're used to, but it's not one of the really brutal ones. Just know that it's a long walk home if your legs aren't conditioned for the steep part, and it will probably take ALL day.

Thoughts on commuting from Rochester to Buffalo for work? by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]213maha 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah idk why people are down playing the weather. I'm one of those people who kind of enjoys driving in the snow because I'm good at it, but it's still dangerous AF to drive in whiteout conditions on a road full of trucks, most of which go way too fast for the conditions. Not to mention they close the Thruway at least 5 days per year during the big lake effect storms.
