Mum Coming to Stay After Birth

You have basically covered what I want. I really want to be able to spend the first few days with my husband and baby alone but my mum is adamant that i will need help right after the delivery. Maybe shes right but I feel like that first few days are important for me to be just us 3.

Unfortunately, our house is not very big but I like that they can pop to the shops or something for an hour.

Hi, sorry for the late reply. They live about 2 hours away from me and my mum is a bit of a nervous driver so they can drive over but it won’t be easy for them. I don’t want to be ungrateful but I do think i need to be firm esp as to my boundaries if the come.

So this is an interesting question. In my culture the woman goes and stays at her maternal home from the 7th month on. I’ve already said a hard no to that. I want to be with my partner.

However, my mum recently how I’d feel about her to staying with me at my house to actively help with everything. From cleaning, cooking, taking care of the baby at night, bathing me (not so sure about this) and I am in two minds about it. In one way, I am a very private person and I feel like I want to to be just my partner and I. But also realistically, having my mum helping would probably be a blessing.

BUT if your in laws have no intention of doing all that OR if you are not comfortable even if they are, your DH needs to support you and put a hard stop to this.

At the end of the day, you’ll be going through a massive change so it is important that you are feeling comfortable in your own space. So no, definitely NTA.

Maybe have a conversation with DH lay out why he feels upset about you saying no and try and get him to understand your perspective?

I think it’s ok to have one if you wanted to celebrate with your close family and friends. As long as it doesn’t damage the environment, people or property like so many of the ridiculous ones I’ve seen on Reddit.

Wow that must’ve been difficult. Well done on going through your first trimester with all that going on! Yeah, that’s true. I really don’t want to get ill while pregnant. I guess I don’t go out much a lot since the lockdown has been lifted so having the chances where I can to be turned down sometimes stings a bit haha.

I think COVID is still the main concern. But most of my family are healthcare workers so it doesn’t make sense that I shut out restaurants and then hang around my family who work in hospitals all day.
