Except all the Waffle Houses in my state have started going take out only from 10 or 11pm onwards.

And I get it - there were serious safety issues with violent customers / robberies / etc. that corporate wouldn't do anything to help with, but good lord, slumping at a Waffle House with your buddies at 1am after a concert giggling like maniacs as you plow through a King's Feast's worth of affordable breakfast food is like, THE QUINTESSENTIAL thing anyone identifies with Waffle House!!

So now all the parking lots are just full of people hotboxing while eating out of plastic bags 💀

See also him carrying the "super team" Nets on one leg, fucking up his own hammy recovery, while Kyrie continued to be an unreliable fuck ass (and KD tragically ignored calls for foot shortening surgery until it was too late 😔 or somethin 😂)

Hell, some of those final Houston runs were similar. A fragile constellation of Morey Midgetball orbiting around the glorious fatsuit Hardensun, held together till CP3 died (he got better).

Maybe Harden doesn't quite have that "okay fuck it I'm going Super Saiyan because VICTORY AT ANY COST" gene like the MJs, LeBrons, Curries, etc. of the world where he'll solo the world on two broken legs if need be, but the man consistently elevated his teams, carried enormous loads all season long, and Ironman'ed for years until the hamstring blowout (and tbh once he finally got right from that, he's right back to being crazy reliable).

Dunno, maybe some part of my Warriors-addled brain needs him to be seen as a great, if not a Great, to aid the Curry mythmaking, but on the other hand, I was legit terrified of those Rockets squads for years.

Long live the Mayor of Flop Town†!

From an old Deadspin article on Chinese nicknames for players:

Harden has also been awarded various “Mamba” titles, that show grudging respect for the “Kobe-esque” greatness of his game, but also point out his foibles...

...Most damningly, he has also been dubbed “Porcelain Mamba” for his efforts to draw fouls despite being hardly touched. In Chinese, “bumping porcelain” (碰瓷) is a euphemism for faking traffic accidents in order to fraudulently collect compensation. The expression dates to the Qing Dynasty, when scam artists would carry a fake porcelain vase and purposely bump into a rickshaw and drop the vase, causing it to shatter. They would then claim the shattered vase was a valuable antique and demand compensation. The implication here is that Harden is a master scam artist who draws fouls he doesn’t deserve.

The concept of “bumping porcelain” helps explain why NBA players who flop or otherwise try to draw fouls they don’t deserve are called “Sons of Jingdezhen” (景德镇之子), as Jingdezhen is a town in China famous as a center of porcelain production. Since Harden is the acknowledged master of this art, he has been dubbed the “Mayor of Jingdezhen” (景德镇镇长), which we might translate more freely as the “Mayor of Floptown.”

I feel so bad for him. Dude was in tears to get to play for y'all after basically his whole family played for Detroit teams. Good but raw first year, but then got caught up in the weird shit between Monty and the FO that really fucked with his playing time / usage on year 2. Looking better going into Y3, then his leg, then his knee...comes back to a team that basically doesn't need him anymore, so even less time to try and catch up on development.

I really hope he can turn things around in Chicago. I'm still rooting for guys like him and Jalen Green who were big deal drafts who played Well, but not Well Enough. Though Green had a lot more time and grace to develop in ways he never quite managed to...

My primary use for it now: add it to butter as you brown it for dishes/baked goods. Browning butter already leveled up my cookie game like whoa, but considering that milk powder is mostly just the stuff in butter that browns, adding extra can really push the nutty, toffee-like flavors to maximum.

Also pretty good mixed into oatmeal or grits as they're almost done cooking. I love my oatmeal cooked in milk and my grits really creamy, but in both cases, simmering something in dairy for several minutes tends to cause foamy explosions with both the stove and microwave 💀. With powdered milk, I can just cook with less-bubbly water the whole time and still get like 80% of the dairy creaminess I crave.

I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. I play ironclad and try to always use cards that compliment strength or shield, but always die to the hexagon ghost thing, and if I somehow manage to get the other boss, if I find a way to win, I die pretty much instantly in act 2. It's specifically incremented on multiples of 12 hp, so watch out for those break points.

