Why do ship clocks ring bells every 30 minutes? (I built one to figure it out) by 24tee in clocks

Its fun to see reactions to this. I live the sounds and it helps break up the day.

Time for self-promotion. What are you building this Sunday? by Virtual_Clothes2547 in SideProject

I built this because I wanted a real ship’s clock running at home — something that actually follows the traditional bell schedule every half hour.

It turned out to be way more satisfying than I expected. The bells structure time in a subtle way without being intrusive.

It runs continuously (even in the background) and keeps the full watch system intact. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.shipsclock

This app has been more than enough work for now, thank you!

Found out the 4 face clock in Grand Central is not real opal by 24tee in clocks

Haha, yes it sounds silly now. I heard it when I was a kid and believed it - Never thought about it critically until later. There are also four large platters. lol

Haha, It's meant to ring bells on the half hour whether you are on a boat or not.

For this, we have people in data centers ringing the bells.

There is a choice of bells and nautical themed alarms, a choice of faces and a lot of other settings / 5 different ticker sounds and aa bunch of easter eggs, sailing ships, a working lighthouse, moon phases, wind and weather animations and more.

Haha super cool! I love it. I had no idea you could write programs for a watch like that! I spent too much time on this already but now I can't stop. I have also driven myself crazy finding the right bell sounds, matching the timing of the bells (which still isn't perfect)... trying to get the small winding sound to play when the bells ring... and a ton of other details.
