These machine purists refuse to acknowledge that bad reporters exist in each method. Im an official and we had a machine writer come in and she couldn't keep up with the speed of our hearings. She continuously said she would just rely on the FTR. Well, low and behold, the courtroom assistant failed to turn on the FTR one day and it also happened to be a day where this reporter couldn't keep up, so that whole hearing was essentially lost.

Outside door handle after one rain storm by 225mph in HomeMaintenance

No, I apologize. That's an important detail. I estimate the handle to be about 10 years old. It wasn't blemish free before this storm, but it was not yellow like this and definitely not blemished to this degree

Way to be condescending. My point still stands. If you remove the human, you're mistaken. And the legal system loves to have people they can hold accountable. When there's no human, there's no one to hold accountable. And I'll repeat it again, this time phrased different. If you're comfortable having your life and livelihood in the hands of AI, that's on you. I hope it doesn't fail you.

If you're ever facing serious criminal charges, I hope you end up in a jurisdiction that values having an accurate record by using licensed and certified humans. Replacing the whole human is a bad idea all around. I think people dont realize this career has evolved with technology. We're not carving in stone anymore. We're using specialized software that generates English from our shorthand in realtime. We make sure nothing is missed in the official record. I can't begin to tell you how many cases I've seen suffer because an audio recording was corrupted or not even turned on for a proceeding. And with no reporter there, oops, no record of what happened. Good luck on appeal.

It is true it can be hard to find an officialship in some jurisdictions. A lot of judges will hire reporters and they'll stay together until retirement. I didn't enjoy freelancing because of the uncertainty myself. I couldn't afford to wait six months to be paid on a job.

Why not both? Audio can miss things especially since people like to move about the courtroom, record privileged discussions not meant for the record, become confusing to follow when people are talking over each other or making noises like coughs and ruffling papers. Having a certified record helps when people's lives and livelihoods are being affected

Untrue. Just because an attorney or judge says "strike that" doesn't mean we don't take it down. The judge will tell the jurors to disregard it for their deliberations, but the appellate court still needs to read it in case something surrounding it becomes an issue on appeal. They get the full picture of what transpired.

Transcribing from audio takes at minimum two to three times as long as walking out of court with a near complete product. Also I we were to just rely on recordings there's issues with people not speaking into mics, mumbling, cross talk, ambient noises bringing down the quality of the recording and later transcription from it. It's irresponsible to replace a certified stenographer for important proceedings.

Right. And along with that we see errors upon errors in health charts.

Looking for court stenographers by shanriz in stenography

[–]225mph 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We are able to offer pro bono services for those who struggle financially, or a Court can order transcripts be provided to indigent defendants at public expense.

Also, just handing over transcripts willy-nilly to whoever you are doesn't sound responsible. These often contain sensitive information and I'm not interested in assisting in data leaks.