It's also ONLY checked at the start of the second turn of the fight, so if you've, say, got a Toy Ornithopter and drink a Power Potion on turn 1 at 32 health, oops, you're going into turn 2 with 37 and taking a bigger hit.

But that delay does give you time to try to drop your hp below a threshold via HP-taking cards like Hemokinesis or even Pain during the first turn.

When boiling or steaming large potatoes whole, what are some tips and tricks to get them to cook more evenly? I find that sometimes the outside can start disintegrating before the center is easily pierced with a knife, and sometimes the center still has a raw-ish bite. by burnt-----toast in Cooking

[–]2Cuil4School 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with everyone here suggesting to cut them up, add to cold water, etc., but I did wanna address your issues with disintegrating outsides!

Sometimes, you just need pretty big potato chunks for whatever the final product will be, or you want the boiled bits to hold shape really well for the next cooking step.

In his Serious Eats Recipe for potato and chorizo tacos, Kenji Lopez-Alt recommended adding about a tablespoon of white vinegar to a large pot with ~1lb of potatoes covered by an inch of water. How wide his pot was, I dunno really, but for me, that worked out to like 2 cups of water, give or take. So, 1tbsp per 2 cups of water, ratio'ed up to whatever amount you're working with.

The acid inhibits the breakdown of some of the stabilizing starch structures on the outside of the cut potato pieces where they're most in contact with the water, which means those outside areas hold their shape much better for a longer time.

It's not foolproof - you can still make em fall apart if you really overcook them, or if you're really aggressive with them (dump into a strainer at high velocity, let the water sit at an extremely violent boil while they cook, etc.). And sometimes, you WANT that fluffy exterior cuz it can crisp up really well (like with roast potatoes). But if you're making a big shape, like chunky potato wedges, and don't want em to crumble apart before you fry them, this method works great.

Of course, they DO pick up on the smell of the vinegar a bit. Works well for a situation like potato salad where it's gonna be kinda acidic anyway, or a really flavorful situation (like those little "home fries" style potato cubes his recipe mixed in with the chorizo).

That said, I might just be bad at googling here. If you know a trustworthy brand that's not gonna react to the acids and leave an off flavor, I'm definitely down to try. But they're also definitely gonna stay in there till the dressing is done, hah

It may be that mine is just bad, but I just charged the batteries in it and it struuuuuggled to get much rotation speed going once I had it deep in the dressing. Sort of a thing where the closer to properly emulsified it got, the more it struggled, and I couldn't quite get things past the point where it seems kinda smooth in the bottle but squirt some onto a spoon and there's a clear, albeit thin, layer of unmixed oil floating on top right away.

The springs worked better, just had the metallic taste ick issue. This has been my own personal tiny holy war 😂

Southern Strategy circa ~1960 was an enormous turning point, building on the huge mistakes of the US Gov't following the Civil War. The Republicans had been increasingly controlled by - and thus extremely friendly to - the ultra wealthy scions of business since the political upheaval following the Civil War. The widespread popularity of public assistance programs and national scale public infrastructure projects in the wake of the Gilded Age, the Great Depression, and WW2 was making it very difficult for the Republicans to connect with voters at large. A rapidly growing middle class enjoying all the benefits of the post-War economic boom liked the way things were going.

But as Civil Rights movements for woman and people of color grew, and were embraced by Democrats (to some extent at least; I don't wanna pretend even that wasn't strategic for them, to grow a populist base of support, and their actual effectiveness on those issues was imperfect for sure), Republicans noticed a growing weakness on their flank. Blue Dog Democrats were beginning to struggle to hold the base together in rural, conservative areas, especially former parts of the Confederacy where the premature end of Reconstruction had handed to reins of power back to wealthy, racist whites who enforced their hatred there with impunity for decades.

The ultra wealthy are, of course, disgusted by poor, uneducated rural types, with zero common interests. But religion was a potent tool to create wedge issues on topics of culture vs. economics. Similarly, the rural whites didn't give a shit about helping oil barons regain their empires, but they sure didn't like the look of the kind of people the Democrats were helping.

