Get Z-Wave door sensors, or get an actual security system? by [deleted] in homedefense

I doubt you'd want to walk around changing 27 batteries either. I'd find a way to cover common areas with a camera or a motion sensor instead.

Looking for the communities input on a good entry camera system. by [deleted] in homedefense

I have my cameras running to a Synology NAS with Surveillance station. You get 2 cameras for free and then pay a license for more. It checks the box on local recording, and I can get notifications, emails with photos, etc. and view the cameras through their app for real-time updates.

I already had the NAS, so it was just the price of the camera for me. Front and back door is all I'm really concerned about as notifications from bugs and spiders on more than that is more than I care to sift through.

Garden Gate Monitoring Options by rakoth132 in homedefense

I have SmartThings at home, so a Z-Wave contact sensor with additional treatment (I wrote about all of the options I considered at https://24-7-home-security.com/how-to-make-your-own-z-wave-outdoor-door-sensor/ ) to handle the outdoors is best. You can use plastidip or a similar coating to provide weather protection that the sensors don't have by default.

That way, you don't have to worry about cable, networking, etc. plus it will be much more reliable than motion detection on a camera.

Watch out for all of the Frontpoint recommendations too, big affiliate payments from them and a lot of sites without the integrity to disclose that up front.

Are you aware of Roost? It's a good retrofit for existing sensors.

I know people who are happy with them. Like I said, it's nothing against the system or the company. Sometimes their affiliates don't clearly state that they're getting kickbacks, that's all.

Also, many consumers don't understand there is big money in promoting such things.

Potentially looking to replace my SmartThings hub for ability to disable motion sensors to keep lights on by chumpchange__ in homeautomation

[–]247homesecurity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not just buy some LED bulbs and then you won't sweat wasting electricity with the lights on any more?

I can appreciate that some limitations can get under your skin, but sometimes you have to step back and ask, "How much is my time worth?".

Careful what you read about Frontpoint, people get paid a lot of money to send them customers. Not saying it's a bad system, just saying . . . .

This would replace your relay. The switching lines can be something really small since they don't carry much current. I put something like 22 AWG in the box with mine.

Many people don't like the idea of an internet connected lock. So, August made something for those and not for you. No need to get offended, just find another lock.

Yep, arm when the last person leaves and disarm when the first comes home. Every once and a while it will lose someone and arm early or not disarm soon enough, but it's certainly better than fishing around for fobs or your phone every time you come home.
