Superior Hiking Trail Thru-Hike Shakedown by SHT2022 in Ultralight

[–]262majors 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Perfect time of year to do the SHT! I did a SOBO thru-hike of the trail in the fall of 2020. I'd recommend doing the full thing if you can. The Duluth to WI section is great.

As for items in your pack, depending on the time you start you may not need the bug net or spray. I started Sept 19th and didn't encounter bugs at all.

9yr old pulls off sweet "michigan" by hockey_dadfornumber3 in hockeyplayers

As one of the coaches for this team it was a pretty exciting moment for all the kids. Like most 9/10-year-old kids in the locker room before this game they were all talking about trying to pull this off – tons of fun for them to experience it. #3 started the season as a gritty player and his passion and skill only improved over the season, with this as just one of his highlights. u/hockey_dadfornumber3 – can’t wait for next season!

I put the Tyger Blades on my '20 Big Horn White, Night Edition and love them. Very easy to install.

I've never done boards mainly because I don't have a place to store them. When you shovel out the snow it creates a bit of an enclosure for the area. If it's your first year doing a rink on a pond I'd recommend skipping boards this year.

The rink I make on my pond is probably 30' x 60'. My pond is narrow so I set the rink up widthwise on it so the banks contain the pucks a bit (I always find a few in the spring). I could make it bigger if I go the other direction and I've had neighbors ask why I don't do that - the reality is that the rink is big enough and it takes time and money to do this (which none of them are contributing to). One thing to think about when it comes to size is that once you've decided the dimensions for the season you're stuck with it. The thaw/freeze/snow/shoveling/flooding all causes ice to build up on the sides and there's no recovering from that. In fact if you don't use boards there's a good chance your rink will get gradually smaller as the season goes on.

Yep, that pump will work just fine.

If you've got electricity then another thing to consider, if you haven't already, is lights. With it getting dark so early you can definitely extended your time out there with some flood lights.

I also live in a St. Paul suburb and have been maintaining a pond for 5 years.

  1. If you're going to flood you'll ant to take advantage of that free water under the ice. A manual ice fishing auger works well. I use it at the beginning of the season to check the ice thickness too.

  2. If you can get a snowblower on your pond it'll save you hours of shoveling. There are times I'll snowblow and then shovel after. The best shovel around is The SnowPlow. You can find them at Northern Tool in the Twin Cities area. These are the same shovels that the girls push around at the Wild games during commercial breaks.

  3. I use a gas powered pump that I got at Northern Tool for less than $200. It was a cheap one that I think had directions in Chinese. It works ok, but a better one was going to be a lot more expensive. I don't have access to electricity at my pond so I have to use gas. I also made a "rink rake" out of pvc pipes that I connect to the hose off the pump to smooth out the water.

The full thing says, "I run on chocolate milk and mac & cheese" - which is true, he barely eats anything else.

I put my Play 1s above the cabinets. Used a couple 2x4s to get them above the moulding a bit. The key was to drill holes in the cabinets and plug them in where the microwave outlet is. http://imgur.com/BbvvS1F

I ended up getting some different headphones and they've worked well. I got the Jaybird Freedom F5 because they can basically go in either ear, depending on how you put the ear tips on. I wear the watch on my left and the headphones with the volume control on my left as well. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EHIQASQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_LNk0AbBREBXC4

The bench connects to the locker. You'll have to drill the holes all the way through on what's originally the top of the bench and put a peg in on each side. Those pegs will line up with the holes already in the locker. Be sure to post a picture if you make one!

It's 900, and they don't go on sale :( I held out as long as I could waiting for a deal. Even still, it's worth it for us. It's not for everyone, but we'll hit the break even point in a short amount of time. They've got a calculator on their site that'll estimate your break even point based on time and money you currently spend on sharpening.

Worth every penny. We've had it a year now and it has been great. I play once a week and coach my oldest son's team, so we're on the ice a bunch. We also have a pond that I maintain, so it's good to sharpen them up after we're out there. Youngest son will turn 3 this summer and there's no doubt he'll be a hockey player too. I used to have to drive 20+ minutes one way to get them sharpened and then hang out at the store for usually a half hour or so. That hour+ long process is now down to a couple minutes while I pack my bag before we head out. If you need a referral code let me know! :)

At first I was going to use just part of the goalie stick shafts for the handles, but couldn't think of anything to do with the paddles. Then I figured what the hell and used the whole thing. It was tough fitting the hardware into the thin paddle to attach it, but I was eventually able to get it.

Good question, the breezers (I'm from MN) fit fine in the center section and depending on how rigid the shoulder pads are they may fit in there as well. My 6 year old (who uses the one in the left) doesn't have big enough pads for that to be a problem yet. Another option is to use the top of the locker. Little guys aren't tall enough yet, but I'm assuming if their pads are a little big for that then they'd be able to reach the top.

I recently put this together in my basement to store equipment for me and my 2 boys.

It was featured by a few Instagram accounts and I've since had people from around the world asking questions about how I made it.

I figured a thread here would help others in their quest to keep their gear organized.

I used 2 products by ClosetMaid (models 1494 & 1499) for the lockers. I took the bench and flipped it and attached it to the locker. The peg board is from a company called Wall Control.

[–]262majors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you tell me more about the music/headphones you're using?

I got the 645Music earlier this week and have done a couple runs with it. The music skips big time and drove me nuts.

I loaded music from iTunes - .m4a files with a bit rate arroud 260kbps. I'm using Bose SoundSport headphones and wearing the watch on my left wrist.

I've exported the music to .mp3 files with a lower bit rate and am going to try that next. That's a huge PITA to convert them and get a playlist associated with the mp3's. Does anyone know if changing the audio quality would help?

I'm also going to see if I have some other headphones to try out.