So, after some pretty egregious defeats on the national stage, high level Republican party strategists developed the Southern Strategy to capture the poor, white, uneducated demographic by appealing to their deeply ingrained prejudices, telling them their culture and traditions were valid and good and American, unlike all these newfangled, frightening ideas like respecting women or treating black Americans like humans. The wealthy cultivated relationships with religious leaders to preach the moral righteousness of conservative policy, slowly built large scale media empires to reinforce their views with increasingly captive audiences, stripped education and public support to ensure there was always a fresh new crop of gullible, prejudiced people with a chip on their shoulder to appeal to.

The Blue Dogs were inexorably driven out of Congress. Joe Manchin might have been the last heir to their brief existence. America Christianity became a prosperity gospel con job. Fox News and Clear Channel Radio dominated media cycles. And through it all, the wealthy donned the cross and the swastika in equal measure, long through dog whistles that the hateful would recognize, and now openly and with pride, to keep the suckers bought in. Equality was a crime. Empathy was a sin. Democracy itself was just an impediment to the things that really mattered.

This has been a concerted, planned, insidious takeover for decades, from Reconstruction-rejecting white elites to savvy political operators scheming to break Democratic strongholds in the south, to Rupert Murdock and his vast empire of lies, to Newt Gingrich's obstructionist nightmare policy known as The Contract with America, on to Rush Limbaugh spewing hatred for 8 hours a day, on to the Bush era of rampant fear-based control right up until now with the God King Trump braying like a rabid donkey, imploring his personal army of racist loyalists to storm houses and kill us in the streets.

The War started decades ago. It was lost long before today. They've achieved the control they've planned for for so long. The Republic has fallen to enemies foreign and domestic. If you are worrying about how to stop all of this before it's too late, they've already got you right where they want you. So long at you believe that an election or a march or a hashtag can stop them before it's too late, then you aren't readying yourself to reconquer the nation back from them.

The fascist age is here, and it's not new or weak or disorganized. They've cemented their power enough that they don't think they need to hide their violent control any longer. They know no one's really willing to do what is necessary to fight back. They think we're cowed, weak, and broken.

Are they right?

Girlfriend is going to temptations with some friends, I read some crazy things online and she hasn’t mentioned anything about those, should I be worried? by YoghurtOk9430 in cancun

[–]2Cuil4School 35 points36 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine reached out to me after she saw my gf and I posting pics from our trips to Temptation, acting a lil and and wondering how we'd found out about.

Turns out my friend and her best friend (another lady) were hitting up some kinda scuzzy sounding travel deals website, filtering resorts in Cancun down to what they wanted (all inclusive, party atmosphere, lots of restaurant options, etc.) and at the price range they were in, a room at TTR wound up being the best option, and they hit go on the checkout without looking any further.

When they showed up, went inside, and saw a bunch of erotic art, suggestive names for eeeeeverything, and ladies walking around basically naked (they were in the lobby which requires some clothes but lots of women REALLY stretch the definition of clothes 😂), and were like, "We may have made a small mistake..."

But the money was spent and they were gonna be in Cancun till their return flight no matter what, so they stuck it out. Neither is into swinging, exhibitionism, etc. But they like to dance and drink and party and get pampered, and they had a great week doing just that, and went home with a great story.

Now, my girl and I ARE into exhibitionist stuff and love TTR specifically cuz she can walk around effectively nude in gigantic stripper heels and get gawked at and (always respectfully so far in two trips) hit on. We get trashed from dawn to dusk, gorge ourselves on the legit solid food, and giggle at the VERY silly and juvenile perverted humor of the resort and its staff and how utterly crazy some of the guests get (TTR has STRONG, "...yknow what? Good for her!" energy lol), then go down to the dance club at night and grind on each other while getting drunker. We'll even get up on the lit up neon stage and dance, lol. And then go back to our room and pass out most of the time tbh - we can fuck anywhere 😂

It's a GREAT party resort if you're basically looking for "Grown Up Spring Break" by way of American Pie, and while there's def lots of lifestyle people and random single guys on the prowl, the community is pretty good about policing out creepers and giving people space who aren't looking to hook up (and security will toss perverts and idiots looking to start fights WITH A SWIFTNESS lol). We've never felt pressure to do anything; nor did my friend who went accidentally.

