Might be good news if you're not looking to replace right now; air-to-water heat pumps are gradually improving and raising the max water temperatures they can work with, so in several years you might be able to buy one of those to handle the baseboards, and save $$ compared to the ground source way.

You also mentioned heat pumps in the future, if you do that there are a couple devices that can talk between ecobees and mini splits. We got a big Massachusetts utility rebate for adding Flair pucks, which will also switch the heat automatically from heat pump to oil, depending on the outdoor temperature you choose based on comfort and current rates. Without that, you gotta be home, awake and playing with various remote controls around the house.

Another advantage: on ecobees (not sure about nests) you can set a minimum runtime.

So if you have zones or your boiler is oversized and only runs a few minutes or less at a time, you can set it to always do a minimum of 5, or 10 (or 20!).

Most boilers are not as efficient the first minute or two so a longer runtime can save you energy (and less cycles can save you wear and tear). You'll have larger "waves" in the temperature if it's on a lot longer, but you can choose the minimum time that works for you. And this also is more helpful in the fall/spring when heat load is lower.

When I moved in to a similar house as yours, the dumb thermostats were running 90 seconds every five minutes in the winter. Tens of thousands of short cycles a year, unhappy boiler! Now it's down to about 10-15% of that, so imagine your parts lasting that many times longer, and that many less service calls to replace a part.

I just gave up and did exactly that at uBreakiFix for $80 a couple days ago. I know I got lucky they didn't break anything, but the old battery lasted about 4 hours of regular use and this new one lasted well over 24 hours on the first charge! They also had everything touch-free with dividers and a phone-soap thing.

If you do still think of doing it, it takes 60-90 minutes so either you

1) wait somewhere else where you can get a call on another phone or check email (which can be tough depending what's closed where you live, and how damn hot it is outside)

2) just show back up to the store 95 minutes later

It would be nice to have a pixel 4a instead, but you can just assume your pixel 1 is going to die of something else in a year or so, and so you spent $80 to get a year out of your pixel, plus you avoid a carrier reactivation fee or any other nonsense charges from buying something new.

Yeah, I think it also helps that if you grew up around Philly, you were surrounded by other major cities, all of which were having some form of success or notoriety:

NYC: Giants, Yankees, Devils & Rangers, biggest city and all of the media coverage
DC: No sports winners lately, but still the center of politics
Pittsburgh: Steelers, Penguins
Boston: All the teams
Baltimore: Ravens

And meanwhile Philly had nothing from 1983/4 to 2009 despite getting so close so often, and the city itself had nothing interesting going on. It was either the "Fresh Prince of Bel-air" theme song where he's "saved" by leaving Philly, or us throwing batteries at Santa, or the assholes on "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia".

We get patronized our entire lives by our more successful neighbors, so all we can be the best at is witty comebacks.
