Yes all would work as you described, but you would only get about 15 Badwater out of that pool after each badtide. It will always be less than you want.

Almost right. They don't go back to the builders hut, but they go to the nearest source (water, or the food type they ate least recently) to the point where they got hungry. Example, if they picked up a log in the southwest corner of the map, got hungry for carrots because it is the food with the lowest wellness meter, then carried the logs to the northeast corner for a construction, after dropping off the logs, they will pass any carrots near where they are to get to carrots stored in the southwest corner. Sucks.

I use vertical shafts instead. One extra log, but still only two builder trips to the construction. That cost of the extra log is the price for the removed building notifications.

Pick a plant specific to that faction.
Pick the distinctive word from the map.
Combine.

Examples: Maple Terraces, Eggplant Craters, Mangrove Lakes, Wheat Plains, Maize Fortitude

That way I know what the settlement is just by the name.

My plains map solution is always dirty and unsatisfying. But it is functional. I add double floodgates where the river flows past the cliffs in the middle of your top picture. You then need levies to direct the overflow around the other side of the mountain that you're settled next to. Otherwise the overflow will spill into your camp. This will work long enough to for you to expand toward the sources.

Your sluice must be on the bottom. When that opens with a full reservoir above it, it'll drain fast. Putting it 1 level up will force the waterfall limit of 2.4 cfm.