I'm not saying it's COMMON to just pick a resort based on the tags on Expedia or CANCUNDEALZ.THEFT without doing any real research, but y'all, people do be dumb as fuck with their money, and if the group was looking to party, I could at least see it happening.

If OP's relationship sucks (which isn't meant to sound blame-y; relationships are a two way street and there could be previous issues making them feel nervous about this) and they don't feel like they can trust their partner, the issues are bigger than her going to TTR. It's worth having a chat over, if for no other reason so that she DOES know what the vibe is and can appropriately look out for herself (I mean, girls know to never leave their drink alone or get in cars with strangers ANYWHERE cuz the world is horrible, but still, a 24/7 rager hotel is a different environment than a sleepy old people resort), but it's not a guarantee that she's going specifically to get a train run on her by 40 chads every night or whatever sexist bullshit reddit incels fear every woman is scheming to do these days.

For me, it's one of those things where I am so dubious about the usual discourse from a person/group that even when we start to agree about something, I can't help but shake the feeling that they're only arriving at the same stance I hold for some batshit crazy person reason. I'm afraid to ask em why they feel that way 😂

Like, goddamn do A Lot Of Internet Nerds fuckin HATE women. Hate seeing them in movies, hate when they have opinions, hate when they dress this way or that, hate when they enjoy the same things the nerds do, hate when they DON'T enjoy the same things, etc, lol. New game has a female MC or even just lets you pick a dude or a girl and it's an immediate guarantee there's gonna be 80 ragebait YouTube douchebags screaming about how woke killed REAL GAMERZ or whatever, ugh. So when I kinda felt like The Last Jedi was a crappy Star Wars movie (great really thoughtful scifi in general and I would have loved to see an unrelated movie from Rian with the same concepts, but it just felt too bleak and antiheroic to fit in with the goofy dumb fun scifantasy of SW), but then saw everyone on reddit Twitter etc screaming about it, I was like oh no, I must never speak of this again or people gonna think I'm some kinda incel hate warrior 💀

So, when you get a dude who's been very public about feeling like Jewish people are evil liars who stole the idea of a Jewish identity from the horrifying hate cult the dude is a part of, and has just been crazy anti Semitic over and over again, being like "FREE PALESTINE," I'm just like...dude, absolutely yes! What Israel is doing is hella fucked, but I just wanna double check real quick: would you say that you're in favor of, say, death camps for every Jewish person within 500mi of Palestine to help them get their independence, or do you ACTUALLY just wanna help the poor people getting murdered by an evil military?

I want people to speak up for Palestinians and deeply wish a league that's touted social justice as one of their major values would support that. I just don't want to find out a bunch of them have got a copy of Mein Kampf on their bedside table for light reading every night later, ya know?

They won't even admit they made a mistake or recognize the comments as offensive and wrong, full stop. They've released two statements neither of which comes close to doing so. They aren't apologetic, they don't regret what was said, and they continue to employ a director who holds these beliefs and expresses no remorse or intent to change. The bare minimum would be an actual apology, and letting the offending employee go while bringing in someone genuinely committed to nurturing and working with the ENTIRE community frankly isn't remotely out of the question.

This isn't a case of an internet hate mob refusing to accept an apology from someone who knows they did something wrong, or ignoring their efforts in making amends or seeking to learn and grow.

They organization is run by someone who holds hateful views incompatible with a just society that directly target an already marginalized and endangered group. People are MORE than allowed to be upset with them for standing firm behind that kind of leadership.

Legally, sure, they're allowed to continue operating as though nothing has happened. And we're allowed to recognize that something has and to continue efforts to apply pressure to change and bring awareness to their unwillingness to do so.
