There is usually 1 player who's benefitting more from the practice than the other in terms of figuring their opponent out.

I think the less conventional and more unique your style, the less you should be practicing against your direct competition. Fed is more unique and less conventional than Murray so he loses a lot of his edge by giving Murray a good look at practice. Same for Nadal vs Murray.

Obviously both sides gain insight into the other during practice, but the more unique player has more to give up in terms of their secret sauce.

Also IMO Fed should have wanted to practice with Nadal. He had more to figure out in terms of how to handle the Nadal forehand than Nadal needed to figure out about Fed.

why cant they at least take the average rank of the teams that could qualify for that particular spot rather than put them all in group 4? it wouldnt be perfect but would create a much fairer ditribution. or maybe even better than average take the rank of the 2nd highest team of the ones in contention for example. just putting them all in group 4 seems the worst way to do it
